DNV, SDTR Marine to Explore CCS for Kamsarmax Bulker
Classification society DNV has entered into a joint development project (JDP) with Singapore-based shipping company SDTR Marine to cooperate on a carbon capture and storage (CCS) feasibility study for the latter’s 85,000 dwt Kamsarmax bulk carrier.As part of the JDP, DNV and SDTR Marine will collaborate on a techno-economic analysis of CCS implementation aboard the bulk carriers. Utilizing DNV's FuelPath, the study aims to evaluate the economic viability of different fuel and technology approaches under various fuel and CO2 price scenarios.

Classification society Lloyd’s Register (LR) has granted approval in principle (AIP) for Value Maritime’s carbon capture and storage (CCS) system. The Filtree System – a prefabricated gas cleaning system that filters sulphur and 99% of particulate matter – will be fitted on two Eastern Pacific Shipping (EPS) MR tankers, significantly reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.The CCS system includes a carbon capture module that captures the CO2 in a special chemical. Shell Advances Peterhead Clean Energy Project
Shell has signed an agreement with the U.K. Government to progress the Peterhead Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) project to the next phase of design. The project, led by Shell, with strategic support from SSE, owners of the Peterhead gas power station in Aberdeenshire, aims to capture10 million metric tons of CO2 over 10 years. This will generate enough clean electricity to power the equivalent of 500,000 homes a year. If successful, the project will represent the first industrial-scale application of CCS technology at a gas power station anywhere in the world.
Open Hearing on Mongstad Carbon Projects
Statoil will be present today for the first day of the Storting's open hearing regarding the state's handling of the carbon projects at Mongstad. The objective of the hearing is to review the recommendations and problems described in the report of the Office of the Auditor General of Norway on last autumns' investigation into the way the Norwegian state has dealt with the question of carbon capture and storage (CCS). Canadian Government Supports Shell CCS Project
Shell announced on Friday that it had signed agreements with the Governments of Alberta and Canada to secure $865 million in funding for its Quest Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) Project. The Quest Project will capture and permanently store deep underground more than one million tons of carbon dioxide per year from Shell’s Scotford Upgrader near Edmonton, Alberta, which processes heavy oil from the Athabasca oil sands. “Quest would be the first application of CCS technology for an oil sands upgrading operation,” says John Abbott, Shell’s Executive Vice President of Heavy Oil. Shell aims to improve its oil sands environmental performance through carbon dioxide reduction, improved water management and minimal impacts of tailings ponds.
New Report on Norwegian Energy Policy
Norway is pursuing ambitious, forward-thinking energy policies, but could go further in its efforts to become a low-carbon economy, the International Energy Agency (IEA) has concluded in a review published today. Energy Policies of IEA Countries - Norway 2011 Review says that it will be challenging for Norway to meet its 2020 target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 30% compared with 1990 levels, because both the country’s electricity supply and its energy use in buildings are already essentially carbon-free due to hydropower use.
