Canada to Target Smuggling of Steel Intended to Dodge US Tariffs

Canada will act to prevent the smuggling of cheap steel and aluminum into the North American market to avoid new U.S. tariffs on the metals, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Tuesday. Trudeau said earlier this month he was aware of concerns that countries facing the tariffs could try to ship supplies through Canada and pretend the metals had been produced in Canadian facilities. Under new measures unveiled by Trudeau's office on Tuesday, the Canada Border Services Agency will gain new powers to stop companies that try to dodge duties.

Detroit Agencies Perform Maritime Security Exercise

Detroit Coast Guard members are participating in a Southeast Michigan Area Maritime Security Committee multi-agency table-top exercise Wednesday at the Detroit Fire Department Regional Training Center. The purpose of this exercise is to test plans and policies of federal, provincial, state and local area agencies in response to a transportation security incident. In accordance with the Homeland Security Exercise and Evaluation Program, a table-top exercise is a discussion based exercise. There will not be any resources deployed directly as a result of this exercise. More than 150 participants from 50 agencies are expected to participate in the exercise.

Canada Introduces Regulations to Address Aquatic Invasive Species

The entry into force of new regulations to strengthen the prevention of aquatic invasive species (AIS) in Canadian waters was announced today by Canada’s Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, Gail Shea. The Government of Canada, which spends more than $14 million on AIS issues annually, worked with provincial and territorial governments to develop the Aquatic Invasive Species Regulations. Kvichak Delivers 2 Boats to West Coast Launch

Kvichak Marine delivered two all-aluminum 36.6’ crew/pilot boats to West Coast Launch, Ltd. (WCL), which operates year-round as a water transportation company in Prince Rupert, B.C., Canada. The new vessels, Lelu and Kitson, will join the five vessels already operating in the West Coast Launch fleet, as the company prepares for the growth of Prince Rupert and the demands for transportation with the LNG industry. Lelu and Kitson are powered by twin Volvo D11 diesel engines rated for 510 bhp and ZF 205 marine gears. The engines are coupled to Hamilton 322 waterjets providing a speed of 35 knots.

Livingston Appoint Candace Sider V-P Regulatory, Canada

Customs brokerage and trade compliance advisors, Livingston, say that to better reflect the company’s integral role in regulatory affairs for its clients, Livingston has appointed Candace Sider to the newly created position of Vice President, Regulatory Affairs Canada. Sider will be responsible for developing and implementing government affairs strategy, as well as the overall management of Livingston’s political engagement with federal and provincial officials, regulatory agencies and key policymakers. ISS Launches ACI Department for Canadian Ports

Inchcape Shipping Services (ISS), a maritime services provider, has launched an Advanced Cargo Information (ACI) department for Canadian ports following new regulations and procedures for cargo and vessel reporting by the CBSA (Canada Border Services Agency). Based in Montreal, Canada, the centralized ISS ACI department will offer expert guidance on all cargo and reporting requirements to shipowners or charterers with vessels arriving at Canadian ports. Services provided by the new ACI department will include assistance in obtaining a carrier code, advance manifesting for all Canadian Ports and, if required, conveyance reporting and arrival messaging. Several major carriers have already subscribed to the service.

Canada Statement on the MV Sun Sea Migrants

The Canada Border Services Agency has completed the initial examinations of the migrants of the Sun Sea vessel and is now in a position to provide an update on the processing of these individuals. The CBSA can confirm that it has processed 492 migrants. Of that number, there are: 380 men, 63 women and 49 minors. It should be noted that the total number of adults and minors is subject to change as the CBSA must still confirm the identity and age of all migrants. The CBSA also confirmed that all adult migrants have been detained for examination under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act and the necessary steps are being taken to address this situation. Accompanied minors will remain with their mothers in low-risk facilities and, wherever possible, will be accommodated together.
