Canada Steamship Lines (CSL) set a new record at the Viterra terminal in the Port of Thunder Bay yesterday, when it loaded 31,362 metric tonnes of grain on CSL Welland, breaking the previous record of 31,143 metric tonnes. The cargo of wheat will be discharged in Montreal, destined for international markets.“I commend Captain Rowe and his crew, the Viterra team, the Port of Thunder Bay, as well as our CSL teams on the ground who contributed to this achievement,” said Louis Martel, CSL President and CEO.

Canada Steamship Lines' 41-year-old self-unloading bulk carrier Salarium has reached the end of its service life and will be dismantled at a ship recycling yard in Turkey, CSL Group announced.The long-serving 35,656 DWT bulker made its final voyage at the end of 2019, loading salt in Bécancour, Que. on December 19 for discharge it in Oshawa, Ont. on December 27. The vessel was then laid up in Toronto until April 2020 when it was moved to Montreal.A CSL Group spokesperson told MarineLink the company will finalize the ship recycling yard in Turkey next week…

Algoma Central Corporation, the largest fleet of dry and liquid bulk carriers on the Great Lakes–St. Lawrence Waterway, is adding the crews from 27 of its vessels to an expanding network of whale watchers. For the first time, the crews on Algoma’s self-unloaders, bulkers, tankers and cement carriers will collect data about the whales they see on their journeys this summer."Algoma is committed to providing sustainable and environmentally responsible marine transportation,” said Gregg Ruhl, Algoma’s Chief Operating Officer.

Canada Steamship Lines welcomed M.V. Ferbec, a 49,502 DWT conventional geared bulk carrier equipped with four cranes and grabs, which is now fully operational in the Gulf of Saint Lawrence. The vessel, which previously operated in CSL’s Australian fleet as CSL Melbourne, is the largest vessel of its type in the Canadian domestic shipping market. Upon arrival in Québec City on May 13, 2017, the vessel underwent modifications to adapt to its new operating environment. Ferbec is now operating under Canadian flag in the Havre St-Pierre to Sorel corridor for long time-customer Rio Tinto. “It is by design and with great pride that we revived the name Ferbec for this vessel,” said Louis Martel, President and CEO of The CSL Group.

The Great Lakes Towing Company said it has repositioned its Tug Huron to Duluth, Minn. on Monday, January 2, 2017 to enhance capabilities for icebreaking, harbor assist and other services essential to commercial shipping in the Duluth-Superior region. The second of Canada Steamship Lines' (CSL) two newbuild Trillium Class Great Lakes bulk carriers, CSL St-Laurent, was delivered on November 26, 2014 and set sail on her maiden voyage on December 13. She departed at 20:00 CST from Yangfan shipyard on Zhoushan Island, China, en route to Canada where she is set to operate throughout the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River. The vessel is commanded by Captain Kevin Crouse and Chief Engineer Paul Beaudet, and is expected to take approximately 50-60 days to complete her voyage. CSL St-Laurent marks the successful completion of CSL's audacious newbuild program, which began with the delivery in December 2012 of the award-winning Trillium Class self-unloading Laker, Baie St. Paul.

On January 25, 2014, two newbuild Trillium Class bulk carriers were launched for Canada Steamship Lines Inc. (CSL) at Yangfan shipyard in Zhoushan, China. The 36,100-DWT, seaway size gearless bulkers are part of CSL’s ambitious fleet renewal program which oversaw the delivery of four new Trillium Class self-unloading Lakers and three Panamax self-unloaders in 2012-2013. The two new vessels are scheduled to enter the Canada Steamship Lines fleet later this year and will operate in the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Seaway system.

The St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation (SLSMC) announced that Gerald Carter has been appointed to its Board for a three-year term. He replaces Ralph Mercier as the representative for the Québec Provincial Government. Gerald Carter comes to the Seaway with a long history in marine transportation . He is a past President of Canada Steamship Lines Inc. (CSL), a major player in the Great Lakes / St. Lawrence Seaway system. Mr. Carter joined CSL in the early 1990s as Director of Information Systems. This appointment was followed by a series of progressively more responsible roles, leading to his nomination as President, a position he held from 2002 to 2012.

The final in a series of five Canada Steamship Lines' (CSL) state-of-the-art, new Trillium Class self-unloading Panamax vessels, the 228-meter long CSL Tacoma, embarked on her maiden voyage from the Chengxi Shipyard in Jiangyin, China on Oct. 12, and is making her maiden cargo voyage to San Francisco Bay. She is scheduled to arrive at the Port of Redwood City at noon on Wednesday, November 6, with sand and gravel construction materials from an Eagle Rock Aggregates quarry in British Columbia.

The St. Lawrence Seaway reported that year-to-date total cargo shipments for the period March 22-September 30 were 23 million metric tons. While this number is down 11% over the same period in 2012, U.S. ports continue to beat the odds with increased tonnage in several cargo categories.
