Contract Finalized for Two New Ferries for the Little Minch

Caledonian Maritime Assets Ltd (CMAL) confirmed the signing of the Bank Refund Guarantee (BRG) for two new vessels for the Little Minch routes between Uig, Lochmaddy and Tarbert (Harris).Work to build the ferries will now begin at Cemre Marin Endustri A.S shipyard in Turkey, with an expected delivery date for both in June and October 2025 respectively.They will be built to the same specification as the vessels for Islay, which are already under construction at Cemre. Turkish Yard Starts Construction of Two Ferries for Scotland

Keel laying and steel-cutting ceremonies for two new ferries being built for Scotland's Caledonian Maritime Assets Ltd (CMAL) were held this week at Cemre Marin Endustri shipyard in Turkey.The first ferry in the production timeline has had its keel laid, while steel-cutting for the second vessel has also begun ā€“ three weeks earlier than planned.The new, 94.8-meter vehicle/passenger ferries will each have capacity for up to 450 passengers and 100 cars or 14 commercial vehiclesā€¦

Cemre Selected as Preferred Bidder to Build Two Ferries for Little Minch

The preferred bidder has been named for a contract to build two new ferries to support the communities at Uig, Lochmaddy and Tarbert (Harris).Caledonian Maritime Assets Ltd (CMAL) said it intends to award the contract to the Cemre Marin Endustri A.S shipyard in Turkey, following a 10 day standstill period.In October 2022, The Scottish Government prioritised additional funding to enable CMAL to accelerate plans for replacement vessels. The two new vessels will be built to the same specification as the existing ferries under construction at Cemre for Islay.

The construction of Caledonian Maritime Assets Ltd's (CMAL) two new ferries for Islay is officially underway after a steel-cutting ceremony at Cemre Marin Endustri shipyard in Turkey on Monday.The new 94.8-meter vehicle passenger ferries will each have capacity for up to 450 passengers and 100 cars or 14 commercial vehicles, providing a combined 40% increase in vehicle and freight capacity on the Islay routes and improving the overall resilience of the wider fleet. Refurbished Ferry Delivered to CalMac

A newly refurbished ferry has been delivered to provide additional capacity for operator CalMac Ferries on the west coast of Scotland.Purchased out of Norway in 2021 and renamed Loch Frisa, the vessel departed Dales Marine Services in Leith on May 29 for repositioning to Oban where it is undertaking familiarization and entry-in-to service activities.Starting in mid-June, the double-ended RoPax ferry will be phased into the Oban-Craignure timetable, in tandem with Coruisk. World First: Kongsberg Launches Full-scale Hydrogen-based Propulsion System

Norway's Kongsberg has announced "a world first" by testing and verifying a full-scale, full-size, zero-emissions drivetrain powered by hydrogen fuel cells designed for ships and ferries. The project demonstrates that the technology is now mature for using hydrogen (H2) as an energy carrier, Kongsberg said.ā€œWith a verified and tested hydrogen-based propulsion system, we take the next step in zero-emission solutions at sea. Scottish Govt Takes Over Ferguson Shipyard

Ferguson Marine Shipyard in Port Glasgow, Scotland, is now set to enter public ownership.The Scottish Government has announced that it has reached an agreement with administrators to take the Ferguson Marine shipyard in Port Glasgow into public control.According to government sources, the agreement means two ferries currently under construction at the yard for Caledonian Maritime Assets Ltd (CMAL) will be completed.A program board has been set up by Scotland's economy secretary Derek Mackay to ensure effective completion of the two ferries being built at Ferguson Marine shipyard.More jobs could be created at newly nationalized Ferguson Marine in order to complete the two vessels which nearly sank the shipyardā€¦

Scot Govt Takes Over Two Freight Ferries

The two freight ferries serving the Northern Isles have been bought by the Scottish government. Vessels MV Helliar and MV Hildasay will join the Caledonian Maritime Assets Ltd (CMAL) fleet, having previously been chartered from Fortress.The sister vessels operate on the lifeline routes from Aberdeen to Kirkwall, Orkney and Lerwick, said a press note from CMAL, which owns 26 piers and harbours around Scotland.Minister for Energy, Connectivity and the Islands, Paul Wheelhouse, said: ā€œOur ferry services are iconic transport links that play a vital role for our island economies, so itā€™s important that we secure the two freight ferries for the future.ā€œPurchasing the vessels outright will also bring financial benefits by delivering savings to the public purse over the longer term.

