America's Sea Services Building Large Fleet of Small Ships and Craft

Not every vessel in the U.S. Navy is built for major combat operations on the high seas. There are large numbers of boats and service craft that provide essential services to the sea services, the nation and its partners.The U.S. Navy procures about 100 small boats per year. Some of these boats are based on commercial designs, procured to a Navy developed specification that tailors the requirements to the end user needs. Seven people were rescued from a tug that went adrift off the U.S. East Coast.A crew member aboard the tug Legacy notified watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Maryland-National Capital Region at about 3:30 a.m. Saturday that while towing a 290-foot barge from New Jersey, to Guyana, a 1,000-foot towing line became entangled and fouled their starboard propeller about 30 miles offshore from Ocean City, Md.The vessel continued to make way on one engine when the tow line snapped. Tanker Helps Rescue Overdue Boaters off US East Coast

A Hong Kong registered tanker assisted in the rescue of two men adrift in a sailboat off the U.S. East Coast.On Sunday, watchstanders at the U.S. Coast Guard Fifth District command center were notified of an overdue sailing vessel, Atrevida II, which was sailing from Cape May, N.J. to Marathon, Fla. The two men aboard, 65-year-old Kevin Hyde and 76-year-old Joe Ditomasso, were last in contact with family and friends on December 3, when they departed Oregon Inlet, N.C. The Coast Guard began urgent marine information broadcasts and direct communication with commercial vessels in the area in an attempt to locate the Atrevida II. A search effort was launched, involving multiple Coast Guard aircraft and cutters, vessels from the U.S.

The U.S. Coast Guard rescued four people from a life raft after a commercial fishing vessel caught fire about 16 miles southeast of Cape May, N.J., Saturday morning. Oil Tanker Tows Disabled Sailboat to Safety

A Singapore flagged oil tanker came to the rescue of four French sailors whose sailboat became disabled by broken sails and engine failure approximately 225 miles east of Cape May, N.J. on Thursday, June 7.U.S. Coast Guard rescue authorities received a notification from French rescue personnel that the 43-foot sailboat Simbad had a disabled engine and broken sails and required assistance. The Coast Guard took delivery of the 154-foot patrol craft on April 20, 2017 in Key West, Fla. The vessel’s commissioning is scheduled for July 4, 2017 in Pascagoula, Miss. US Coast Guard Finalizes Report on Death of Coast Guard Recruit

The Coast Guard announced Tuesday that it finalized its Major Incident Investigation (MII) Report into the July 2016 death of a Coast Guard recruit at Coast Guard Training Center (TRACEN) Cape May, N.J. Seaman Recruit Aaron Redd died July 7, 2016, after collapsing at the training center during an initial fitness assessment run with his recruit company. In its summary findings, the MII board found that Redd’s death was the result of a heat-related illness exacerbated by an underlying medical condition. The condition is not disqualifying from the military. While the MII board also found that the Coast Guard followed established policy, TRACEN Cape May strengthened practices and procedures with regard to in-processing recruits to improve safety for all.

The U.S. Coast Guard has taken delivery of USCGC Bailey Barco on February 7, 2017 in Key West, Fla. The vessel is scheduled to be commissioned in Ketchikan, Alaska in June, 2017. USCGC Bailey Barco is the 22nd vessel in the Coast Guard's Sentinel-class Fast Response Cutter (FRC), built by Bollinger Shipyards using an in-service parent craft design based on the Damen Stan Patrol Boat 4708. The 154-foot patrol has a flank speed of 28 knots, state-of-the-art command, control, communications and computer technology, and a stern launch system for the vessel’s 26 foot cutter boat.

Bollinger Shipyards has delivered the USCGC JOHN MCCORMICK, the 21st Fast Response Cutter (FRC) to the U.S. Coast Guard. The 154 foot patrol craft USCGC JOHN MCCORMICK is the 21st vessel in the Coast Guard's Sentinel-class FRC program, and the first FRC to be stationed at Ketchikan, Alaska. The FRC has been described as an operational “game changer,” by senior Coast Guard officials. Previous cutters have been stationed in the 7th Coast Guard District in Florida or San Juan, PR, and two have been stationed in the 5th Coast Guard District in Cape May, NJ.

Bollinger Shipyards has delivered the 19th Fast Response Cutter (FRC), USCGC Rollin Fritch, to the U.S. Coast Guard. The 154-foot patrol craft USCGC Rollin Fritch is the 19th vessel in the Coast Guard's Sentinel-class FRC program. All previous cutters have been stationed in the 7th Coast Guard District in Florida or San Juan, Puerto Rico. The decision to homeport the Rollin Fritch in Cape May, N.J. is significant because it expands the footprint of FRC operations beyond the Bahamas and the Caribbean. Eventually FRCs will be stationed in virtually every coastal state.

In 1964, Lyndon B. Johnson was President; the Beatles first appeared on the Billboard Chart with I Want to Hold Your Hand; the World's Fair opened in New York and the Cape May-Lewes Ferry made its grand debut. On July 1, 1964, the very first ferry vessel departed the Lewes, Delaware terminal at 6:47 a.m. The ferry carried eight vehicles and 15 passengers. Since then, more than 43 million passengers and over 14 million vehicles have made the scenic, 17- mile, 85-minute trip across Delaware Bay to and from Victorian Cape May, NJ and historic Lewes, Delaware.

Fisherman Medevaced off Cape May, NJ

The Coast Guard medevaced a fisherman 75 miles southeast of Cape May, New Jersey, Thursday. The 43-year-old man was fishing with three other people aboard the 80-foot fishing boat Starbrite when he started experiencing difficulty breathing and numbness of his extremities. Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Delaware Bay in Philadelphia received initial notification Thursday at approximately 8:30 a.m. A helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Atlantic City, New Jersey, arrived on scene at approximately 11 a.m. The helicopter crew hoisted the man and transferred him to Atlantic General Hospital in Berlin, Maryland. Injured Fisherman Rescued off New Jersey

An injured fisherman was rescued by the U.S. Coast Guard on Friday 62 miles east of Cape May, N.J. A crew member from the fishing vessel Stacy Lee called Coast Guard watchstanders at approximately 12:45 a.m. to request assistance for a crew member who suffered a leg injury. USCG Training Center Holds Heritage Event

Members of the U.S. Coast Guard Training Center, Cape May, N.J., were treated to a speech on the history of the Lenape Indian tribe during a Native American Heritage event held on base, Nov. Wesley Dunn, vice president of the Museum of Indian Culture, presented interesting facts about the tribe that inhabited the area more than 500 years ago. Additionally, Dunn brought many Lenape artifacts which he displayed for members to examine. The event was put on by the training center's Leadership, Diversity Advisory Council to highlight Native American Heritage Month. "This LDAC is excited to sponsor this presentation because it's a great opportunity to learn about the pre-colonial history of our community," said Lt.Cmdr. Doug Daniels, president of the LDAC.
