Damen Delivers Tour Boat to Windermere Lake Cruises

On October 13, 2020, Damen Shipyards Group and Winander Leisure Limited signed the Protocol of Delivery and Acceptance for the official handover of MV Swift, a vessel to be operated by Windermere Lake Cruises Limited. The project has been a unique one, with Damen building the vessel inland on location at Windermere in the Lake District National Park in the U.K.Over the past 40 years, Damen has delivered more than 1,000 of vessels via the Damen Technical Cooperation (DTC). DTC makes possible the building of Damen vessels, anywhere in the world, at non-Damen locations.

Antwerp Port Inaugurates Solar Farm

The Port of Antwerp has inaugurated the first Concentrated Solar Thermal farm (CST) in Europe as part of its efforts to make its operations more eco- friendly.The pioneering energy technology generates eco-friendly heat from concentrated sunlight that can be used by industrial companies, claimed a press release from Europe’s second-largest seaport. The plant was installed for Adpo by the Genk-based energy company Azteq as part of a pilot project co-financed by the Flemish government.Industrial companies normally obtain heat for their processes from combustion of fossil fuels such as natural gas. Concentrated Solar Thermal energy (CST) is an innovative technology in which sunlight is concentrated by parabolic mirrors and so converted directly to heat.

Rotterdam Port Joins Noah's Train

The Port of Rotterdam Authority has announced that it has participated in ‘Noah’s Train’ as part of the Rail Freight Forward (RFF) initiative, a collaborative effort to cut freight transport emissions by 30% by 2030.The longest mobile work of art and ambassador of the RFF initiative, Noah’s Train, is an initiative launched by several European railway companies to promote freight transport by rail. Tolent Begins Triton Knoll Base Work

UK based contractor Tolent started work to construct a new multi-million offshore construction and operations base for Triton Knoll has officially started at Grimsby’s Royal Dock.Having been awarded the contract last month, Tolent has now begun work to construct control room, office and warehouse facilities that will become the new operations and maintenance base for the 857 megawatt (MW) offshore wind farm.Triton Knoll is a offshore wind farm and the largest in the portfolio of majority project shareholder Innogy that is currently in construction. IJmuiden Preps for No-deal Brexit

To keep traffic flowing around the ferry terminal in IJmuiden Seaport, Netherlands, in the event of a no-deal Brexit, preparations are underway for a temporary lorry parking location.According to a press release from the Port of Amsterdam Authority, a plan is also being drawn up to ensure that traffic flows smoothly. Deurganck Dock Gets Smart

With an annual freight volume of nearly 9 million TEU the Deurganck dock is by far the main centre of container handling in the port of Antwerp. But this tidal dock on the left bank of the Scheldt is also well on the way to becoming a hotspot for innovation. Thanks to a “smart quay” and an automatic sounding boat, shipping operations and berth maintenance in Antwerp’s largest dock will become a good deal more efficient. “The smart quay will enable us to make more efficient use of the berths available in the dock. And the automatic sounding boat will also make berth management more effective and pro-active, with the emphasis on prevention rather than cure,” explains Piet Opstaele, Innovation Enablement Manager for the Port Authority.

Chinese Shipyard Turns Into Car Parking

To cope up with so much financial strain, Hong Kong-based shipbuilders China Ocean Industry Group – formerly known as China Ocean Shipbuilding Industry Group – is literally being turned into a parking lot, reports Bloomberg. China Ocean Industry Group Ltd., which dropped “shipbuilding” from its name in March, acquired a car-park operator last year to meet an estimated shortage of 50 million parking spaces in the world’s most populous nation. The company plans to build and operate 100,000 lots in China within three years, contributing about 70 percent of total operating profit by then, according to Chief Executive Officer Zhang Shi Hong.

Chinese Port Blast Kills 50, Injures 700 More

Two huge explosions tore through an industrial area where toxic chemicals and gas were stored in the northeast Chinese port city of Tianjin, killing at least 50 people, including at least a dozen fire fighters, officials and state media said on Thursday. At least 700 people were injured, more than 71 seriously, the Tianjin government said on its Weibo microblog, and the official Xinhua news agency said two fires were still burning. Wednesday night's blasts, so large that they were seen by satellites in space, sent shockwaves through apartment blocks kilometres away in the port city of 15 million people. Internet videos showed fireballs shooting into the sky and the U.S. Geological Survey registered the blasts as seismic events.

