Germany Opens Remote-Controlled Center for Inland Shipping

SEAFAR, a Belgian technology and service provider for remote-controlled inland waterway shipping operations, has set up the first Remote Operations Center in Germany; a project completed in conjunction with HGK Shipping and Reederei Deymann.The Remote Operations Center, opened on February 28, 2024, enables captains to navigate vessels on inland waterways from dry land, a development seen as central to stemming problems from the shortage of specialist workers. VFD Controlled Pumps Help Keep Barges Afloat

Culina Group to Set Base at Peel Group's Port Salford

Food and drink logistics giant, Culina Group, has been announced as the first major tenant at the new National Import Centre being developed by the Peel Group, as part of its multi-million pound Port Salford development (located approximately 6 miles (9.7 km) west of Manchester City Centre in the UK). Culina Group will take occupation of the first warehouse distribution unit to be built on the Port Salford site - the UK’s first tri-modal inland port facility and Distribution Park, accessible by rail, road and short sea-shipping. The property comprises 26,022 sq. m. (280,000 sq. ft.) of accommodation, including ancillary offices, service yard and parking.

Internal Waterway Shipping 2008 Results

Now at 12.2 million tons, the volume of goods carried between the Port of Hamburg and the hinterland by inland waterway vessel in 2008 exceeded all previous levels. This marked a 1.5 percent increase on the operating results of the previous year. In Germany as a whole, the shipment of goods by inland waterway vessel in 2008 dropped by 1.6 percent. The most important goods categories were mineral oil products, gases, coal and agricultural and forestry products. The latter chalked up the highest rate of growth last year, followed by chemical products, fertilizers and finished and semi-finished goods, which are generally carried by container. Container transport is of special importance for the Port of Hamburg.
