Caterpillar to Power Stena Line's New RoPax Ferries

Caterpillar Marine has announced Cat power solutions have been selected to power four 3100 LM RoPax Ferries for Stena Line. Each ferry will be equipped with two MaK 12 M 43 C propulsion engines. “By combining a set of proven technologies Caterpillar’s solution will provide Stena Line the most fuel efficient ferries in the world and will set a new industry standard when it comes to operational performance, emissions and cost competitiveness, positioning Stena Line to support its customers in the next decades,” said Ulf Hannemann, cruise and ferry segment manager at Caterpillar Marine.

Shanghai Office Moves to Caterpillar Marine Center

Caterpillar Marine Asia Pacific, the regional headquarters of Caterpillar Marine Power Systems in Shanghai, P. R. China, have moved to a new office at Yan’an West Road. This is also the location of the marine group of Lei Shing Hong Machinery Ltd., Caterpillar’s marine dealer for Eastern China. Together both entities now reside in the Caterpillar Marine Center building. Caterpillar Marine Asia Pacific’s regional headquarters are on the 25th floor, the top floor of the building, offering some 900 square metres of office space. Lei Shing Hong Machinery’s marine team is just one floor below.

Caterpillar Marine has completed the acquisition of ESRG Technologies Group, LLC, a vessel monitoring and data analytics company in the marine industry. Caterpillar Acquires ESRG Technologies Group

Caterpillar Marine has announced  it has completed the acquisition of ESRG Technologies Group, LLC, a vessel monitoring and data analytics leader in the marine industry. The acquisition includes ESRG’s comprehensive software suite for the remote monitoring and diagnostics of more than 65 on-board systems as well as the expertise to provide meaningful recommendations to ship owners to help increase efficiency, reduce downtime on their vessels and assist shipyards in reducing warranty expenses.

Caterpillar Marine Systems Doubles Parts Warranty

Caterpillar Marine Power Systems says it has increased the warranty on Cat Brand Parts used in all marine applications from six months to one year. The warranty covers all parts used in Cat marine engines, Cat marine generator sets, Cat branded marine control systems and Cat marine transmissions. The extended coverage applies to all parts sold or utilized in service work on or after June 1, 2012. The suppliers say that there will be no additional cost to customers for this significant extension of warranty protection.

Caterpillar Completes 1st Dual Fuel Engine Retrofit

Caterpillar Marine successfully completed the commercial marine industry’s first dual fuel engine retrofit conversion in hull. Performed in under six weeks, Caterpillar Marine along with Cat dealer Bolier, completed an in hull retrofit onboard the Coral Anthelia, an Anthony Veder LNG carrier vessel. The MaK™ M 43 C diesel engine was retrofitted to the 6 cylinder M 46 dual fuel platform, with each cylinder offering 900 kW of rated power. As a result of performing the retrofit within the hull, no modifications had to be done to the ship’s structure and no docking was required.

Caterpillar Offer 3500C Tier 3 Marine Power Solutions

Caterpillar Marine Power Systems is pleased to announce starting in January 2012, the legendary Cat 3500C marine engines will enter full production meeting United States EPA Tier 3 regulations. Cat 3500C Tier 3 compliant offerings will include propulsion, auxiliary and diesel electric propulsion (DEP) engines. All Cat 3500C offerings will not require after treatment modules to meet Tier 3 regulations as a result of incorporating innovative fuel and air system modifications into the design of the engines. “We’re pleased to offer our customers impacted by the United States EPA regulations a timely, comprehensive power solution that doesn’t require after treatment or sacrifice performance,” said Bob Hallengren, Caterpillar Marine Power Systems Product and Application Manager.

Caterpillar to Deliver Highest Horsepower Tier 4 Solution

Edison Chouest Offshore has selected Caterpillar Marine's Cat Tier 4 Final C280-16 generator sets for two new vessels, Caterpillar announced today. The generators are the marine industry's highest horsepower Tier 4 solution, as well as one of the largest diesel electric propulsion (DEP) configurations in company history. Four Cat C280-16 generator sets, each rated at 5060 bkW @ 900rpm will power each vessel, which are being constructed at Edison Chouest’s La Ship shipyard in Houma, Louisiana.

First Cat Marine Hybrid Thruster Delivered

Engineering specialists at Caterpillar Marine’s new Marine Solutions Center are overseeing delivery of the first Cat Marine Hybrid Thruster system, being delivered this month to an undisclosed shipyard in Singapore and will be commissioned midyear. Caterpillar Marine said the new propulsion setup outperforms diesel mechanical systems in all partial load conditions, and offers improved fuel economy and substantial through-life savings for a variety of offshore support vessels (OSV).

Caterpillar Secures Complete Propulsion Systems Order

Caterpillar Marine announced that Cat power and propulsion solutions have been selected to provide an optimized tug package for a 55T ASD tug new build for Remolcadores Marracoi SL (REMARSL). Two Cat 3512C EPA Tier 2 propulsion engines have been selected to power the tug as well as 2x  MTA 523FP Azimuth thrusters. Each Cat 3512C marine propulsion engine will provide 2x1765 kw @1800 rpm of rated power. Auxiliary power will be delivered through 2 x Cat C9 engines. The vessel will be constructed at Freinaval shipyards in Spain. Cat dealer Finanzauto led Caterpillar efforts on the project. Completing the comprehensive Caterpillar efforts on the sale was Cat Financial, who was able to deliver a stellar financial package for the customer.

