Mawai Shipyard Building New Multipurpose Carriers for COSCO

China''s Mawai Shipyard has started building the first in a series of 22 new multipurpose cargo carriers for COSCO Shipping Specialized Carriers (Southeast Asia) Pte. Ltd.The 85,000 DWT series vessel will measure 225 meters long with a breadth of 36 meters, a depth of 21.05 meters, a designed draft of 10 meters, and a designed speed of 15.5 knots.According to the construction plan, all 22 vessels in this series are scheduled for delivery between 2025 and 2026.The ships will primarily serve the export of Chinese manufacturing equipment in sectors such as automobiles…

Palmali Aims to Expand Shipping Ops in the Black Sea

Mitsubishi Christens Cargo-Passenger Ship

DSME WIns Order for Five Mega Ships

South Korean shipbuilder Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering has secured an order for five new container ships set for delivery next year. The contract is worth KRW 903.9 billion (about USD 762 million), DSME said in a stock exchange filing.DSME announced the order without naming the buyer. Mitsubishi Wins Order for Two Ferries

Mitsubishi Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., a group company of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) based in Yokohama, has received orders for two large, high-speed ferries from Shin Nihonkai Ferry Co., Ltd. The vessels will be constructed at the Tategami Main Plant of MHI's Nagasaki Shipyard & Machinery Works, scheduled for completion and delivery in 2021.The two ferries on order will be 222.5m long, 25m wide, 20.4m deep, with draft of 7.4m and gross tonnage of approximately 15,400. HMD Wins $138mln Order for 2 Car Carriers

South Korea-based company engaged in the production and sale of ships, Hyundai Mipo Dockyard Co (HMD) has won a 163 billion-won (US$138 million) order to build two car carrier ships.According to a stock exchange announcement from the Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) unit, HMD will build the vessels by March 2022 for  a European shipper. It declined to identify the buyer.This is the first ro-ro order of this year for HMD.According to Yonhap, HMD posted sales of 705 billion won in the first quarter of the year, with its operating profit reaching 26.1 billion won. It secured $434 million worth of orders for 11 vessels in the first quarter.HMD primarily builds medium-sized conventional ships and specialized vessels.

Meriaura Signs Five New TC Agreements

Finnish shipping company Meriaura has signed new time charter-in agreements covering five vessels.The five vessels that will join the company’s fleet include a deck cargo carrier, two multipurpose-heavy lift dry cargo vessels and two traditional dry bulk carriers said a press note from Meriaura, specializing in the transport of industrial raw materials and project cargo on the Baltic Sea and in Europe.M/S Enough Talk is a deck cargo carrier of the same type and size as Meriaura’s deck cargo carriers Aura and Meri. Mitsubishi Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., a Group company of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) based in Yokohama, held a christening and launch ceremony yesterday for Taiheiyo Ferry Co., Ltd's "Kitakami". The vessel will replace the old Kitakami, one of three large ferries providing regular service between the ports of Nagoya, Sendai, and Tomakomai (Hokkaido). By eliminating the large shared cabin, the new ship-carrying on the Kitakami name-will ensure passenger privacy and offer enhanced comfort features.

Cranes, Heavy Lift Shipping, Engineering and New Technologies

Compared to new technologies, conventional engineering in shipping is a relatively simple science: computable and generally predictable. However, heavy lift shipping presents challenges that go far beyond what is required with standard unitized cargoes. The transportation of project cargoes - often highly valuable components of multi-billion-dollar projects - requires expert planning to ensure they are loaded and transported safely and efficiently. Last year AAL shipped two giant cyclone vessels (22m x 11m x 10m and weighing over 500mt each) to Petronas’ $27 billion RAPID project in Malaysia.

China, Australia Ports Clogged as Coal, Ore Demand Soars

Around 300 ships caught in jam that would stretch 40 miles; freight rates for biggest coal, ore carrier hit 3-yr high. More than 300 large dry cargo ships are having to wait outside Chinese and Australian ports in a maritime traffic jam that spotlights bottlenecks in China's huge and global commodity supply chain as demand peaks this winter. With some vessels waiting to load coal and iron ore outside Australian ports for over a month, key charter rates have jumped to their highest in more than three years. Placed end-to-end, the total delayed fleet would stretch more than 40 miles, enough to span the English Channel from Dover to Calais and back.

New 800m Quay Planned in Portugal

Portugal’s Blue Atlantic has released new plans for an 800 meter quay to berth two Panamax vessels showcasing its maritime trade potential. The 96-hectare site for sale in one of Europe’s leading maritime industrial zones is being primed for maritime, ports and logistics investors targeting the Iberian Peninsula and mainland Europe. Blue Atlantic project lead Fernando Fernandes said it offers one of the fastest and most efficient routes in and out of Europe, bypassing the congested Mediterranean.

HullWiper Trial Program in Port Southampton

Trials are underway at Southampton as part of a pilot scheme to launch the eco-friendly HullWiper hull cleaning technology at the port. HullWiper is working to test the system on a range of vessels including cruise liners, Ro-Ro ships, container ships and general cargo carriers at the south coast port. Managing Director Simon Doran explains that the trials are to demonstrate the efficiency of the diver-and brush-free ROV to the harbour authority, Associated British Ports (ABP) in Southampton: “HullWiper provides an affordable, safe and eco-friendly alternative to traditional hull cleaning methods. HullWiper uses adjustable seawater jets under variable pressure as the cleaning medium, instead of brushes or abrasives, to minimise the risk of damage to expensive anti-fouling coatings.
