Herbert-ABS Software Solutions Debuts Herbert-ABS Wind

Herbert-ABS Software Solutions released its Herbert-ABS Wind program, touted as a regulatory wind and overturning moment calculation tool that can be provided as a stand-alone application, or as part of the larger HECSTAB design and regulatory assessment software suite.Leveraging extended modeling capabilities from the HECSTAB Ship Project Editor, or HECSTAB Rhino plug-ins, anyone can define a 3D model representative of a vessel’s topside structures. Once a model is complete, Herbert-ABS Wind can perform calculations for wind force and overturning moments used in design and regulatory approval. Herbert-ABS Wind allows naval architects to evaluate relevant regulatory requirements for floating structures…

DNV GL’s Nauticus Hull software has been given a major upgrade to provide improved support for the new DNV GL rules and IACS requirements. The software covers DNV GL rules for classification of ships and IACS Common Structural Rules for Bulk Carriers and Oil Tankers with capabilities ranging from simplified rule-check and scantling calculations to advanced tools for finite element structural analysis. Geir Dugstad, Director of Classification at DNV GL – Maritime said, “With this new version we have a very efficient rule calculation tool on the market.

Damen Launches Free Dredge Calculator

Dredge projects are tendered around the globe on a daily basis. Consequently, dredging contractors have to make new calculations, involving various production parameters, when preparing project quotations. Damen has introduced an online dredge job calculator to unburden contractors of this time-consuming, and therefore costly, tasks. For every dredging job, whether it is a maintenance dredging, sand dredging or capital dredging project, the local government concerned will present a public tender.

DNV GL’s latest Container Ship Forum and Bulk Carrier Forum looked at a broad spectrum of topics including environmental regulations, trends in ship design as well as the new DNV GL rule set. Some 150 representatives from the container and bulk industry met with DNV GL experts at the forums in Hamburg to hear the presentations and participate in informal discussions. As economy of scale is reducing transportation costs per box, the demand for ever bigger vessels is continuing.

Quantitative Risk Analysis for LNG Terminals

Wim Lafeber

Widescale Development of LNG Bunkering is Expected. Lloyd’s Register recently conducted a survey that indicated that the majority of major ports around the world are either planning for, or are anticipating, the widescale development of LNG bunkering. One of the locations is the Port of Rotterdam, which is a busy port with dense traffic on the various waterways consisting of both maritime and inland vessels. During the analysis, the probability of ship collisions was assessed and then the consequences were identified.

Classification Society BV Sharpens Ice Tools

Photo in public domain

Bureau Veritas has responded to demand for safe LNG transportation in the Arctic regions by developing new high-level tools to assess cargo sloshing in ice conditions. It has also developed a cutting-edge probabilistic method for assessing ice loads on structure which will reduce the time and data needed to assess the structure of vessels and units designed for heavy ice operation. Pierre Besse, Director of Innovation, Bureau Veritas, says, “All eyes are on the Arctic sea routes and on the opening up of the Arctic mineral and energy resources.

New Initiatives Probe Thruster Interaction Effects

MARIN has a long history in research into the performance of thrusters during Dynamic Positioning (DP) operations. Research on ducted propellers started in the late 1960s (Oosterveld) but a lot of today’s knowledge on thruster interaction effects was developed in the late 1980s and early 1990s (Nienhuis). As a result of the application of DP systems on many different vessels, there is continued interest in this subject. Today, newly developed tools enable more detailed measurements and computer simulations of the thrusters on DP vessels.