Caterpillar Marine and Cat Dealer Pon Power announced the first Cat 3512C marine generator sets with Dynamic Gas Blending (DGB) have been selected to power Assessoria Transporte Aquaviaro fast ferries for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. A total of 28 Cat generator sets will be installed on seven aluminum-hull fast ferries, with 14x Cat 3512 generator sets and 14x Cat 9 generator sets providing prime and auxiliary power. Each 3512 generator set will provide 1,550 eKW at 60 Hz of rated power.

Caterpillar Marine has shipped Cat® C8.7 supercharged diesel engines. The electronically-controlled C8.7 is capable of delivering an impressive 650 MHP @ 2300 RPM while meeting EPA Tier 3, IMO 2, EU Stage IIIA and RCD emissions requirements. In addition to internal validation activities, the C8.7 recently completed field testing on three sportfish yachts, ranging from 48 to 55 feet, accumulating over 7500 hours. Customers can order the C8.7 from the global Cat dealer network.

As she entered the Hamburg, Germany, harbor on February 9, 2010, AIDA Cruises’s newest addition to the fleet, AIDAblu sailed right past the Caterpillar Marine Power Systems headquarters on the historic Elbe River. The AIDAblu represents the fourth ship in a series of seven AIDA club ships powered by MaK engines. The 827-ft Sphinx-class series cruise ship has a passenger capacity of 2,192 over 14 decks. These 4x MaK 9 M 43 C engines in a diesel-electric configuration will provide 36,000 kW (48,960 bhp) for both main propulsion and electric power to the main switchboard.

Caterpillar Launches Electronic Generator Set

Caterpillar Marine will launch the Cat C4.4 ACERT generator set for commercial vessels at the 2014 SMM Exhibition, held September 9 -12 in Hamburg, Germany. Designed to provide essential, nonessential or emergency power across a wide range of commercial platforms, the new C4.4 ACERT is a fully-electronic power solution delivering improved transient response and better load acceptance. The C4.4 ACERT offers rated power of 65 – 99 ekW at 50 Hz and 60 – 118 ekW at 60 Hz. The new platform will be available to order from the global Cat dealer network in September 2014.

CAT Unveils Uprated C175 Marine Engine at SMM

Caterpillar Marine says it is due to unveil new power ratings for the Cat C175 propulsion engine for commercial vessels at the 2014 SMM Exhibition, currently underway in Hamburg, Germany. Designed specifically as a high speed power solution for commercial applications including ocean going and harbor tugs, the C175-16 propulsion engine is now available with ratings of 2239 bkW - 2550 bkW @ 1800 rpm. The new ratings extend Caterpillar Marine’s high-speed engine power range beyond the company’s already industry-leading 3516C HD engine.

Cat Unveils MaK M 25 E Platform

Caterpillar Marine launched the MaK M 25 E engine platform at SMM, an engine platform developed for state-of-the-art vessel designs with an emphasis on fuel savings. Key product features include optimized engine performance as well as an efficient part load range, which the manufacturer boasts can help to save up to 40 tons of fuel a year when operating vessels at variable engine speeds. Vessels typically operating at lower loads can save up to 60 tons of fuel per year by changing the operating mode from constant to variable engine speed.

MaK, Caterpillar to Partner DNV GL for Condition Based Monitoring

MaK together with Caterpillar’s Marine Asset Intelligence organization has announced that they have partnered with DNV GL to help make the change from time based maintenance to condition based maintenance by leveraging the predictive analytics of Cat Asset Intelligence in accordance with DNV GL’s Survey Arrangement Machinery Condition Monitoring (CM) requirements. The Survey Arrangement of DNV GL recognizes, across multiple dimensions, the value that an industry leading condition based monitoring system such as Cat Asset Intelligence provides to ship owners.

Caterpillar to Launch Re-Manufactured Popular Marine Engines

Caterpillar Marine is to launch the Cat Reman 3116, 3126 and 3126B propulsion engines for yachts at the 2014 Miami International Boat Show. Re-manufactured using only 100% Caterpillar re-manufactured or genuine new parts, the economical Cat Reman engines will enter production in summer 2014. Caterpillar explain that these propulsion engines will be available in ratings of 304 - 456 mhp and are ideal for pleasure craft as well as fishing vessels. Tanker Retrofitted with Dual Fuel Engine

Caterpillar Marine informs it has begin a dual fuel engine retrofit conversion onboard the 472-foot Fure West tanker, owned by Furetank Rederi A/B. The MaK M 43 C diesel engine onboard the tanker will be retrofitted in hull to the seven-cylinder M 46 dual fuel platform, with each cylinder offering 900 kW of rated power. Additionally, Caterpillar is also supplying the complete gas system for the tanker, including bunker stations, two LNG tanks measuring 4.15 meters by 24 meters and the vaporizer.

Caterpillar Marine Asset Intelligence has announced a new project with maintenance management specialist SpecTec focused on optimizing ship maintenance. This joint accomplishment aims to reduce ship maintenance costs by enabling unnecessary maintenance to be deferred for shipboard equipment that is operating properly and identifying potential issues for action before a failure negatively impacts operations.
