USCG Strike Teams Provide Assistance

Seventy Coast Guard Strike Team members from the National Strike Force deployed to the World Trade Towers incident, Washington D.C., and Boca Raton, Fla., to assist other agencies with response as a result of terrorist attacks. The Coast Guard Strike Force, specialists in emergency and chemical response, were requested by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to assist with air monitoring, contractor oversight and operating washing stations in New York at Ground Zero and the Staten Island Landfill evidence collection site. In Washington, Strike Force members are dressed in Level B response gear to help gather samples at the Capitol Building and the Hart Senate Office Building. Additionally, they are providing contractor oversight and are operating washing sites on scene.

Keppel AmFELS Strengthens GOM Presence

In what could be construed as a sign that good times are indeed ahead for the Gulf of Mexico offshore business, Amfels Inc. was recently renamed Keppel AmFELS, Inc. leveraging the Keppel and FELS brand names in its vision to further strengthen its presence in the Gulf of Mexico. The renaming ceremony took place on November 15, 2004, at the Keppel yard in Brownsville, Texas. Guest-of-Honour, Honourable Congressman Solomon P. Hanjin Heavy Industries Recruits 20,000

Some 20,000 local male residents are being recruited by business titan Hanjin Heavy Industries & Construction Co., Ltd., of South Korea for its shipbuilding and ship repair projects. Former vice Gov. Ramon Lacbain II announced that Gov. Amor Deloso has created Task Force Hanjin (TFH) to fill up the company's labor requirements. Deloso said the task force chaired by Lacbain is assisting the Korean firm in recruiting job applicants from this province and nearby provinces for the multi-billion dollar shipbuilding projects of Hanjin in Zambales and South Korea. Lacban said that his task force is going around the province to recruit applicants to save them from traveling and spending transportation expenses to Subic Bay Freeport.

Ship Repair Yards Ask: Where's the Funding?

While much of the focus is trained on Naval new construction, the fact is that repair and maintenance on the existing U.S. Navy fleet has reached condition critical.Cutbacks from the Navy have left many vessels of its 300-member fleet to go without required repairs and maintenance because the money is not budgeted. Yards may however, find some relief at the end of this month, dependent upon whether Congress passes a supplemental bill for additional funding. Already five months into the government's fiscal year and ship repair yards have not seen a cent of additional funding from the Navy for the maintenance and repair of its fleet.
