Leaders Call on Canadian Marine to Grow Economy
The Federal Election is an important opportunity to boldly support the marine industry as a means to sustainable Canadian growth. During this election and post-election period, political leaders are urged to build upon Canadian domestic shipping for the Canadian economy and sustainable economic growth. UPI Appoint Two New Executives
Energy industry project & construction management firm Universal Pegasus International (UPI) appoint two senior vice-presidents. The company name Tom Davison as Senior Vice President of Onshore Operations and Martin Morrison as Senior Vice President of Offshore Operations. In his role, Davison is responsible for the overall management, performance and growth of business for Onshore Operations at Universal Pegasus International. Additionally, he will provide technical leadership in project development and execution including the development of best practices and improving project delivery.
Coast Guard Holds Decommission LORAN Station Caribou
The Coast Guard is holding a decommissioning ceremony for its Long Range Aids to Navigation (LORAN) Station in Caribou, Maine, Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2010. The LORAN-C station was commissioned in November of 1974, marking 35-years of service. The Station transmitted the American northeast 9960 and Canadian East Coast 5930 navigation and timing signals. It has a crew of four active duty Coast Guard members. Termination of the LORAN-C program was supported through the enactment of the fiscal year 2010 Homeland Security Appropriations bill. Transimission of the American signal ended on February 8, 2010, and the Canadian signal was terminated on August 3, 2010.
New Rolls-Royce OSV for Canada
Rolls-Royce has won an order to design and equip a UT 755LN offshore support vessel with an integrated power, propulsion and motion control system, for use in the Canadian oil and gas market. Atlantic Towing Limited (Canada) has entered a long term charter with the Canadian oil and gas company EnCana Corporation for the vessel which will be built at the Halifax Shipyard in Nova Scotia. It will operate in the Deep Panuk field off the Canadian east coast. In addition to the ship design, Rolls-Royce will deliver a fully integrated equipment system. This includes diesel engines, propellers, reduction gears, tunnel thrusters, azimuth thrusters, steering gear, rudders, switchboards, automation and controls and deck machinery. The total value of the Rolls-Royce contract is around $10.5m.
Canadian and U.S. forces team up with Frontier Sentinel
Approximately 3,000 personnel from Canadian and U.S. military forces and government civilian agencies will participate in the full-scale training exercise Frontier Sentinel (EX FS 08-2), which will focus on maritime homeland security from June 9-13, 2008. The exercise will take place in the northwestern Atlantic Ocean, off the coasts of northeastern , specifically the waterways of and . "This exercise tests and validates the ability of forces, Canadian forces, and civilian agencies to work together to our mutual benefit," said the Exercise Director, Capt. Christian Haugen. "We have plans and procedures in place -- with Frontier Sentinel, we can see what works, and what needs polishing.
Seabulk Branches Out To Transhipment With New Office
Seabulk Systems has opened a new office in Montreal to handle transhipment opportunities on the U.S. and Canadian East Coast. A new-patented Capesize vessel unloader (SCU) will be used to unload Cape bulkers and a unique 10,000dwt self-unloader will be used for loading into Panamax/Cape ships. Captain John D. Pace has been appointed vice president, Marine Operations to manage Seabulk's Montreal operations. Captain Pace was involved in various aspects of self-unloading bulk carrier operations for more than 20 years at Canada Steamship Lines, most recently as vice president, Fleet Management.
Dead in the Water
Financial conditions at troubled Premier Cruise Line have obviously worsened, as the company is effectively out of business following the seizure of its five ships. In the process, thousands of vacationers have been left stranded. On Thursday U.S. investment bank Donaldson Lufkin & Jenrette seized the company's Big Red Boats and other ships. Premier chief executive Bruce Nierenberg said DLJ held mortgages on five Premier ships, that the company was behind on debt payments, and DLJ had taken control of the ships with an eye to selling them in order to recover $49 million in debts.