Caledonian Maritime Assets Buys Three Ferries

A deal has been agreed for the three passenger ferries serving the Northern Isles to be purchased outright by Caledonian Maritime Assets Ltd (CMAL) with loan funding from the Scottish Government. The MV Hamnavoe, MV Hrossey and MV Hjaltland, which have previously been leased from Royal Bank of Scotland, will be taken into CMAL ownership. An 18 month extension to the current Northern Isles Ferry Services contract has also been agreed to allow further progress to be made with the ongoing review of procurement policy. Serco NorthLink Ferries will continue to operate the services until 31st October 2019 under the extended contract. Ministerā€¦

Kongsberg Maritime has been awarded Engineering, Procurement, Construction & Installation (EPCI) contracts with the Glasgow based shipbuilder and marine fabricator, Ferguson Marine Engineering Limited (FMEL). The contracts, worth more than NOK 160 Million, cover deliveries to two 100 meter ferries for Caledonian Maritime Assets Ltd (CMAL). Kongsberg Maritime, together with its wholly owned subsidiary Kongsberg Maritime Engineering (KME) will execute the project. KME will provide all engineering, procurement and project management while Kongsberg Maritime will supply a 'Full Picture' system delivery. The ferries will be 'dual-fuel' vessels so they can operate on liquefied natural gas (LNG) and marine dieselā€¦

Kongsberg Maritime informs it has been awarded engineering, procurement, construction and installation (EPCI) contracts worth more than NOK 160 million with the Glasgow based shipbuilder and marine fabricator Ferguson Marine Engineering Limited (FMEL) for two new 100-meter ferries for Caledonian Maritime Assets Ltd (CMAL). The ferries will be dual-fuel vessels so they can operate on liquefied natural gas (LNG) and marine diesel, and are designed to carry 127 cars or 16 HGVs, or a combination of both and up to 1,000 passengers. Kongsberg Maritime, together with its wholly owned subsidiary Kongsberg Maritime Engineering (KME), will execute the project; KME will provide all engineering, procurement and project management while Kongsberg Maritime will supply a ā€˜Full Pictureā€™ system delivery.

Wärtsilä Propulsion for First UK Dual-fuel Ships

he first ever UK domestic dual-fuelled new build vessels will feature fully integrated Wärtsilä propulsion machinery packages. Wärtsilä will also supply extended engineering and site support services. The two ships, both 102 metre long ro-ro passenger ferries, are being built for Caledonian Maritime Assets Ltd (CMAL) based in Port Glasgow, Scotland. The contracts with Wärtsilä were recorded in December 2015. Besides being the first dual-fuel vessels for CMAL, they are also the first ever dual-fuel ships to be built in the UK. These will be built by Ferguson Marine Engineering Ltd. The yard is located on the River Clyde in Glasgow. "This project highlights the fact that high-end, technologically advanced commercial shipbuilding is again present in Scotland.

Ferguson Signs $150mln LNG Ferries for CMAL

Scotland-based Ferguson Marine Engineering (FMEL) has signed a deal to build two 100-meter, dual-fuel ferries for Caledonian Maritime Assets Ltd (CMAL) in a contract worth £97 million (USD 150 million) that will boost shipbuilding on the River Clyde and secure 150 shipyard jobs. Back in August, the government of Scotland named the rejuvenated Scottish yard  as the preferred tenderer for the contract to build the two ferries for the state-backed ferry operator, Caledonian MacBrayne (CalMac). FMEL Port Glasgow will design and build the new vessels, testing and equipping them for delivery in 2018. The shipyard has already delivered two hybrid ferries to CMAL and will launch a third in December.

Imtech Marine informs it has been awarded a third contract to supply the electric and hybrid propulsion system for a hybrid ferry operated by Caledonian Maritime Assets Ltd (CMAL) of Scotland. Ferguson Marine, the Glasgow-based yard which built the first two CMAL diesel electric, hybrid seagoing ferries, launched a tender last year and Imtech Marine was given the contract in late February. For the third hybrid ferry, Imtech Marine will, next to the diesel-electric and Li-Ion battery hybrid propulsion system, additionally carry out the electrical installation.

