Coast Guard, Navy Rescue Injured Crewman
Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Guam command center received notification at 11:40 a.m. Sunday of an injured crewmember aboard the merchant vessel Tenso approximately 362 miles east of Guam. The Liberian-flagged cargo ship Tenso requested a medical evacuation for a 39-year-old male crewmember who suffered lacerations to the neck and head. U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Assateague rendezvous with the vessel at 10 a.m. Monday and transferred a medical corpsman aboard to evaluate the condition of the injured crewmember.
Vessel Owner Fined for Illegally Manning U.S. Flagged Vessels
Coast Guard Sector Guam has levied fines against the South Pacific Tuna Corporation for eight separate violations of Title 46 United States Code, Section 8304 for using unlicensed foreign personnel to illegally fill the roles of chief mate and chief engineer on U.S. flagged vessels. Crewmembers from Sector Guam determined in March 2012 that the violations had taken place on five of the company’s 14 purse seine vessels while conducting dockside vessel safety examinations in Pohnpei, Federated States of Micronesia. The safety examinations are required by specific legislation for the U.S.
Hazmat Transported from Shipwreck for Proper Disposal
By Jesse Leon Guerrero, U.S. The U.S. Navy, in partnership with the U.S. Coast Guard and civilian contractors, safely removed 49 55-gallon drums filled with hazardous materials from the grounded Japanese commercial fishing vessel Daiki Maru 7 at the Spanish Steps on Naval Base Guam (NBG) March 6. The Navy-led unified command consisting of representatives from the base, U.S. Coast Guard Sector Guam, Guam Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the responsible party have worked together daily to secure the site and coordinate removal of the hazardous waste since the vessel ran aground Feb. 13.
