Case Study: CAD/CAM for Naval Refit

The ANZAC Class is a ship class of 10 frigates: eight operated by the Royal Australian Navy and two operated by the Royal New Zealand Navy (RNZN). They have an overall length of 118 meters and a displacement of around 3,800 tons. In 2014, New Zealand ordered extensive modernizations to its frigates’ core combat and related systems. This would require the integration of the Lockheed Martin CMS 330, integrated with radar improvements, MBDA’s independently-guided Sea Ceptor missiles and an extensive array of other modern equipment.

ASC’s Autoload Onboard Stability Software Turns 25

Autoship Systems Corporation (ASC) of Vancouver, Canada announced that its onboard stability software Autoload is celebrating 25 years in the marine loading computer market. Installed on thousands of ships, rigs and platforms worldwide, Autoload can be found onboard virtually every type of vessel. ASC said it adopted a simple yet sophisticated philosophy for developing Autoload from the start: the program must be simple to use yet apply accurate mathematical analyses to all calculations.

Computer Aided Robotics Welding

CAD/CAM software maker SSI said it is developing solutions for Computer Aided Robotics Welding (CAR-W) consistent with its recent innovations in the area of 3D weld management. This research project is under the aegis of the U.S. Navy’s National Shipbuilding Research Program (NSRP). In December SSI representatives met with representatives from Wolf Robotics and Edison Welding Institute to advance this project. Other organizations involved include Bollinger Shipyards, Ingalls Shipbuilding, NSWCCD, Purdue University, Colorado State University, Tony Macijewski and Longview Advisors.

Established in 1984 as a company dedicated to engineering marine motors, Armor Mécanique is situated in the port of Lorient. And while the coastal view remained picturesque, the ensuing years brought change. The company, founded by Marcel Février, is now dedicated to precision engineering and boilermaking. In 2005, upon Février’s retirement, experienced precision engineer Franck Vincent took on management of the company. Holland Shipyards Selects ShipConstructor

Holland Shipyards has selected SSI's ShipConstructor software for its new shipbuilding activities. Holland Shipyard undertakes newbuilding, repair and conversion of small and medium-sized vessels. Florian den Besten, Naval Architect with Holland Shipyards, explained his company's thinking when purchasing new CAD/CAM software. He said, "First of all, the system is user-friendly as ShipConstructor is AutoCAD based and contains all features needed by our architects. Secondly, the architects appreciate the ease of making 2D drawings with the MarineDrafting application of the ShipConstructor Hull Structure Premium Suite. The 2D drawings are used for workshop and classification drawings. The simplification of the technical drawings, by using appropriate symbols, makes them clear and readable.

SSI Releases ShipConstructor 2015

The release of ShipConstructor 2015 CAD/CAM software is a key part of SSI’s new plan to increase flexibility, security, convenience and simplicity for its clients in the shipbuilding and offshore markets, the company said. According to SSI, ShipConstructor 2015 contains several new catalogs, an augmentation SSI claims is of immediate benefit, as they will help users quickly and accurately model components to correct specifications. These catalog additions and changes include the following XML standard templates: PipeCatalog-ASME-CarbonSteel.XML, ImperialWeldStandards.XML and MetricWeldStandards.XML. According to SSI, of particular note are the details related to the addition of the catalog for ASME Carbon Steel Pipe.

(Sener) is hoping to regain a foothold via its FORAN CAD/CAM software in the North American market, and to use that opening to crack the Big Six military shipyards, landing at least one lucrative long-term contract. But first, it’s going to have get past its chief competition on these shores, Vancouver-based SSI’s ShipConstructor software, CATIA from Dassault Systèmes of France, and Nupas-Cadmatic, jointly owned by Numeriek Centrum Groningen B.V. of the Netherlands and Cadmatic Oy of Finland.

New SENER Directors for Asia and Pacific

The release of ShipConstructor 2015 CAD/CAM software is a key part of SSI's new plan to increase flexibility, security, convenience and simplicity for its clients in the shipbuilding and offshore markets, the company said. UBC Undergrads' CAD Initiative Rewarded by SSI

Wishing to enhance their elegibility for jobs in Western Canada's expanding shipbuilding industry, a group of University of British Columbia (UBC) Mechanical Engineering students approached SSI about further training in the company's ShipConstructor CAD/CAM application. The developers responded by putting on a special training course for them, plus access to the software. The students had found ShipConstructor software to be the industry production standard at the Canadian marine design offices where they were serving internships, for instance at STX Canada Marine and Robert Allan Ltd.

SENER Wins Engineering Company of the Year

The engineering and technology group SENER has been awarded in The European Energy Awards 2013 as Engineering Company of the Year. The technology group has more than 5,500 professionals across 50 offices globally. SENER received this award for innovative projects such as the Gemasolar solar thermal plant. Located in Seville, Spain, this is the first commercial central tower power plant with molten salt storage system in operation in the world and also the only solar plant capable to produce electricity round the clock.

Nupas-Cadmatic Signs Software Contract with NAS

Nupas-Cadmatic has signed a deal with North American Shipbuilding (NAS), part of Edison Chouest Offshore and based in Larose, Louisiana. The contract includes the complete configuration of more than 50 structural, outfitting, electrical, production and nesting licenses. The deal was signed after a trial period that challenged the software’s capabilities. SKDY had chosen to standardize on SmartMarine 3D and successfully demonstrated its use of the industry-leading solution with a steel-cutting ceremony. With Intergraph's continuous enhancement of SmartMarine 3D, the solution has out-of-the-box content and functionality to support ship production. Today, SKDY has successfully incorporated its specific requirements into SmartMarine 3D, which are fully automated across its production processes.
