Antwerp Port Fire Creates Toxic Cloud

Toxic smoke from a massive smoldering fire has triggered an evacuation in the Port of Antwerp, local media reported.All vessels and business within 6,000 feet from the fire have been evacuated, RTL broadcaster reported.The authorities have reportedly urged the people who live nearby to keep their windows closed due to danger from the toxic smoke.According to RT, Firefighters are still battling the blaze, which produces “poisonous substances.”Some 5,000 tons of nickel sulfide caught fire in a warehouse of one of Europe’s largest seaports, the Port of Antwerp, on Saturday afternoon.Several firefighters' teams are working to contain the fire. Companies and vessels in a 1.8-kilometer perimeter were evacuated. Inland navigation and car traffic in the vicinity of the site have also been stopped.

Record Traffic in Port of Ystad

Port of Ystad saw record breaking traffic numbers in 2015, retaining the port’s position as Sweden’s third largest ferry passenger port. The largest increase was in bus traffic, which increased by 30,7 % compared to 2014. “The numbers from 2015 show that the traffic in Port of Ystad continues to grow, with the exception of railway waggons where we saw a minor decrease. The conventional goods as well as goods on trucks and trailers increased, making the total number higher than last years” says Björn Boström, CEO of Port of Ystad. The number of passengers increased by 1,5%. In total, 1 987 982 passengers chose to travel via the Port of Ystad. If this trend continues the port is looking to exceed two million passengers in 2016. Car traffic increased by 4 % compared to 2014.

Le Havre: Expansion of Ro-Ro Terminal

10% more traffic and new yard surface available. 2011 looks promising for the ro-ro terminal! At the end of August 2011, 245,600 vehicles had been handled on the terminal, an increase of 10% for the same period in the previous year. 10 additional hectares have been commissioned. The action taken by the GPMH together with the stakeholders in the ro-ro terminal is bearing fruit: ro-ro traffic in the Port of Le Havre has seen strong growth for the past two years. For the record, in August 2010, 223,240 new and second-hand vehicles were routed through the terminal, compared with 137,700 over the same period in 2009. Encouraging figures that confirm the need to expand the compound made available to ro-ro operators.

Port of Le Havre's Container Traffic Up by 5.7 Percent

The Port of Le Havre set a new record for general cargo in 2001 with 18 million metric tons (MT), an increase of 5.2 percent from 17.1 MT in 2000, according to preliminary traffic statistics. Overall traffic at the port rose to 69.5 MT from 68 MT in 2000. Within the general cargo category, container traffic showed robust growth to 14.6 MT, an increase of 5.7 percent over 2000's figure of 13.8 MT. The port handled around 1,525,000 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) in 2001, with transshipment accounting for 25.9 percent of this traffic, compared with 20.6 percent recorded in 2000. The Port of Le Havre’s increasing role as platform for transshipment of cars in Europe was confirmed by new car traffic moving through its Ro-Ro facilities (nearly 600,000 cars).

Austal Secures New Vehicle Ferry Order

Austal is pleased to announce a contract for a 67 metre high speed vehicle-passenger catamaran for Virtu Ferries of Malta adding to an already healthy order book for the West Australian shipbuilder. The new vessel is scheduled for delivery to Virtu Ferries in time for the European 2005 summer season and will have the capacity to carry 600 passengers and 65 cars or 95 lane metres of trucks plus 35 cars. Commenting on the contract Austal’s Managing Director, Mr Bob McKinnon said, “This latest order for a mid-sized car ferry is particularly pleasing in that it adds another important customer to our extensive list of clients. Established in 1988 Virtu Ferries operates fast ferry services between Malta and Sicily.

Blue Star Naxos

Blue Star Naxos is the third RoPax, which was constructed under Greek flag and delivered by DSME (Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering Co. Ltd.) in June 2002 in compliance with the requirements of BV. This vessel is the one of twins and the sister (Blue Star Paros) had been delivered just one and half month ahead of the vessel in April 2002. Classed by BV, the vessel has two car decks and two accommodation decks, while the upper garage deck level is divided into the fore half car space and the aft half crew cabins. This layout allowed the complete separation of the above passenger decks from the lower decks machinery noise and vibration.

Red Funnel Records Good Summer

Red Funnel has enjoyed a very successful August this year with growth in market share on the Southampton – East Cowes route. Figures show that Red Funnel has outperformed the market with significant growth compared to the same period in 2004. The total number of cars carried by Red Funnel during August (24 July – 20 August) grew by 9.35%, while the overall market grew by 4.47%. Year to date, Red Funnel’s car traffic is up by 7.74% in a market which has increased by just 2.47%. Red Funnel’s coach traffic has also outperformed the market, up 5.13% compared to market growth in August of 4.12%. Year to date, Red Funnel’s coach carryings are up 8.24% in a flat cross-Solent market.
