Stolt Tankers Buys Tanker Pair for Caribbean Trade

Stolt Tankers acquired two 15,000 dwt stainless steel chemical tankers built in 2018 and 2019 respectively. The ships will be named Stolt Condor and Stolt Tucan, joining Stolt Tankers’ Inter-Caribbean service (SNICS) improving Stolt Tankers’ service offering and capability for customers in the US Gulf and Caribbean markets. Hamburg Süd Christens Polar Ecuador

Hamburg Süd christened the Polar Ecuador containership in Antwerp.The new vessel belongs to a group of four structurally identical vessels in the Polar class that have been built for Hamburg Süd by the Chinese shipyard Jiangsu New Yangzi Shipbuilding. Hamburg Süd christened the “Polar Mexico” container ship in the Mexican port of Veracruz on the weekend.The sponsor of the “Polar Mexico” is Claudia Dávila, wife of Carlos Ayala, Logistics and Distribution Director of Alpek Polyester, which is a subsidiary of the Alfa Group, one of the largest corporate groups in Mexico.The Mexican economy is strong in the fruit sector as well as in other industries with high import and export volumes, such as automobile manufacturing, chemicals and brewing.

CMA CGM Opts for DP World London Gateway

CMA CGM’s European Caribbean Service is to begin calling at DP World London Gateway Port following enhancements to the rotation. It means that this particular service will be calling in the UK for the first time on Friday, January 6. Dedicated to reefer transport, the service will provide one of the shortest transit times on the market between Central America and North Europe. It also enables the UK to connect with the whole of the Caribbean region through CMA CGM’s strategic hub in Kingston, Jamaica. The new ECS rotation will be: Puerto Limon, Kingston, Rotterdam, DP World London Gateway, Hamburg, Antwerp, Le Havre, Caucedo, Kingston, Santo Tomas de Castilla, Puerto Cortes and Puerto Limon.

Carnival Corp. to Launch Four New Ships in 2016

Carnival Corporation & plc will launch four new ships in 2016 across four of its global cruise brands. These additions are part of the 17 ships scheduled for delivery for Carnival Corporation’s 10 brands through 2020. “As we execute our fleet enhancement plan – which includes a long-term strategy for bringing highly efficient, state-of-the-art ships to market and elevating the overall cruise experience, we are excited about seeing these new ships come to life this year,” said Arnold Donald, CEO of Carnival Corporation.

Hamburg Süd Chooses EUROGATE

Hamburg Süd shipping line has awarded the contract for handling its new EMCS – Europe-Mexico/Caribbean Service to EUROGATE Container Terminal Hamburg. The first ship will berth at the terminal on 13 November 2014. The regular service links Northern Europe with Central America and is scheduled to call at Hamburg on a weekly basis. Hamburg Süd is operating the service with six container vessels each with a nominal capacity of 2,500 TEUs. The Hamburg Süd ships will call at eight ports along their route. A round trip from Marin/Pontevedra (Spain) via Antwerp, London and Hamburg to Altamira, Veracruz, Puerto Limon, Cartagena (Colombia) and back takes 42 days. “A reliable transport chain is of the utmost importance to us in ensuring our customers receive their goods speedily and punctually.

DP World London Gateway Attracting New Container Shippers

As Britain’s new hub port celebrates its first birthday DP World London Gateway has expanded its network of shipping links and destinations, attracting a series of new deep-sea container shipping services. Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) has confirmed that from next month (December), its service from South Africa to UK/Northwest Europe will make a direct London Gateway call, switching from the Port of Felixstowe. The new rotation will offer the best possible UK port coverage, MSC has told shippers.

Sea Star Line Announces Commercial Leadership Changes

Sea Star Line, LLC announced today that Bill Taylor will assume leadership of Sea Star’s United States sales team as Vice President, US Sales. CMA CGM Service Resumes Through Haiti

Having been involved in the relief effort since the earthquake struck Haiti, the CMA CGM Group announced that it has resumed a regular service between Port-au-Prince and Kingston in Jamaica. On February 7th, a 516 teu capacity CMA CGM feeder vessel made a call to Port-au-Prince as an extension of its Europe-Caribbean Service (ECS). A second call was made on February 15th thanks to the 400-ft long floating dock that has recently been installed at the Haiti Terminal. On February 11th CMA CGM was also back in business with the reopening of the VITAL Agency, its Port-au-Prince representative. This regular service via Kingston, a major Caribbean transhipment hub, offers an alternative solution for all commodities coming from and going to Port-au-Prince.

Klenck Appointed as Crowley’s Vice President of Pricing and Yield Management

Joel Klenck has been promoted to vice president, pricing and yield management with overall pricing responsibilities for Crowley Liner Services’ Puerto Rico/Caribbean Group. Based in Jacksonville, Fla., Klenck will report to John Douglass, senior vice president and general manager. Klenck joined Crowley as a marketing analyst in February 1999. He was later promoted to manager, yield management, and then to manager of Puerto Rico pricing. Klenck served most recently as director, pricing and yield management, for the Puerto Rico and Caribbean service. The pricing and yield management department focuses on expanding Crowley’s revenue base, analyzing cost variables, and reducing company expenses.

