The Biden-Harris Administration has unveiled a $3 billion initiative to fund clean ports, aimed at reducing emissions and advancing environmental justice. Announced by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Clean Ports Program will support the transition to zero-emission operations at ports across the country.The program, part of President Biden’s Investing in America agenda, includes two grant competitions. Finnish manaufacturer of cargo-handling machinery Cargotec Oyj said that its subsidiary Kalmar has concluded an agreement with long-term customer EUROGATE Tanger in Morocco to upgrade the capabilities of four ZPMC ship-to-shore (STS) cranes.The order was booked in Cargotec's 2019 Q3 order intake, and the project is scheduled to commence in Q1 of 2020 and be completed in Q2 2021.The EUROGATE Tanger (EGT) container terminal is conveniently located on the Strait of Gibraltar in Morocco, making it the ideal transhipment hub for the western Mediterranean, Africa, as well as North and South America.With a quay length of 812 m, a terminal area of 400,000 m² and a water depth of up to 18 m, the facility is well-equipped to handle the new generation of container ships.

Finnish cargo-handling machinery giant Cargotec announced that its unit MacGregor, which provides solutions and services for handling marine cargoes, has completed the acquisition of the marine and offshore businesses of TTS Group ASA."MacGregor business area has completed the acquisition of the marine and offshore businesses of TTS Group ASA. Finnish cargo-handling machinery manufacturer Cargotec said it has reorganized the businesses under its Kalmar brand and has appointed Stefan Lampa as President of Kalmar Mobile Solutions, in a move aimed at enhancing Kalmar's growth opportunities.Kalmar, a provider of cargo handling solutions and services to ports, terminals, distribution centers and heavy industry, will be reorganized into three strategic business units: Kalmar Mobile Solutions, Kalmar Automation Solutions and Navis, effective April 1, 2019. Cargotec's financial reporting structure based on three business areas Kalmar, Hiab and MacGregor will remain unchanged.Lampa has been appointed President of Kalmar Mobile Solutions and a member of the Cargotec Executive Board.

Kalmar, part of Cargotec, has signed a Kalmar Care service agreement with Suomen Satamatekniikka, a subsidiary of Steveco, covering the maintenance and service of 16 Kalmar straddle carriers at the Port of Helsinki, Finland. The order was booked in Cargotec's 2017 fourth quarter order intake and the agreement comes into effect from the beginning of February 2018. Steveco, a leading port operator in Finland, employs approximately 850 people and has annual revenues of close to EUR 160 million. The company operates three ports in Finland - Mussalo and Hietanen in Kotka, and Vuosaari in Helsinki - which are optimally located with regard to the main cargo routes into and out of Finland and Russia.

Finnish cargo-handling machinery maker Cargotec announces savings measures in its subsidiary MacGregor to respond to the weakening market situation due to the low oil price and low number of new merchant ship orders. Cargotec is laying off some 220 employees globally at its MacGregor business. The countries where the impact of the planned measures is estimated to be biggest are Sweden, Singapore and Norway. "MacGregor is planning to reach savings by reviewing resourcing and making the necessary adjustments with a plan to reduce the use of external workforce and the number of own personnel. Simultaneously MacGregor continues to have a strong focus on the earlier announced development programmes to improve the internal effectiveness," says a press release from the company.

Container traffic through East Africa's biggest port of Mombasa grew by 11.9 percent in 2014, helped by its expanded capacity, a marketing drive, and new infrastructure built to shorten the turnaround time for ships, port management said on Wednesday. The Indian Ocean port is seen as a measure for economic activity in east Africa as it handles fuel, consumer goods and other imports for Uganda, Burundi, Rwanda, South Sudan, Democratic Republic of Congo and Somalia, and exports of tea and coffee from the region.

Maritime Safety Committee adopted the Code on Noise Levels on board Ships, Resolution MSC.337(91), commonly referred to as the Noise Code. The Noise Code is being made mandatory by means of Resolution MSC.338(91), which amends the SOLAS Convention to add new Regulation II-1/A-1/Reg. 3-12 – Protection against noise. The Port Newark Container Terminal (PNCT) will celebrate its official grand opening of the $175 million terminal redevelopment project at a ribbon-cutting ceremony tomorrow, September 26, 2002. The ceremony will begin at noon at the PNCT facility, located at 241 Calcutta Street in Port Newark, NJ. NYK Group company, held a get-together on board its 58,000-ton bulk carrier New Pride with guests from the Ishinomaki area in Miyagi prefecture to celebrate the installation of a new mechanical unloader (cargo handling machinery) at the port’s No. 7 Hiyori wharf and to pray for the further recovery and development of the port. Two of the port’s three unloaders toppled into the sea during the Great East Japan Earthquake and ensuing tsunami, and the port’s handling capacity had since been reduced significantly.

According to the EPA, the federal government is providing nearly $2 million in stimulus funds to control diesel pollution at the Port of Charleston. The grant is intended to provide jobs and help the state Ports Authority retrofit cargo handling and other diesel equipment at the port, the EPA said. Federal officials said the award includes support to clean up the engines on 36 pieces of cargo-handling machinery as well as improvements for two tugboats and a dredge.