East Anglia gets Dudgeon Deal

Dudgeon Offshore Wind Ltd has awarded the contract to build its onshore operations and maintenance (O&M) base to East Anglian construction company R G Carter. The company has been contracted to build the wind farm's new O&M base at Berth 9 located next to the River Yare within the Great Yarmouth port. Work commenced in early July 2015 and is scheduled to be completed during the second quarter of 2016. RG Carter have been contracted to convert an existing warehouse into Dudgeon's permanent office and logistics facility. Lerwick Port Donates to Shetland Stroke Support Group

Lerwick Port Authority’s Victoria Pier Car Park is having a special charity day on Saturday to coincide with the start of Living Lerwick’s Shopping Week. All proceeds from car park takings on Saturday 11 July will be match funded by Lerwick Port Authority and donated to Shetland Stroke Support Group. New Cruise Terminal at Abu Dhabi’s Port

The new cruise terminal at Zayed Port in Abu Dhabi, which will be capable of handling 2,500 passengers and three ships simultaneously, is set to become operational by the end of the year, according to a report in the National. Mohamed Juma Al Shamisi, the chief executive of Abu Dhabi Ports Company (ADPC) said that work was progressing in full swing and his company was aiming for an end-of-2015 finish to coincide with home porting plans of Royal Caribbean to base one of its Celebrity Cruise vessels at Zayed Port for the 2016-17 season. The ports developer is in talks with cruise lines to use Zayed Port as their home base for the next cruise season. The next cruise season will also involve a stopover at Sir Bani Yas Island.

Rotterdam Port Opens Secure Trailer Car Park

The Port of Rotterdam Authority has opened a second secure trailer car park on Theemsweg in the Botlekgebied, which enjoys a central location. There are 107 slots for loaded and empty trailers. The Theemsweg facility is a follow-up to the first dedicated trailer car park in the Waalhaven Zuid business park (eastern port area), where virtually all 71 parking spaces are let. The trailer car parks are also an ideal place for uncoupling. Trailer and cargo are kept behind a fence and monitored by CCTV. The car park can be accessed 24 hours a day. ADR trailers and traction vehicles may not use the facility for parking. By coupling/uncoupling trailers and chassis as needed, it is possible to respond more quickly to roadworks and congestion, optimise driving and waiting times and it is safer.

Port of Cork to Upgrade Cobh Cruise Terminal

The Port of Cork will invest over €1.5 million in upgrading facilities at Cobh Cruise Terminal, Ireland’s only dedicated cruise berth, with the installation of a number of high load mooring bollards at the east and west end of the Cobh Cruise Berth which will enable larger ships to be berthed. The work which will commence before the end of January is expected to be completed by April 2015 in time to welcome the first cruise call on 24th April. The High Court in Hong Kong has ruled in favour of extending the temporary injunction, but acknowledges the workers' right to strike. Sea Containers Announces Sale of Folkestone Port

Sea Containers Ltd., marine container lessor, passenger and freight transport operator and leisure industry investor, today announced that it had sold its subsidiary Folkestone Properties Ltd, owners of Folkestone Harbour on the south east coast of the United Kingdom. Contracts were signed for the port sale on July 2, 2004 and the purchase, by businessman Mr Roger De Haan who is well known as chairman of the Folkestone-based Saga Group, was completed on August 24, 2004. The sale price was $20 million (GBP11 million). President of Sea Containers Ltd., Mr James B. Sherwood, said the gain will be recorded in the company's third quarter results.

Ship Could be Stranded for Weeks

Port authorities are unable to predict how long it will take to refloat the 40,000 ton coal ship Pasha Bulker, stranded off a Newcastle beach, according to the West Australian. A Newcastle Port Corporation spokesman said the situation would be clearer once the 20-man salvage team, which spent its fifth day aboard the grounded bulk carrier, completed its detailed plan. Equipment to contain an oil spill was being moved from Newcastle port to a holding area in a carpark at Nobby's Beach, where it can be moved quickly in the event of a fuel leak from the ship, which has been wedged on a sandbar since Friday. The team has found a breach in the vessel's outer hull but a secondary inner hull remains intact.