Scottish-owned Caledonian Maritime Assets Ltd (CMAL) has chosen Voith propulsion systems for its new hybrid ferry. Like its sister vessels, MV Hallaig and MV Lochinvar, the new hybrid ferry will be built by Ferguson Shipbuilders in Glasgow. CMAL relies on two VSP 16R5 EC/90-1 as well as two bow-tooth couplings and the Voith electronic control system. The new ferry will use the same electronic control system already installed on the MV Hallaig. The control system consists of a modular hardware and software architecture and offers many control features and standardized interfacesā€¦

38% Fuel Savings for Hybrid Ferry

When Imtech Marine was asked to supply a hybrid propulsion system to the first ever diesel electric, hybrid seagoing ferries to the Scottish state-owned ferry operator, Caledonian Maritime Assets Ltd. (CMAL) in 2011, fuel savings of around 20% were expected, the company said. Following extensive trials Imtech Marine announced that the actual fuel savings with the innovative hybrid system - consisting of diesel electric in combination with battery technology - were up to 38%. CMAL operates 30 ferries on the west coast of Scotland to 18 islands.

The UK Chamber of Shipping's new Chief Executive, due to start in January 2014, will be Guy Platten, currently Chief Executive of Caledonian Maritime Assets Ltd (CMAL). Guy Platten is a master mariner with a long background in the marine industry ā€“ including serving as a deck officer in the Merchant Navy, an Inspector of Lifeboats for the RNLI, Salvage and Mooring Officer with the Ministry of Defence and as Director of Marine Operations with the Northern Lighthouse Board. Second Hybrid Ferry Launched on the Clyde

A cutting edge ferry, which is the second of two hybrid vessels, was launched on the Clyde today at Ferguson's shipyard in Port Glasgow. The ferries are being built following a Scottish Government investment worth over £20 million, which has continued the proud heritage and tradition of shipbuilding on the Clyde. The hybrid ferry MV Lochinvar is one of only two passenger and vehicle roll-on, roll-off ferries in the world to incorporate a low-carbon hybrid system of diesel electric and lithium ion battery power. The innovative vessel was launched by Mrs. Patricia Platten, wife of Caledonian Maritime Assets Ltd (CMAL) CEO, Guy Platten.

Wärtsilä Engines for New Scottish RoPax Ferry

Wärtsilä to supply the main engines and auxiliary generating sets for a new Scottish-owned ferry. The RoPax vessel, designed for transporting both wheeled cargo and passengers, was ordered by Lloyds Banking Group and leased by Caledonian Maritime Assets, Ltd (CMAL), and is being built at the Flensburger Schiffbau Gesellschaft shipyard in Germany. Imtech Nominated for Innovation Award

Green Technology by Imtech Marine nominated for Maritime Innovation Award 2012. The intelligent energy management system by Imtech Marine is one of the four nominees for the Dutch Maritime Innovation Award 2012. This system, developed by Imtech Marine, controls the allocation of hybrid energy sources and energy consumers by means of intelligent automation and continuously realises the optimal energy efficient, lowest emission and cost efficient sailing profile. This way the user will be able to completely focus on the sailing tasks, without worrying about the usage of the available energy sources and energy consumers. The deployment of the energy management system will lead to fuel savings from 20% to a maximum of 25% using the hybrid solution.

Deltamarin, New Ferry Design Contracts

Caledonian Maritime Assets Ltd and Société des Traversiers du Québec have both ordered new passenger ferry designs from Deltamarin. Both companies named sustainable design and excellent energy efficiency as important criteria in the designs. The order of the Scottish Caledonian Maritime Assets Ltd (CMAL) comprises the concept design of two small RoPax ferries (311.6 ft & 114.8 ft). The designs will be used as tendering specifications to shipyards. CMAL are intending to commence a fleet replacement program in the near future, and these ferries will be a part of it. Canna Ferry Gets Green Passport

The passenger and vehicle ferry Canna has become the first ship in Caledonian Maritime Assets Ltd's fleet to be issued with a Lloydā€™s Register Green Passport. This follows a training workshop for CMAL staff and a comprehensive audit process managed by Lloydā€™s Register. The Green Passport - officially termed an Inventory of Hazardous Materials (IHM) - will accompany the ship throughout its operational life and will be reviewed by a member of the Lloyd's Register Group on an annual basis.
