GE Powers Diadema Cruise Ship

Fincantieri shipyard to equip in-board propulsion for Carnival and Costa vessels, GE’s Power Conversion business has helped the shipyard successfully deliver the Costa Diadema cruise ship to the Carnival Corporation on October 28, 2014. Constructed at the Marghera Shipyards near Venice, Italy, the cruise ship, 306-meters in length and 132,500 gross tonnage in weight, has the capacity to carry up to 5,000 passengers. The Costa Diadema cruise ship benefits from GE’s latest technology and vast experience from the cruise industry. GE’s capability to meet customers’ demanding requirements has supported this valuable relationship with the Carnival Corporation for more than 10 years.

Confounding the skeptics who said the 70,300-gt Queen Elizabeth 2 would be the last transatlantic liner ever built, the 150,000-gt Queen Mary 2 is set to make her service debut in January 2004, signifying a $780-million investment in a luxury passenger ship structurally engineered for the North Atlantic. Destined to uphold and revitalize the Cunard liner tradition, the 30-knot QM2 will break new ground in passenger ship technology, while incorporating lessons learned with the 1969-commissioned QE2. Marine Propulsion:Emission-Reduction Test a Success

New emission reduction technology was recently proven in a joint test with Holland America and RINA. The test was conducted aboard Veendam. Pictured is sistership Zaandam. Reduced emissions from diesel engines at sea has become a rallying cry from legislators to ship owners to diesel engine manufacturers to fuel and additive suppliers. Last month a significant milestone in the fight to reduce emissions was achieved, as emission-reduction technology reportedly been tested successfully on Carnival's Holland America (HAL) ship, Veendam. The tests were carried out jointly by Carnival Corporate Shipbuilding, HAL and RINA within a common R&D project. The technology is based on injecting water into fuel to create micro-droplets of emulsified fuel.
