DNV Confirms Energy Efficiency Gains for LNG Carries with DFE+ Propulsion

New Dual Fuel, Electric+ (DFE+) concept, developed by ABB and MAN Energy Solutions, has been recognized by DNV as a more energy efficient alternative to current conventional designs for liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers.DNV has quantified the gains that owners of LNG carriers could expect to achieve using the new DFE+ solution and found that it could help LNG carriers boost energy efficiency by up to 7.5%, therefore enabling greater emissions reduction.The number takes into account the smaller machinery space requirements with ‘a conservative estimate’ of 5% greater cargo capacity…

K-Line Names Newly-Built LNGC For Jera “Enshu Maru”

Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (“K” Line) and Tokyo Century Corporation held the naming ceremony for the newly-built liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier for JERA Co at Sakaide Shipyard of Kawasaki Heavy Industries (KHI).The new vessel was given her name “Enshu Maru” by Chairman of the Board of Directors Akihisa Mizuno of Chubu Electric Power Co., Inc. “Enshu Maru” comes from the name of an old district in western Shizuoka Prefecture named “Tohtoumi” which is part of the service area of Chubu Electric Power Co., Inc.Under the operation of LNG Marine Transport Ltd., “Enshu Maru” will mainly serve the transportation route between Freeport LNG project in United States and Japan after delivery…

New LNG Bunker Fuel Technical & Safety NGO Formed

The Society For Gas as a Marine Fuel (SGMF) is launched as new Non-Governmental Organisation to enhance safety and best practices in the use of LNG as a ship fuel. Following a decision to proceed by the Board of Directors of the Society of International Gas Tanker and Terminal Operators (SIGTTO) at its spring meeting in Houston, the Society for Gas as a Marine Fuel (SGMF) is to be established as a new non-governmental organisation (NGO). “The use of LNG as a marine fuel presents a major challenge for the shipping industry over the coming years,” states Luc Gillet, SIGTTO President. “I am pleased that SIGTTO is playing a leading role in the launch of this new NGO.

Currently, the world is moving toward more environmentally friendly, or “green,” technologies with a focus on reducing emissions and finding more efficient sources of energy. Traditional marine diesel propulsion relies on the combustion of finite sources of energy and is ultimately an inefficient generator of electrical power and also creates harmful emissions.

MAN B&W Launches Engines, Targets LNG

MAN B&W Diesel A/S launched the ME-GI engine, a range designed for the highly specialized LNG carrier market. The design builds on experience gained from the earlier MC-GI engines combined with the developments in the latest electronically controlled ME engines. The manufacturer is touting the combination of low installation and running costs for this highly specialised type of vessel makes the adoption of the dual fuel ME-GI engine from MAN B&W very attractive for owners and operators. An additional reliquefaction plant allows sale of more gas when the gas price is higher than the fuel oil price. “The LNG carrier market, like all sectors of the transportation industry, needs to control and, where possible, reduce operational expenses, while securing sound profit.

News: MAN B&W Debuts ME-GI Dual Fuel Engine

MAN B&W Diesel A/S launched the ME-GI engine, a range designed for the LNG carrier market. The ME-GI design combines with the developments in the latest electronically controlled ME engines. "The LNG carrier market, like all sectors of the transportation industry, needs to control and, where possible, reduce operational expenses, while securing sound profit. We see many new opportunities in this area for cost-down solutions permitted by the increased flexibility and greater control with the ME-GI engine," Vice President of Two-Stroke Sales, Ole Grøne, said. Traditionally, LNG carriers have been driven by steam turbines that are fed from boilers fired by the boil off gas, supported by heavy fuel oil.

BV Approval for Rolls-Royce

Bureau Veritas has awarded basic concept approval (approval in principal) to the Rolls-Royce MT30 gas turbine power station for LNG carrier propulsion in conjunction with electric drive. The MT30, producing 36MW, is an aero-derived gas turbine which has eighty per cent commonality with the well-known Rolls-Royce Trent 800 aero engine which has been in service for ten years powering the Boeing 777 aircraft. Compact and reliable, gas turbine power is the next step forward for the propulsion of LNG carriers. The approval in principal was issued by Bureau Veritas after a review of the technical documentation submitted by Rolls-Royce. It is the first stage of the overall assessment of the gas turbine power station, which will ultimately be formalised by full concept approval.
