Five Rescued from Capsized Boat off Carolina Beach, NC

Coast Guard and partner agencies rescued five people Saturday from a capsized vessel about three miles off the coast of Carolina Beach. Sector North Carolina watchstanders in Wilmington received a mayday call at approximately 7:30 a.m. requesting help. -A C-130 Hercules aircraft crew and MH-60 Jayhawk Helicopter crew from Air Station Elizabeth City. -A 45-foot Response Boat-Medium (RBM) crew from Station Wrightsville Beach. -A 29-foot Response Boat-Small (RBS) crew from Station Oak Island. -16-foot skiff from Kure Beach Fire and Rescue. -A vehicle and jet ski from Carolina Beach Fire Department. The helicopter crew discovered a capsized 20-foot boat about three miles offshore at approximately 9:50 a.m.

New legislation expands scope of NOAA marine debris program to deal with natural disaster debris. President Obama has signed legislation reauthorizing the NOAA Marine Debris Program and its mission to address the harmful impacts of marine debris on the United States. The program, which is housed within NOAA’s Office of Response and Restoration, was originally created in 2006 by the Marine Debris Research, Prevention, and Reduction Act. New USACE Contract

Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Co., Inc., Oak Brook, Ill., was awarded on Nov. 23, 2009 a $20,143,303 firm-fixed-price contract for the beach re-nourishment for Carolina Beach, Kure Beach, and Ocean Isle Beach and maintenance dredging of Masonboro Intel and Sand Bypassing, Brunswick County, N. C.  Work is to be performed in Brunswick County, N.C., with an estimated completion date of Apr. 30, 2010.  Bids were solicited on the World Wide Web with two bids received.  U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Savannah District, Wilmington, N.C., is the contracting activity (W912HN-10-C-0005).
