Dark Cloud of Offshore Storage Looms

Glencore books the STI Grace tanker to store fuel at sea-traders. This has not been the summer many oil traders had expected after last year's bumper profits. Banking on more of the same, the world's refineries have churned out more diesel, gasoline and jet fuel than eager drivers and holiday makers have been able to consume even over the summer travel season. Fuel inventories in the United States, Europe and Asia are brimming despite the height of peak summer driving. European traders are now moving to store diesel on tankers at sea as on shore storage tests its limits yet again. At least one vessel, the 90,000 tonne STI Grace has dropped anchor off the chic holiday town of Southwold on England's east coast in what traders said was floating storage. The vessel was chartered by Glencore.

The Vessel Sharing Agreement (VSA) is a common practice in the shipping industry that allows entities to share space in each other's vessels. An official statement said that the Corporate Affairs Ministry is expected to soon issue a notification with regard to exempting VSAs from the ambit of Competition Commission of India (CCI). 'Buy' Rating Reiterated For Cruise Shares

Shares of cruise stocks, Carnival Corp. and Royal Caribbean Ltd., have traded down recently, with a sharp pullback following the recent release of the Consumer Confidence Survey. However, in a report released last week, researchers Lazard Frères & Co. said the shares are nearing an oversold level, representing an excellent buying opportunity, and reiterated their "buy" rating for both Carnival and Royal Caribbean. The Consumer Confidence Survey is a five-question survey that measures the level of confidence that individual households have in the performance of the economy. A composite index is created based on the responses. The source for the dip, the report says, was that the Consumer Confidence Index for September shows a sequential decline from August levels.

Year's End Appears To Be Timely For Buying Cruise Shares

Now is the time to buy cruise shares, says a cruise industry review released by Lazard Frères & Co., which notes that although shares have been up and down in the past few weeks with only a 1 percent increase in the last month, the relatively defensive performance of the cruise/leisure segment is encouraging. The report states cruise shares are sensitive to any data showing a slowdown in consumer spending in 2000. In September, a decrease in the Consumer Confidence Index was enough to cause a 7-8 percent drop in Carnival and Royal Caribbean shares. However, a closer look showed a tendency of the CCI to soften in autumn months. At 134.2, the CCI is 6 percent higher than a year ago, actually suggesting stronger confidence among consumers.
