This Day in Coast Guard History – July 14

1926- The first radio-beacon established in Alaska, at Cape Spencer, was placed in commission. 1949-U.S. Coast Guardsmen from Point Allerton and Boston Lifeboat Stations figured prominently in one of the largest rescue operations in the history of Boston Harbor Massachusetts when they helped in removing 690 persons from the excursion steamer Nantasket, which had gone aground in a thick fog off Peddock’s Island. 1960- Following the loss of a propeller, which resulted in fuselage damage and an engine fire, a Northwest Airlines DC-7C airliner carrying 58 persons ditched in Philippine waters. During the Coast Guard-coordinated air search in the vicinity of the Polillo Islands, a Coast Guard UF amphibian aircraft sighted four life rafts, landed, and rescued 23 survivors. A U.S.

Hornbeck 3Q Results

•    Hornbeck Offshore Services, Inc. (NYSE: HOS) announced results for the third quarter ended September 30, 2008. Third quarter 2008 revenues increased 15.2% to $109.1 million compared to $94.7 million for the third quarter of 2007. Operating income was $52.6 million, or 48.2% of revenues, for the third quarter of 2008 compared to $44.9 million, or 47.4% of revenues, for the prior-year quarter. Net income for the third quarter of 2008 was $33.5 million, or $1.24 per diluted share, compared to $28.9 million, or $1.09 per diluted share in the year-ago quarter. EBITDA for the third quarter of 2008 was $65.5 million compared to third quarter 2007 EBITDA of $54.3 million.

NOAA Issues New Coast Pilot for Alaska

In order to promote safe navigation and enhance marine conservation, NOAA’s Office of Coast Survey and the National Marine Protected Areas Center have partnered to publish key information about the location, purpose, and permitted activities of existing marine managed areas off Alaska's southeastern coast in the United States Coast Pilot Volume 8. The U.S. Coast Pilot is used by the maritime industry, fishermen, the military, recreational boaters, and other coastal users of sensitive marine ecosystems. The southeastern Alaska edition includes marine managed areas between Dixon Entrance and Cape Spencer. It is the first in a series of Coast Pilot publications being produced for all regions throughout the United States. The other eight books of the U.S.
