Singapore Conducts Oil Spill Exercise

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) conducted a multi-agency Joint Oil Spill Exercise (JOSE) yesterday (Friday) to test its abilities to respond to oil spills at sea. A mock collision and oil spill was staged in Singapore waters near Pulau Semakau in a response exercise.More than 250 personnel from 26 agencies participated in JOSE 2018 (please see Annex A for list of agencies), which comprised a table-top exercise at the MPA’s Port Operations Control Centre. During the exercise, agencies deliberated on operational and policy measures to deal with a major oil spill in Singapore waters, and a seaward deployment exercise scenario near Raffles reserved anchorage.The seaward deployment exercise scenario involved a simulated collision between two tanker vessels…

Aerial Drones Perform Tanker Survey

Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) survey and inspection firm Cyberhawk has completed the first full ABS Intermediate Hull Survey 4 on an oil tanker using UAVs.Cyberhawk performed full class inspection across 19 tanks on board an oil tanker while at a shipyard in Singapore. This included 12 Cargo Oil Tanks (COT), two slop tanks and five ballast tanks. Attending was the American Bureau for Shipping (ABS) to ensure the quality of the inspection complied with the specific ABS rules (ESP) set for tankers.

Hempel Debuts Offshore Assets Coating Range

Two new coatings, Hempadur Quattro XO 17820 and 17870, are being introduced to increase the service life and reduce on-station maintenance requirements of offshore assets by leading worldwide coatings supplier Hempel. The new high-performance pure epoxy uni-primers presented today (9 January), combine excellent corrosion protection with construction flexibility. Hempadur Quattro XO 17820 / 17870 are part of a series of two-component epoxy primer coatings which provide advanced crack resistance using Hempel’s patented fibre technology. They can be applied in immersed and non-immersed areas of any offshore asset, from offshore platforms and drilling rigs through to support vessels.

Great Ships of 2016: Milos

Since it started publishing in 1939, Maritime Reporter & Engineering News has recognized excellence in ship construction. Milos is the first vessel in a series of two Suezmax Crude Oil Tanker, built by SungDong Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering for Kyklades Maritime Corporation. The vessel is built under the survey of Lloyd’s Register and designed in accordance with IACS Common Structure Rule(CSR). The vessel features a double side skin and has a flush deck, bulbous bow, transom stern, open water type stern frame, semi-balanced rudder and single propeller driven by a slow speed diesel engine.

MPA Tests Joint Oil Spill Response Procedure

The multi-agency joint oil spill exercise was conducted today as part of an on-going effort to ensure our ports remain safe, secure and clean for the international shipping community. Code-named JOSE 2016, the exercise was organised by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) as part of the closing programme for the 19th Singapore International Bunkering Conference and Exhibition (SIBCON) 2016. Close to 80 delegates from SIBCON 2016 observed the oil and chemical spill exercise today. The ground deployment exercise will test the use of a new modern and efficient system, ‘NeatSweep’ to contain the spilled oil. Over 250 personnel from 28 agencies participated in the table top and seaward exercise that took place around the vicinity of Raffles Reserved Anchorage.

ClassNK Approves New Corrosion Resistant Steel

ClassNK has issued approval for Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corporation’s newly developed corrosion resistant steel (NSGP-2) for use on the upper deck and/or inner bottom of crude oil tanker cargo oil tanks (COT). Following earlier approvals of steels for the inner bottom plating of COTs, this marks the first time that approval has been granted for corrosion resistant steels for both the top and bottom parts of the COT, providing owners and shipyards with a practical alternative to coating systems. FPSO Trio Receives Side Shell Protection

SPS Overlay has yet again been used for side impact protection on three FPSOs for a major player in the offshore industry. The work was carried out at Enseada do Paraguaçu S.A. Shipyards (EEP) in Brazil and COSCO (Dalian) Shipyard, China. These projects were undertaken during the course of 2014, with the final project being completed in December 2014. ClassNK Registered Al Kout Delivered to KOTC

Leading classification society ClassNK announced that it has completed work on the 165,178GT VLCC Al Kout, built by Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co., Ltd. (DSME) as part of a series of vessels constructed for the Kuwait Oil Tanker Company S.A.K. (KOTC). The Al Kout was officially delivered to KOTC at a ceremony held at KOTC Head Office in Kuwait on 30 October 2014. The Al Kout is the final vessel of the four VLCCs and one Aframax Tanker constructed by DSME as part of this project under ClassNK Rules and Regulations and in line with KOTC’s strict standards on safety and environmental performance. The VLCC series is also the first in the ClassNK registry to comply with the Performance Standard for Protective Coatings (PSPC) requirements for Cargo Oil Tanks of Crude Oil Tankers.

