Ivory Coast's Cocoa Bean Stocks Pile Up as Port Deliveries and Exports Slow

Credit: Photoagriculture/AdobeStock

Deliveries of cocoa beans to Ivory Coast's two main ports have slowed in recent weeks as an energy crisis hit industries in the world's top cocoa-growing nation, exporters and cocoa cooperative officials said on Thursday.A lack of shipping containers due to the pandemic has also contributed to the slowdown, forcing Ivory Coast's cocoa regulator, the Cocoa and Coffee Council (CCC), to limit the issuance of documents that clear bean deliveries at ports for shipment. This has caused a stockpile of more than 80…

IMO: Cargo Safety Matters

The classification of certain potentially hazardous cargoes is on the agenda of the International Maritime Organization (IMO)'s Sub-Committee on Carriage of Cargoes and Containers (CCC 5, 10-14 September). The Sub-Committee will consider a newly identified phenomenon which affects some bauxite cargoes, known as dynamic separation, which can cause instability of the cargo and ship. Also up for discussion is carriage of ammonium-nitrate based fertilizer. Potential problems have been identified following accidents involving the MV Purple Beach (2015) and MV Cheshire (2017).The recommendations arising from the investigation into the MV Cheshire will be presented to the Sub-Committee.

Warning on Hazards of Carrying Bauxite by Ship

A new warning that bauxite may become unstable when carried in bulk on a ship, potentially causing the vessel to capsize, has been issued by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). Bauxite is one of the world’s major sources of aluminium with around 100 million tonnes transported annually by sea. In 2015, a bulk carrier sank while transporting bauxite, with the loss of 18 seafarers. Research presented this week to an IMO Sub-Committee found that certain forms of bauxite with a large proportion of smaller particles could be subject to a newly-identified phenomenon of “dynamic separation” when there is excess moisture in the cargo.

Hazards of Bauxite on Cargoes

New research considered by International Maritime Organization (IMO) this week about the behaviour of an aluminium ore that featured in a high-profile shipping casualty in 2015 could lead to changes in industry rules about how such cargoes should be handled. IMO’s Sub-Committee on Carriage of Cargoes and Containers (CCC 4, 11-15 September) this week is considering the latest research results on the potential instability of bauxite when carried as a ship’s cargo. Bauxite is one of the world’s major sources of aluminium. In 2015, a bulk carrier sank while transporting bauxite - with the loss of 18 seafarers. IMO has been investigating the hazards and risks associated with the carriage of bauxite.

Rickmers 9M Revenue Slips

Hamburg, 11 November 2016 – In the first nine months of 2016, the Rickmers Group generated consolidated revenues of € 373.6 million. This represents a decline of 15 percent versus the previous year’s period (€ 439.7 million). This fall is due mainly to the persistently strained market situation through the expiry of further high-margin charter contracts, temporary fleet idleness and follow-on charters at current low market rates. Furthermore, lower revenues from freight and a stronger fall in capacity utilisation in the project cargo area also had a negative impact. As a specific consequence of this revenue decline, the operating result before interest…

ABTO Warns of Liquefaction Problems at Terminals

The Association of Bulk Terminal Operators has warned that cargo liquefaction – an issue commonly associated with the seaborne transportation of unprocessed mineral ores and concentrates – is also an issue which bulk terminals need to pay attention to. Speaking at the ICHCA ISP76 panel meeting in London last week, ABTO chief executive Ian Adams, said: “The liquefaction of bulk commodities is a serious issue which can and should be managed effectively shoreside. However, allowing ship’s crews access to stock piles to assess solid bulk commodities such as Bauxite and nickel ore is not the answer in view of the fact that stock piles have been known to collapse.

In the first half of 2016 the Rickmers Group generated consolidated revenues of €249.3 million ($279 mln), 13.9 percent lower than in the corresponding period in 2015 (€289.6 million, $324 mln). The main underlying factors are the persistently strained market situation, expiring high-margin charter contracts, follow-on charters at the prevalent low market rates, lower freight earnings, and a sharper decline in capacity utilization in the project cargo business. The Group’s operating result before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) saw a clear fall of 36.1 per cent to € 87.7 million ($98.2 mln)  (H1 2015: € 137.4 million) ($153.87 mln )…

LR Alert: Liquefaction Dangers for Carriage of Bauxite

The IMO’s Carriage of Cargo and Containers (CCC) Sub-Committee has published circular CCC.1/Circ.2 on Carriage of Bauxite that may Liquefy. the Master is presented with an assessment that the cargo does not present Group A properties. This advice follows findings from the Bulk Jupiter accident investigation, which have triggered the re-assessment of the cargo. The conclusions of this re-assessment will be included in future amendments to the IMSBC Code. Currently, bauxite is assessed as a Group C cargo (cargoes not liable to liquefaction) under the Code. Lloyd's Register, the UK P&I Club, and Intercargo have produced a pocket guide for ships' officers and agents who arrange cargoes for loading.

Major Ivorian Cocoa Buyers Boycott Local Exporters Scheme

Major cocoa buyers are boycotting a scheme in Ivory Coast aimed at guaranteeing local firms a share of the lucrative export market, arguing that these players lack the expertise and financing to ensure reliable deliveries. A 2011 reform of the cocoa sector in Ivory Coast, the world's largest producer, specified that a significant share of the annual crop should be allocated to local companies for export, in a bid to develop the domestic industry. This season, the Coffee and Cocoa Council (CCC) regulator awarded contracts to local exporters for the delivery of 150,000 tonnes of cocoa, from an estimated total crop of 1.7 million tonnes. The CCC uses a messaging system to pair up international firms seeking cocoa with local exporters who handle the shipment.

Logistics and Warehouse Insurance: Understanding its Complexity

Virginia Cameron

In October 2013, a fire blazed through Brazil’s Santos port, destroying six warehouses and the 180,000 tons of raw sugar inside Sugar Company Copersucar’s terminal. The fire hit all of the sugar giant’s warehouses at the port and left many exporters holding contracts for sugar with an empty bag. Following the fire, Copersucar declared “force majeure” to third party exporters who had contracts to ship the sugar through the now-burned terminal. Force majeure is a legal term referring…

Drop in Cocoa Bean Size Worries Ivorian Exporters

Dry weather in top cocoa grower Ivory Coast has caused a sharp drop in bean size and will delay the start of the April-to-September mid-crop by nearly two months, exporters and merchants said on Friday. Bean size is determined by counting the number of beans per 100 grammes of cocoa, known as the bean count. Ivory Coast's marketing board, the Coffee and Cocoa Council (CCC), has fixed a ceiling of 105 beans per 100 grammes for beans destined for export. Average bean counts have increased from 100 to 105 beans per 100 grammes to 120 to 130 beans per 100 grammes over the past several weeks. Bean size generally decreases during the mid-crop and the bulk of the harvest is typically purchased by local grinders who process them into cocoa products.
