First ORC Operation on Maersk Vessel

The newly developed waste heat recovery system "Hydrocurrent Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) Module 125EJW" 1 by MHI Marine Machinery & Engine Co., Ltd. (President: Kazuo Soma, Head Office: Nagasaki) has begun operation on the vessel named Arnold Maersk belonging to Maersk Line. The ORC system enables the utilization of extremely low temperature heat sources to generate electrical power at low-cost and high-efficiency in marine applications. In concrete terms, the system generates electricity using the waste heat of the main engine jacket cooling water (approx. 85°C), and by reducing the load on the vessel's main generator, cuts CO2 emissions and improves the efficiency of the vessel's plant. The ORC has an output of 125 kW and is fitted to the Arnold Maersk.

Hybrid Turbocharger Uses Calnetix Tech

The MET Hybrid Turbocharger from Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Marine Machinery & Engine Co. Ltd. (MHI-MME) uses a motor generator system and power electronics developed by Calnetix Technologies. The Japan Machinery Foundation presented its President’s Award to MHI-MME for the new-technology turbocharger in the 36th Energy Conserving Machinery competition last month. Calnetix’s patented Magnaforce high-speed permanent magnet motor generator is housed within the turbocharger. By diverting a small portion of the engine exhaust gas that would normally be dedicated entirely to the turbocharger, the new MET Hybrid is able to provide all the auxiliary electric power required for the ship, eliminating the need for running a separate diesel generator.

Calnetix Technologies Notches 3 New Patents

The U.S. Patent Office has awarded three new patents to Calnetix Technologies, a developer of high-speed motor generators, magnetic bearings and control systems and energy recovery technologies. These new awards bring the company’s total patent count to 33. The three new patents include a bidirectional pumping and energy recovery system by Vice President of Business Development Herman Artinian and Director of Business Development and Special Programs Venkateshwaran Krishnan; a flywheel and battery-based power supply system by Business Unit Leader Frank DeLattre and Director of Customer Service Oliver Ulibas; and a common monitoring and/or control of a flywheel and battery-based power supply system by Ulibas and Director of Engineering Octavio Solis.

Calnetix Technologies to Present at ASME ORC 2015

Engineers from Calnetix Technologies will present at the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) 2015 Conference in Brussels, Belgium, Oct. 12-14. Controls and Systems Engineer Chris Sellers will give a paper, co-authored by Director of Systems Engineering Parsa Mirmobin, entitled “Advanced Controls of Organic Rankine Cycle for Highly Transient Fluctuations during Initial Startup” in Session 9: Heat Exchangers, on Tuesday at 9:40 a.m. Development Engineer Errol Yuksek will deliver a paper on “Waste Heat Utilization of Main Propulsion Engine Jacket Water in Marine Application,” also co-authored by Mirmobin, in Session 13: Waste Heat Recovery from Engines II, on Tuesday at 3:20 p.m.

Shipboard Waste Heat Recovery Technology

Calnetix Technologies, LLC has published a White Paper describing new processes for producing supplemental power for a ship’s electrical load. The White Paper, entitled New-Technology Shipboard System Converts Heat from Engine Jacket Water into Electrical Power, is available for free download. Calnetix, working in close cooperation with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Marine Machinery and Engine Company (MHI-MME), has developed a system called Hydrocurrent, which uses an Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) heat transfer process and a patented turbo-generator power system to convert thermal energy from heat in the engine’s jacket water into mechanical power to generate electricity.

Calnetix System Converts Waste Heat into Electric Power

Calnetix Technologies today announced the introduction of a revolutionary new system that produces up to 125 kW of power for the ship’s electric load from heat recovered out of the engine’s jacket water. Calnetix to Display Waste Energy Converter at SMM

At SMM 2014, Calnetix Technologies will showcase a new system developed with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Marine Machinery and Engine Company (MHI-MME) that captures heat from marine engine jacket water and converts it to electricity for shipboard consumption. The Hydrocurrent system produces up to 125 kW of power for the ship’s electrical load, while still leaving sufficient heat in the jacket water for the fresh water maker. The system pays for itself in a very short time by reducing the load on the ship’s bunker-fueled generators, resulting in fuel savings of up to 200 tons per year.

Calnetix Drive System Passes Navy Tests

Calnetix Technologies, a manufacturer of high-speed permanent magnet motor generators, power electronics and magnetic bearings for a variety of applications and industries, passed the first shock and vibration test requirements for its motor and magnetic bearing technology, which are an integral part of a new generation of shipboard chillers for the U.S. Navy. Shock and vibration testing of the variable speed, two-stage, direct drive compressor was completed as part of the chiller prototype development program led by YORK Navy Systems, a Johnson Controls Company. “The testing is the first step in proving our capabilities in meeting the Navy’s aggressive performance, reliability and environmental goals,” said Vatche Artinian, Cofounder and Chief Executive Officer of Calnetix Technologies.

Calnetix Technologies Launches Magnetic Bearing Controller

Calnetix Technologies LLC has announced the commercial availability of its latest technology development, the Insight™ 3600 magnetic bearing controller. These state-of-the-art, compact, panel-mounted units are the company’s third generation of magnetic bearing controllers, offering control of advanced permanent magnet bias magnetic bearings in up to five independent axes. According to Herman Artinian, Vice President of Business Development at Calnetix, magnetic bearings are becoming essential components of high-speed rotating systems, helping to eliminate rotational friction as well as the need for lubrication. Magnetic bearing controllers monitor shaft position and provide the electrical current to maintain the magnetic fields that position a rapidly spinning shaft.
