Grounded Bulker Refloated off Oman

A bulk cement carrier that ran aground off beaches of Al-Fazayah Beach, Salalah in Oman has been refloated in one piece and without no damage to the environment, said the company behind the salvage operation, Resolve Marine Group.The partially loaded vessel, RAYSUTT II, departed Port of Salalah in May of last year when the port was evacuated due to adverse weather conditions. Dual Fueled Cement Carrier Christened

The christening and launch of the 8,000 deadweight, dual fueled cement carrier M/V Shetland took place  at the Ferus Smit yard in Westerbroek.M.V. Shetland is the third dedicated cement carrier built for JT Cement AS, a joint venture between KGJ Cement, NovaAlgoma Cement Carriers Ltd and Erik Thun AB. Shetland is a sister vessel of the M/V Ireland and M/V Greenland.The vessel is equipped with an LNG fuelled propulsion system. "This unique design incorporates a 200 m3 pressurised LNG tank positioned in the foreship," it said in a press release.While sailing on LNG, the vessel will meet the most stringent emission criteria, as well as new norms that might be in place in futures for environmental sensitive areas…

Ferus Smit Launches Arklow Wind

Dutch shipbuilder Ferus Smit successfully launched ‘Arklow Wind’ at the Ferus Smit yard in Leer."M.V. Arklow Wind is the second vessel in a series of 4 that will be delivered to our client from the city of Arklow, Ireland," said a press release.By design, Arklow Wind (which will sail under the Irish Flag) is an enlarged version of the 8500 DWT ships that we have delivered to Arklow Shipping in the past.In comparison with these vessels, Arklow Wind has almost twice the carrying capacity of 16500 DWT. She is equipped with a 3840kW main engine in order to achieve low fuel consumption.Meanwhile, Ferus Smit informed that it  will launch M.V. ‘Shetland’ at the Ferus Smit Westerbroek Yard on 11th of April.M.V.

Disabled Freighter Towed into New York Harbor

The U.S. Coast Guard coordinated the tow of a disabled 611-foot freighter into the port of New York and New Jersey after it lost propulsion over 100 miles offshore in the Atlantic Ocean on Tuesday, August 21.At around 9 p.m. on Tuesday, watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector New York received a report that the Panama-flagged bulk carrier GDF Suez North Sea with 21 crew aboard, was disabled. India to Flag Off Cargo Via NW 2 on River Brahmaputra

Nitin Gadkari, Indian Union Minister of Shipping will flag off the first movement of cement cargo through National Waterway (NW) 2 on River Brahmaputra in Assam today,  under the Shipping Ministry’s flagship programme Sagarmala. He will also lay the foundation stone for bank protection work of Majuli Island tomorrow. Assam Chief minister Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, will also be present on the occasion. Marking a new milestone towards Government of India’s constant endeavors to promote economically more viable and environment friendly modes of transport in the country, two barges of 200 metric ton capacity each, will carry 400 tonnes of cement from the Inland Waterways Authority of India’s Pandu Port to Dhubri covering a distance of 255 kilometers.

Great Ships of 2016: Greenland

Since it started publishing in 1939, Maritime Reporter & Engineering News has recognized excellence in ship construction. Dutch shipbuilder Ferus Smit delivered what it is calling the world’s first LNG-powered cement tanker, MV Greenland. The delivery was preceded by an extensive program of trials and tests in which the proper working and safety of all systems was verified. On December 23, MV Greenland left the harbor of Delfzijl on its first commercial voyage to Rostock where it was scheduled to receive its first cement load. M.V.

Second LNG-powered Cement Carrier Delivered

Dutch shipbuilder Ferus Smit has delivered the second LNG-powered cement carrier, MV Ireland, to owners JT Cement, a joint venture between Swedish shipping company Erik Thun AB and Norway’s KG Jebsen Cement. MV Ireland, along with sister vessel MV Greenland delivered in December 2015, are the first ever dry cargo vessels with an LNG fuelled propulsion system and LNG tanks integrated inside the hull, the builder said. The newbuild’s design incorporates a pressurized LNG tank positioned in the foreship.

Finally on Wednesday, December 23,  MV Greenland left the harbor of Delfzijl on her first commercial voyage to Rostock where she will receive her first cement load. M.V. Greenland is a dedicated cement carrier build for the joint venture JT cement, in which Erik Thun AB cooperates with KG Jebsen Cement from Norway.

LNG Cement Carrier Greenland Ready for Launching

LNG-powered M.V. Greenland, a dedicated cement carrier, will be launched on October 31 at Ferus Smit Westerbroek Yard in the Netherlands. The vessel will be one of the first ever dry cargo vessels with an LNG fuelled propulsion system. This unique design incorporates a pressurised LNG tank positioned in the foreship. M.V. Greenland is a dedicated cement carrier build for the joint venture JT cement, in which Erik Thun AB  cooperates with KG Jebsen Cement from Norway. While sailing on LNG, the vessel will meet the most stringent emission criteria, as well as new norms that might be in place in futures for environmental sensitive areas. The cement cargo system will consist of a fully automated cement loading and unloading system, based on fluidization of cement by means of compressed air.

Nine Missing From Sunken Cargo Ship in Batangas

Philippines Coast Guard search and rescue teams are searching for nine missing crewmembers from the cargo vessel M/V Sea Merchant which sunk approximately five nautical miles southeast of Malabrigo Point in Lobo, Batangas at around 6:45 a.m. January 1. The missing crewmembers reportedly boarded a life raft, while 11 other crewmembers were rescued by the passing M/T Mactan Island after it has received the distress signal from the sinking vessel. M/V Sea Merchant was carrying 20,040 bags of cement to Antique from Bauan Port where it loaded 16,000 liters of diesel oil. Lakes Water Levels Return, but Not Full Loads

The rise in Great Lakes water levels has yet to translate into full loads for the U.S.-flag freighters moving iron ore, coal, limestone, cement and other cargos. Vessels continue to routinely leave port with less than a full load on board. The largest iron ore cargo moved by a U.S.-flag laker through the Soo Locks in June totaled 69,576 tons. The record iron ore cargo for the “Head-of-the-Lakes Trade” is 72,300 tons and was carried in 1997, a period of near record-high water levels. The deepest draft ever recorded for a transit of the Poe Lock is 29’ 03” in 1986.

Cape Flattery Still Aground, Cargo Removal Suspended

(Honolulu) Operations to remove portions of the cement cargo from the Cape Flattery, which is aground near the entrance of Barbers Point Harbor, were suspended Sunday afternoon because of unsafe sea conditions. The Unified Command continues to monitor the efforts to safely remove the Cape Flattery. Prior to suspending operations, salvage crews were able to remove approximately 30 percent of the granular cement necessary to refloat the vessel. Offloading operations will continue when weather conditions permit. The local crane and barge companies assisting with offloading operations are currently moored at Barbers Point Harbor. During routine soundings Sunday, the ship's crew discovered sea water in one of the empty fuel tanks.

Capre Flattery Rrefloated

The U.S. Coast Guard issued a Press Release stating that the bulk carrier CAPE FLATTERY has been refloated off the reef near Barbers Point, Hawaii. The salvage effort required removal of most of the fuel oil and about 9,000 metric tons of the granular cement cargo. No pollution was reported. The investigation into the casualty continues.
