All American Marine to Build Research Vessel for Cal Poly Humboldt
Bellingham, Wash. shipbuilder All American Marine (AAM) announced it has been awarded a contract to build a new research vessel for the marine sciences program at the California Polytechnical Institute at Humboldt (Cal Poly).The vessel is a 78’ x 26.7’ semi-displacement aluminum catamaran that was developed by Nic de Waal of Teknicraft Design in Auckland, New Zealand. The vessel will be inspected to U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) Subchapter T standards and will operate as a multipurpose research vessel in the Near Coastal Waters of Northern California and Oregon, as well as Offshore on Ocean Routes.
Tomley to Oversee Long Beach Green Port Programs
The Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners this week appointed Heather A. Tomley as the new Director of Environmental Planning. She will be charged with leading Green Port environmental initiatives. Tomley has been serving as the City of Long Beach Harbor Department’s Acting Director of Environmental Planning since July 2013. California Polytechnic Orders Second Iver2 AUV
OceanServer Technology announced that Cal Poly has agreed to purchase a second Iver2 AUV for research purposes. The first Iver2 AUV was purchased in 2008 and has been used extensively for a variety of research applications including one project that required the vehicle to operate under the ice in the Arctic. The new vehicle will also be a multi use platform in a number of research efforts including marine life tracking (such as sharks). Horizon Helps Deliver Concrete Canoes
Engineering students from 12 universities around the country will began competing in Hawaii in the conference finals of the American Society of Civil Engineers' 22nd Annual ASCE National Concrete Canoe Competition. The winner of these races will earn a spot in the national championships in North Carolina this June. Before the concrete canoes could begin their sail to the finish line, however, they had to get to the starting line. Working together, Horizon Lines, LLC, and Horizon Logistics, LLC, coordinated the door-to-door delivery of the competition canoes from inland points in the continental United States to the Port of Los Angeles for ocean voyage aboard a Horizon Lines container vessel to Honolulu and on to final destination at the University of Hawaii.
