ECOSHIELD Rudder Protection Launched

After more than 10 years of testing, Subsea Industries, a Hydrex company, has launched the rudder protection coating, Ecoshield, for permanent protection against cavitation damage for rudders. The glassflake reinforced coating protects the rudder for the service life of the ship without need for recoating or major repair and comes with a ten-year guarantee. Ecoshield is also suitable for bulbous bow, stabilizer fins, thruster nozzles and other underwater ship gear which needs special protection from corrosion. Until now, the problem of cavitation damage to rudders, causing erosion, pitting and sometimes complete failure, Hydrex said, necessitating very expensive repairs or replacement has remained unsolved.

Damaged Hull Coating Cause of Cutter Corrosion

The U.S. Coast Guard's Engineering Analysis Board has identified factors associated with corrosion on the Coast Guard’s National Security Cutter 'Stratton'. The Engineering Analysis Board concluded that the unusual pattern of corrosion observed on the Stratton was caused by Damage to the hull coating, caused by below-the-waterline welding, coupled with a cathodic protection system that was operating in an “underprotect” configuration contributed to the corrosion on Stratton’s hull. Additionally, stray current corrosion from the welding was also identified as a contributing factor.

Austal USA: Corrosion Management Solution

Austal USA and their U.S. Navy partners have worked closely to achieve a comprehensive corrosion management solution for the Independence-variant Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) class. Impressed current cathodic protection systems, already in place on the Westpac Express, an Austal-built civilian vessel that has served the U.S. Marine Corps for the past decade, are set to be tested over the coming months on the Independence-variant Littoral Combat Ships and ultimately, put into place on the Jackson (LCS 6). Passive measures are important as well, and the Coronado (LCS 4) will get new anti-corrosion surface treatments to better protect the water jet tunnels and associated structure from galvanic corrosion.

Cathelco, UMC Complete 1st Project

The first joint venture project between Cathelco and UMC International has been completed at the Yonderberry fuelling jetty at Torpoint in Plymouth. Earlier this year, the two companies created an alliance enabling the specialist diving services of UMC International to be used for the installation and maintenance of corrosion protection systems supplied by Cathelco. The Yonderberry jetty project, commissioned by Babcock, has involved installing a new sacrificial anode system that will protect the steel piles of the north and south ‘dolphins’ used for mooring vessels during refuelling.

Keppel Sells Cathodic Protection Technology

The Directors of Keppel Corporation Limited (Keppel) announced the sale of 100 percent stake in Cathodic Protection Technology Pte Ltd (CP Tech) by Keppel Integrated Engineering to the management team at CP Tech for a total cash consideration of S$3.9 million. CP Tech is one of the largest providers of cathodic protection systems in the Asia-Pacific region. The divestment is in line with Keppel’s strategy of disposing its non-core assets. The divestment is not expected to have any significant impact on the net tangible assets and earnings per share of Keppel for the financial year ending December 31.
