Techcross Reports 'Surging' BWMS Orders

South Korean ballast water management systems (BWMS) manufacturer Techcross said orders for its systems are "soaring" in line with the improvements in the global shipbuilding market. ABS to Class STL's New Very Large Ethane Carriers

Maritime classification society ABS will class four new 98,000 cbm Very Large Ethane Carriers (VLECs) ordered by China's Zhejiang Satellite Petrochemical (STL)These ethane-fueled VLECs are part of a Phase-2 order from STL and South Korea's Samsung Heavy Industries and Hyundai Heavy Industries will build two VLECs each.ABS, which was the classification society of choice for the first order of the six dedicated VLECs by Reliance Industries in 2014, says that these 87,000 cbm VLECs have been successfully trading and laid the foundation for the next generation of larger VLECs.

AEC Collaborates with ABS for ULEC

MOL, COSCO Pact on LNG, Ethane Projects

Japanese shipping company Mitsui O.S.K. Portugal’s Naval Rocha Shipyard Reports Robust Activity

Portugal’s Naval Rocha shipyard is reporting a surge in activity in the opening half of 2018 after delivering a series of drydock, wet basin and pier-side projects.Naval Rocha commercial director Sergio Rodrigues said the yard located in the heart of Lisbon Harbour on the north bank of the River Tagus has completed a wide variety of repair and conversion projects.Key work has involved containers, cruise, passenger and sailing ships, cargo and research survey vessels, naval ships, anchor handing tugs, supply vessels and dredgers.“Naval Rocha is a unique, modern shipyard,” said Mr Rodrigues. “We are located in a prime position in the centre of a European capital city which enjoys 300 days of sunshine a year.

STX Shipbuilding Stages Strike

The trade union workers of South Korea's STX Offshore & Shipbuilding Co. said Sunday they will stage a strike starting this week to protest the company's self-rescue plan, reports Yonhap. According to Korean media reports, the union would organize the strike action this week to express its disagreement with the company's planned restructuring program as it does not guarantee workers’ jobs. Starting today (Monday) 8:00 a.m., the union said 700 workers will walk out and called on the company to scrap the planned layoff of workers. "We will carry out a full strike for the time being, and hold protests and rallies to have the people become aware of unfairness surrounding the planned layoff," a union official said.

MOL to Restructure Organization

The Japanese shipping company  Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd (MOL) will restructure its organization effective April 1, says a press statement from the company. MOL is establishing the Product Transport Business Unit, under which much of the carrier and port divisions will reside. It has also submitted an application to establish a logistics subsidiary in India. The company will establish the Product Transport Business Unit to create the cross-sectional system “One MOL” to promote businesses in the product transport field and further meet customer needs. Largest All-Electric Pipe Bender Starts Operations at Newport News Shipbuilding

Unison has commissioned what is believed to be the largest all-electric tube bending machine ever produced. The machine has started operations at Newport News Shipbuilding, supplier of nuclear-powered aircraft carriers and submarines to the US Navy. The machine is capable of generating over 265,000 lb-ft (360,000 Nm) of torque and can bend piping up to 8 inches NPS - with an outside diameter of 8.625 inches or 219.1 mm - with Schedule 80 wall thicknesses of 0.5 inch (12.7 mm). The availability of all-electric, servomotor-controlled bending machines for pipes of this size brings significant productivity benefits to the fabrication of a ship's pipework compared with conventional hydraulically-powered machinery.

Deltamarin Wins Contract for SUL Bulk Carrier

Deltamarin has signed an agreement with Chengxi Shipyard Co., LTD about the design of a SUL (Self Unloading) Panamax Bulk Carrier to be built for CSL International Inc. Deltamarin will take care of the basic and detail design of the vessel as well as the procurement support. The vessel is a derivative of Deltamarin’s revolutionary B.delta standard bulker designs with improved cubic capacity and markedly lower fuel consumption compared to competing designs. The ship concept for this new generation of SUL bulk carriers has been created by Deltamarin for CSL International previously. The good cooperation between the ship owner and Deltamarin resulted in many improvements to current designs of SUL bulk carriers.
