Funding Only Bright Spot in President’s Budget - AAPA

The American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA), the recognized and authoritative voice of the seaport industry, yesterday noted some positive aspects but mostly disappointment over the funding levels and programmatic changes in federal port-related programs that were proposed today in President Obama’s fiscal 2016 budget. “International trade now accounts for fully 30 percent of the U.S. economy,” said Kurt Nagle, AAPA’s president and CEO. The President’s budget includes a $478 billion, six-year surface transportation reauthorization proposal, to be paid for with transition revenue from business tax reform. Greenfield Fund Takes Stake in German Wind Farm

The Marguerite Fund has acquired a 22.5% stake in the German greenfield Butendiek offshore wind farm. The Butendiek project is a 288 MW greenfield offshore wind farm located in the North-Sea in the German exclusive economic zone, 32 km west of the German Island of Sylt, and consisting of 80 Siemens 3.6 MW wind turbines. The start of the offshore construction works is scheduled for Spring 2014 and installation of the wind turbines is planned to take place between Autumn 2014 and Summer 2015. When commissioned the wind farm will produce 1,290 GWh p.a., enough to supply the equivalent of some 370,000 households with electricity each year. The cost of the project is estimated to be €1.3bn.

Stateview - New Leak Detection Tool

District energy specialists Mittel launches new version of its advanced leak detecting system Stateview. Swedish district energy infrastructure specialists Mittel Group announced the launch of a new version of Stateview, the group’s advanced system for detecting leaks in district energy systems. Among improvements in the new Stateview System II is a ten-fold increase of the wireless reach to 1,000 metres, giving field workers a much improved work environment. Stateview is a portable diagnostic tool for district energy pipe networks.

MARAD Awards $17.1m in Shipyard Grants

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration announced $17.1m in grants to 14 small shipyards in 10 states. The grants are part of the Assistance to Small Shipyards program. “Small shipyards are vitally important for the health of the maritime industry, and for the nation’s economy,” said Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood. The purpose of the grants is to make capital and infrastructure improvements that facilitate the efficiency, competitive operations, and quality in ship construction and repair. Small shipyards fall into two categories: those with fewer than 600 employees, and those with between 600 and 1200 employees. Maritime Administration Awards $9.8m in Shipyard Grants

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration announced $9.8m in grants to 19 small shipyards in the . The grants are part of the new Assistance to Small Shipyards program, set up under the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2006. “Small shipyards are vitally important for the health of the maritime industry, and for the economy of the Nation,” said Maritime Administrator Sean T. Connaughton. The purpose of the grants is to make capital and infrastructure improvements that facilitate the efficiency, cost-effectiveness and quality of domestic ship construction, conversion or repair for commercial and federal government use. The grants cover a maximum of 75-percent of the estimated cost of improvements. The companies are responsible for the remainder.