Great Ships of 2013: Shuttle Tanker RIO 2016 for TEN

RIO 2016 is the first vessel in a series of two shuttle tanker in Brazilian water operation, designed by Sungdong Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering for Tsakos Energy Navigation Ltd., two companies with a long and good historic relationship. This vessel was chartered to Petroleo Brasileiro SA. The ship is built under the survey of DNV and designed in accordance with IACS common structure rule (CSR). The vessel has six pairs of cargo oil tanks, two slop tanks, fore and aft peak tanks, segregated water ballast tanks, fuel oil tanks and fresh water tanks.

Jotun Passes IMO PSPC for COT Tests

Jotun reports that it successfully completed testing of coating systems consistent with the new IMO PSPC rules for cargo oil tanks (COT), scheduled to come into force next year. The new IMO PSPC rules for cargo oil tanks (COT) will go into effect January 2013. ClassNK Type Approval for World First

ClassNK issued the world’s first class approval for an immersion testing system for coatings of the inner bottom of cargo oil tanks in line with the IMO’s Performance Standard for Protective Coatings (PSPC) for cargo oil tanks to the Japanese Paint Inspection and Testing Association (JPIA). ClassNK Issues Approval for Cargo Oil Tank Coating Testing System

First Standards for Application of Corrosion Resistant Steels

ClassNK has developed and released the world’s first set of standards for the application of corrosion resistant steels to the cargo oil tanks of oil tankers. The new Guidelines on Corrosion Resistant Steel for COT are the first guidelines to lay out clear requirements for the application of the new steels, whose use was approved by the IMO’s Maritime Safety Committee (MSC) earlier this year. The growing volume of crude oil carried by the world’s tanker fleet has led to rising concerns over pollution of the marine environment, and the last decade has brought tremendous changes to the building and survey requirements for oil tankers.

Industries Co., Ltd. For many years now, contracts for ships and floating units to operate in an offshore environment have been much-prized value-added goals at Samsung. These include not only shuttle but drill ships, floating storage and offloading units (FSOs), with their derivative production types (FPSOs), crane ships, and various types of floating and fixed platforms. Some of the more interesting ships that have been created here have included a trio of deepwater drill ships for Reading & Bates capable of working in water depths down to 3000m, the 312,500 dwt FPSO Bonga for operating off Nigeria, and the Saibos FDS, a pipelayer/crane vessel with a jib capacity of 600tonnes.

Keppel Wins S$100m Contracts

FPSO Umuroa has been delivered to Prosafe Production. Keppel Shipyard Ltd (Keppel Shipyard), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Keppel Offshore & Marine Limited (Keppel O&M), has been awarded two conversion contracts, worth a total of S$100 million, one by Prosafe Production Pte Ltd, and the other by Shipping Logistics Incorporated for a long term charter to Perenco S.A. The first contract awarded by Prosafe is for the conversion of a 101,832 dwt double-sided tanker, MT Kudam, into a Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) facility. Subic Shipyard & Engineering Inc (SSEI), an associate of Keppel Shipyard, will carry out the first phase of this FPSO conversion.

Japan: Advanced procedures sustain industry in turbulent markets

Japan retains its perch atop the world commercial shipbuilding heap, although its position grows increasingly precarious with the continued emphasis on shipbuilding market share by its Korean competitors, and the emergence of low-cost, hungry start-ups in China and the former Eastern bloc nations. The challenges facing the Japanese shipbuilders and ship equipment suppliers are not unlike those faced by its European counterparts during much of the past decade. While Japan's strong suit continues to be its ability to mass produce tankers and bulk carriers in a very efficient and profitable manner, its technical prowess and continually refined manufacturing procedures can only take it so far in what continues to be a labor intensive process.

Harad

Harad is the first in a four-ship double-hulled series of VLCCs constructed for Hellespont of Greece by the South Korean builder Samsung Heavy Industries. During construction, the four vessels were re-sold to NSCSA of Saudi Arabia. The vessel, which incorporates a number of technical features to ensure high levels of environmental protection and high performance, holds a large main engine, improved strength by increased plate thickness, improved service lifetime for coatings by increased paint specification and advanced inert gas system. The hull form of the vessel has been specifically remolded to meet Hellespont's requirements and differs from the conventional VLCCs, featuring a 'blunt' fore part and a breadth of 190 ft. (58 m) to reduce hull deflection.