MOL Establishes New Panama Vessel Operation Center

MOL hosted a party to celebrate the grand opening of its new Panama Vessel Operation Center in Panama City, Panama on December 9, 2003. Some of the guests in attendance included: Mr. Joaquin Jacome, Minister of Commerce; Mr. Jerry Salazar, Minister of Canal Affairs; and Mr. Shuji Shimokoji, Ambassador of Japan. Considering Panama to be one of the world’s key maritime centers, the company established MOL (Panama) Inc. in May 2003, which is responsible for handling all commercial activities for MOL’s liner division in Panama. The responsibilities of MOL (Panama) Inc. were increased last month when it was named a regional office in charge of managing the activities of MOL’s Caribbean and Central America shipping agents.

Dr. Tamara Jernigan To Serve As Carnival Pride Godmother

Mediterranean Shipping Company Announces New Carribean Service

Mediterranean Shipping Company (USA) Inc. (MSC)has commenced a new weekly service in the Caribbean with the sailing of the MSC CARIBS out of Miami, Florida to Freeport, Bahamas. The company is serving Rio Haina, Dominican Republic, Kingston, Jamaica and Port au Prince, Haiti on a dedicated weekly basis via Freeport. The MSC vessel, MSC Bahamas, will be used in rotation linking Miami and Freeport with these three Caribbean destinations. Nichols Brothers Boatbuilders are building a highspeed catamaran ferry for San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation district. Designed by International Catamaran Designs (INCAT) of Sydney Australia, this will be Nichols Brothers 27th U.S. built highspeed catamaran. The vessel will be 139 ft. overall with a 34-ft. beam and draft of 9 ft. The individual hulls will have a beam of 9 ft.. A 37-knot speed is predicted with four 16-cylinder Cummins KTA50-M2 main engines delivering 1,600 hp each at 1800 rpm. Each IMO emission certified engine will drive a Hamilton model 571 water jet through a ZF Marine BU 460D marine gear. Electrical service will be provided by a 125 kW generator set powered by a Cummins Marine 6CT8.3DM engine.

Cosgrove Awarded Thomas Crowley Trophy

Cole Cosgrove, director of contract operations for Crowley’s Puerto Rico and Caribbean Services, was awarded the 2001 Thomas Crowley Trophy, Crowley Maritime Corporation’s highest honor, at ceremonies held last week in Jacksonville. Cosgrove, who is based in Jacksonville and works for the corporation’s liner services segment, is the second trophy winner this year. Craig Tornga, general manager of Oil Industry Services for Crowley in Alaska, received the first trophy presented in late May. Tornga is a member of Crowley’s Energy and Marine Services group. The Thomas Crowley Trophy honors employees with outstanding performance, whose dedication, leadership, initiative and productivity most clearly reflect those of the company’s founder.

Crowley Introduces Bigger, Faster Ships in Caribbean Service

Crowley Maritime Corporation's liner services group is enhancing its Caribbean islands service beginning next week with the addition of two new, bigger, faster container ships - the Eclips and Ocean. Each ship offers about 200 more TEUs of capacity and twice the number of reefer plugs - about 160 - than the Sea Gale and Sea Cloud, the ships they are replacing. Running at about 18.5 knots, the new ships are about two knots faster, which should result in even better transit times and schedule integrity. "These new ships will benefit our customers in a number of ways," said Rudy Leming, Crowley's vice president of Caribbean islands services.

CLIA: Cruise Fleet Growth Continues

The Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) -- the organization tasked with helping the world's cruise lines promote their ships -- reported cruise shipping fleet growth in 2002/03. In a year-end report the organization noted that 14 new vessels -- as well as three re-launched ships and several others introduced in late 2002 but having their inaugural sailing seasons in the new year -- will make 2003 another record year in the cruise industry. Bora Bora Cruises: The 226-foot, 2,677-ton, Tia Moana and Tu Moana are scheduled to begin sailing in the South Pacific in June. The ships are designed to sail to the heart of the Tahitian lagoons. Carnival Cruise Lines: The 110,000-ton, 2,974-passenger Carnival Glory launches year-round seven-day Caribbean service from Port Canaveral July 19.

Technical development in ships has been tremendous during the past 10 years. New technology has been introduced faster than ever before in the shipbuilding history. The new stricter rules have been the generator for many new solutions, but especially the total economical, conceptual approach has made it possible to introduce new systems, equipment and arrangements into a typically conservative market. Investments are considered on basis of lifetime cycle costs, but taking into account also possible additional revenues. The issue is to maximize the efficient revenue generating space at minimized investment and running costs, but taking into account availability and environmental impacts as well.
