The 6,400 standard passenger car capacity, Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL)-operated car carrier Grand Orion has made a first call for such a vessel type in Cambodia.The Japanese shipping company said in a release that the car carrier called at the Port of Sihanoukville, Cambodia, and discharged about 12,000 tons of construction machinery. Earlier this week, Port of Durban’s marine pilot Rainer Rauntenberg safely steered a car carrier vessel into the port as cyclonic weather conditions battered the Durban beach front. On Sunday, March 12, 2017, Rauntenberg steered the ro-ro vessel under adverse weather conditions believed to be caused by a tropical cyclone Enawo, which struck Madagascar last week. A video is available here. As a result of the rough weather conditions, the Port of Durban had to deploy three tugs to steer in the vessel. In normal weather conditions, one to two tugs are used.

A car carrier vessel has suffered a fire on one of its decks, approximately 40 miles off Harwich, the U.K. Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) reported. The U.S. flagged ship, Courage, reported the fire to the U.K. Coastguard at Dover Maritime Rescue Coordination Center just before 10 p.m., June 2. Using an inbuilt CO2 system to, crew members flooded a large area to put the fire out and continued their journey. The situation is currently contained. A Dover Coastguard RAF Wattisham helicopter was on standby, but was not needed. The vessel is now coming to Southampton where it is being monitored by the National Maritime Operations Center, MCA said.

Hoegh Osaka was held secure by tugs as winds in the Solent reached 60 knots last night, the U.K. Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) reported.   MCA said salvors are working to adjust the ballast system aboard the car carrier vessel and hope to begin pumping water from the car decks within the next 24 hours.   Salvors hope good weather over the next few days will allow for a reduction of the vessel’s list.   If weather permits, divers will perform a hull inspection today.

Salvors also checked the ballast system and intend to rig another pump in the lower hold to pump into the ship’s tanks as well as overboard. The weather, including high winds, continues to play a key role in the salvage operations’ timeline as salvors are forced to adjust plans around environmental conditions. Saturday’s weather conditions prevented any activity on the vessel other than to connect the third tug. The area’s weather forecast looks very poor this week, peaking at 6 p.m. on Wednesday to 6 a.m. Thursday.

Car carrier vessel Hoegh Osaka has been held by an anchor on the Alpha Anchorage overnight as weather conditions on scene have eased and the salvors boarded the vessel at 8:30 a.m. to prepare for the removal of water from the vessel, the U.K. Maritime and Coastguard Agency reported. The lengthy operation is expected to get underway today and continue during daylight hours over the weekend.   The vessel’s list will be constantly monitored while operations to remove the water inside are performed.   Divers have been forced to wait to carry out a further hull inspection due to weather conditions on-scene. According to MCA, divers are standing-by and will dive as soon as conditions permit.    No evidence of pollution has been reported.

Authorities hope to continue the salvage operations of car carrier vessel Hoegh Osaka which ran aground shortly after its departure from the Port of Southampton January 3. According to the U.K. Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA), Hoegh Osaka is currently stable at the anchorage after unexpectedly self-floating yesterday. Three tugs kept the vessel in place overnight despite some high winds in the early hours. Salvors estimate that up to 3,000 tons of water remains on the vessel and hope to begin pumping the water off today when the weather improves.
