A freight distribution center placing high-demand logistics capability inside a global trade gateway will soon take shape here. The Port of Oakland said today that work should begin this fall on a long-awaited Seaport Logistics Complex.The complex is envisioned as a cargo-handling campus that could change the trajectory of Port business. The catalyst for growth: a nearly $700 million injection of capital from outside investors. That’s the message Port of Oakland officials delivered to trade and transportation leaders here this week. “This is good, measured growth that’s not debilitating for our community or our operations,” Executive Director Chris Lytle told a meeting of the Port’s 55-member Efficiency Task Force. Oakland Port Okays Seaport Logistics Complex
A long-held vision to revitalize this city’s decommissioned Army base is nearer reality at the Port of Oakland. Port Commissioners have given initial approval to a landmark deal with CenterPoint Properties for a logistics center at the former base. The tentative agreement caps nearly 15 years of planning for the most-anticipated Port growth project ever. Port officials said today that the agreement includes unprecedented commitments to hire local workers. “The future is at hand,” said Port of Oakland Executive Director Chris Lytle. The Board of Port Commissioners voted initial approval of the agreement last night. It comes up for final vote Nov. 30. If Commissioners say yes a second time, the deal becomes official in January.
APL Buys Land for Intermodal Container Terminal in Ill.
APL, the world’s seventh largest container shipping carrier, confirmed a land purchase in the city of Joliet, Ill., to develop its latest intermodal container terminal in the United States. The 43 acres of space was acquired from CenterPoint Properties within the CenterPoint Intermodal Center, the largest inland port in the U.S. APL’s new container yard will be advantageously located close to the Union Pacific and BNSF Intermodal Rail Terminals, as well as numerous customer warehouse and distribution centers. Due for completion by December 2011, the container yard will function as APL’s Chicago Global Gateway, serving customers in Chicago and the surrounding areas. It will feature automated gate technology, an equipment maintenance facility as well as reefer servicing capabilities.
BOEMRE Meetings on PEIS for 2012-17 OCS Leasing Program
The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation and Enforcement (BOEMRE) announced that it will hold a series of public scoping meetings in February 2011 on the Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement (PEIS) for the proposed 2012-2017 Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) Oil and Gas Leasing Program.
