U.S. Coast Guard Calls Off Search for 35-Year-Old Who Fell from Carnival Magic Cruise Ship

The U.S. Coast Guard on Wednesday suspended the search for a missing 35-year-old man who went overboard from a cruise ship 186 miles east of Jacksonville, Florida.Coast Guard crews searched more than 5,171 square miles and 60 hours. Shipbuilding; Carnival Celebration floated out at Meyer Turku in Finland

The 185,000-gt cruis ships Carnival Celebration was floated out to the outfitting keel at Meyer Turku shipyard in Finland, with the LNG-powered ship marking the culmination of Carnival Cruise Lines 50th birthday. Trump Says Carnival Offers Ships for Medical Use

Shipbuilding: Meyer Turku Growth Continues

Meyer Turku Group reported a turnover of €969.7 million for 2018, up from €808.2 million the year prior. The Finnish shipbuilder, which recorded €29 million in profits for 2018, said its financial figures indicate a good, steady company growth.“We are on a good path to meet the goals we have set,” said Meyer Turku CEO, Jan Meyer. “We need to, however, double our production in the next four years to meet the demands in our order book.”In 2018 Meyer Turku delivered one ship, New Mein Schiff 1, to German TUI Cruises, and New Mein Schiff 2 was handed over to the same owner in January 2019.

Klein Named Carnival Maritime MD

Carnival Maritime GmbH has announced  that Dr Hermann J. Klein has been appointed as its new Managing Director, starting September 1st, 2018. Klein is currently Managing Director and Group COO of CPO Holding (Offen Group) in Hamburg, Germany. He will be succeeding Lars Ljoen, who will join Carnival Cruise Lines in Miami, USA, as Head of Marine Operations. ABB’s Azipods Ordered for 100th Cruise Ship

Azipod propulsion, the ABB technology that has become the industry standard in the cruise segment since its launch in 1990, has secured its 100th cruise ship order, winning a contract for powering the world’s first electric hybrid icebreaker. The luxury polar expedition cruise ship, due delivery for the French cruise company PONANT in 2021, will feature two Azipod VI propulsion units fit for the most challenging ice conditions. Upon delivery from Norway’s Vard Søviknes, a Fincantieri Company, the cruise ship will take passengers to unexplored destinations in Arctic and Antarctic waters.

Grand Bahama Shipyard and L&R Midland (UK) Ltd have signed an exclusive agency agreement covering the U.K. markets effective June 1, 2017. Caribbean shipyard Grand Bahama Shipyard (GBS) has engaged L&R Midland (UK) as its representative in the U.K. in what is expected to be an increasingly busy period due to approaching new International Maritime Organization (IMO) regulations that will require ballast water treatment systems (BWTS) and exhaust gas cleaning systems (EGCS) retrofits.

Great Ships of 2016: Carnival Vista

Carnival Vista is the new flagship of the fleet of Carnival Cruise Line, brand of the Carnival Group, delivered from Fincantieri’s shipyard in Monfalcone. Europa 2 Set for Maiden Voyage to New Orleans

More than 500 cruise passengers aboard Europa 2 will spend a few days in New Orleans next week, as the luxury cruise ship makes her maiden voyage to the Port of New Orleans Julia Street Cruise Terminal Monday, where port officials will host an onboard ceremonial plaque exchange with the vessel’s captain. “New Orleans consistently ranks atop the world’s top destinations for visitors and cruise lines see the Port of New Orleans as an attractive call on their itineraries,” said Gary LaGrange, Port President and CEO.

Yard Improvements at Grand Bahama Shipyard

Grand Bahama Shipyard Limited (GBSL), a shipyard in the Caribbean, said it had a productive summer program consisting of work on vessels from the tanker, container and towage segments of the maritime industry. Additionally, renovations and upgrades were performed on the floating dry docks and workshops, all in conjunction with yard improvements in anticipation for a busy fall and winter work period. Carnival Orders Two Ships from Meyer Turku

Meyer Turku (Finland) has signed a memorandum of agreement with the world’s largest cruise ship operator Carnival Corporation & plc for two new, 180 000 GT, cruise ships. The Ships will be built for Carnival Cruise Lines with delivery dates expected in 2020 and 2022. With the same agreement, Carnival Corporation & plc also orders one 180 000 GT cruise ship from Meyer Werft (Germany) for P&O Cruises, to be delivered in 2020. Bristol Harbor Group Announces Two New Hires

Bristol Harbor Group, Inc. (BHGI) announced the addition of naval architect Zachary Gilfus and mechanical engineer Marissa Stutzman to its naval architecture and marine engineering practice. Gilfus is the most recent addition to BHGI, joining the team at the end of August as a naval architect and marine engineer. Gilfus graduated this past spring from Webb Institute with a Bachelor’s of Science in naval architecture and marine engineering. During his time at Webb, Gilfus interned at four different companies including Carnival Cruise Lines and General Dynamics NASSCO.

Long Beach Port Celebrates Environmental Successes

Shipping lines, environmental organizations, trucking companies, terminal operators and a railroad were honored today, July 29, by Long Beach Mayor Dr. Robert Garcia and the Port of Long Beach at the annual Environmental Achievement Awards. The awards are an outgrowth of the groundbreaking Green Port Policy, the Port’s commitment to improving the environment. Approved in 2005 by the Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners, the policy put the Port on the path to become a world leader in environmental stewardship. At today’s event, Mayor Garcia introduced the “Mayor’s Green Port Award,” which was presented to terminal operator Long Beach Container Terminal.

Carnival Bans Bringing Bottled Water Onboard

Carnival Cruise Lines will stop passengers from bringing bottled water, bottled soda and other bottled nonalcoholic drinks onboard, effective July 9. Carnival's Liquor and Beverage Consumption Policy Guest has long prohibited guests from bringing alcoholic beverages onboard. But one can still carry on up to 12 unopened cans or cartons of water, soda and non-alcoholic beverages per person during embarkation, the cruise line said in a statement. The line released the new policy today in a letter sent to travel agents and booked passengers. Signs will be posted at embarkation ports, and Carnival will update its website to reflect the change. The company cites delays in the boarding process as one reason why they are enacting the new policy.

Damen Performs Cruise Ship Maintenance

The 46,052 GRT cruise ship Magellan has recently completed a five-week scheduled maintenance stopover at Damen Shiprepair Amsterdam. For two of the weeks, the 222-meter vessel was positioned in the yard’s 250-meter no.4 dry dock where the hull, rudders and propellers underwent a thorough inspection and cleaning. Originally built for Carnival Cruise Lines in 1985 and named Holiday, Magellan is now part of the Global Maritime Group Inc. and has recently joined the fleet of the British operator Cruise & Maritime Voyages (CMV).
