The UK Hydrographic Office (UKHO) has officially handed over marine geospatial data to the Guyanese Government after a campaign of hydrographic surveying.Delegates from the UKHO presented the data to government officials at a special event to celebrate the completion of the survey. Two workshops were held to brief ministers and provide technical support for applications of the data, which will help Guyana support the development of its marine economy.The data, which was collected over a period of four months between 2016 and 2017, will initially be used to update nautical charts of the Demerara River. Cleaning up the wastewater stream on marine vessels isn’t just about removing hydrocarbons out of oily separators and bilges. Workboat galleys harbor a tremendous amount of FOGs (fats, oils and grease) that, if not properly disposed of, can be a health risk, damage equipment and add to overall operational costs. Even if vessels are equipped with sophisticated grease trap systems, the introduction of nontoxic, neutral pH biologic compounds into the trap and/or waste stream is a necessary step to reduce toxic buildup and environmental pollution.

The fact that improperly-treated gray water pollution is still being dumped off ships in a so-called modern and highly-regulated shipping industry is hypocritical at best. Graywater – which comes from ship accommodation areas (shower/sink), laundry, galley and food pulper – can contain classical pollutants such as nonylphenols, metals, nutrients, surfactants, pathogens, oil, grease, detergent and soap residue. Graywater is sometimes mixed with sewage, depending on the ship design. Graywater can have varying levels of harmful contaminants.

The first true three-dimensional picture of submarine canyon habitats has been produced using a combination of marine robotics and ship-based measurements. The information captured in this new set of maps ranges in scale from the 200km canyon down to the size of an individual cold-water coral polyp, and will be used to inform the management of the only English Marine Conservation Zone in deep water. This ‘nested map’ is the result of a recent scientific expedition to the Whittard Canyon in the Bay of Biscay, led by the National Oceanography Centre (NOC).

The RV Cefas Endeavour has commenced an 18-day charter to the Government of the Netherlands organizations Rijkswaterstaat (RWS) and the Institute for Marine Resources & Ecosystem Studies (IMARES), with local mobilization in Scheveningen (Netherlands). The 74-meter multidisciplinary research vessel will participate in International Bottom Trawl Survey (IBTS) operations in the North Sea, in collaboration with vessels from other European agencies, under the auspices of the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES).

New research tracking the movement of dredged sediment around Liverpool Bay could save millions of pounds in dredging costs. Each year, sediment must be dredged from the port and deposited elsewhere to maintain access for commercial vessels. But according to the new study by scientists at the National Oceanography Center in Liverpool, the dredged material appears back in the port again within just a few weeks of its removal, carried by sea currents. The team used computer models to predict the movement of a particle of dredged material once it had been deposited in the bay. “It's just like the computer models they use to predict the weather,” said Dr. Alex Souza of the Natural Environment Research Council’s (NERC) National Oceanography Centre.

The Glosten Associates, Inc. announced it has been awarded a contract from the U.K.–based Energy Technologies Institute (ETI) for the engineering phase of the floating offshore wind turbine demonstrator using the PelaStar tension leg platform (TLP) foundation system. The $6 million (U.S.), 12-month contract will complete the Front End Engineering Design (FEED) in advance of construction and deployment of a 6 MW demonstration unit off the south coast of the U.K. as early as 2015.

UK Government agency Cefas signs major contract with EAOW for Round 3 North Sea windfarm metocean data delivery. The contract is with East Anglia Offshore Wind Ltd (EAOW) to provide metocean data that will support the development of the East Anglia Zone in the North Sea. (EAOW is a joint venture owned 50:50 by ScottishPower Renewables and Vattenfall, and has been created for the development of the East Anglia Zone.)  It is estimated that the 7.2 GW zone has the potential to meet the equivalent electricity needs of 4.6 million homes.

The International Association of Dredging Companies presented its Best Paper Award for a Young Author for the 28th time at the CEDA Dredging Days 12-13 December 2012 in Abu Dhabi, to Mr. Arnaud Verschelde for his paper ‘Erosion Behaviour of a Draghead’. Mr. Arnaud Verschelde graduated from the Delft University of Technology ‘Faculty of 3mE’ (Mechanical, Maritime and Materials Engineering). He is presently a Project Engineer Automation at DEME (Dredging, Environmental and Marine Engineering). The erosion behaviour of a draghead designed in-house at DEME was investigated.
