Coast Guard Cutter Elm Heads to Baltimore for Overhaul

The 20-year-old U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Elm is scheduled to make its way to the Coast Guard Yard in Baltimore this month for a planned major dry dock overhaul. The cutter’s departure from Atlantic Beach, N.C. will mark its last from its current homeport. After the overhaul work is completed, the Elm will report to a new homeport in Astoria, Oregon. Coast Guard Cutter Maple, which is presently undergoing a midlife overhaul of its own, will replace the Elm in Atlantic Beach this April.

Tucked away on the shores of the Sandy Hook Bay in central New Jersey resides Ohmsett – The National Oil Spill Response Research and Renewable Energy Test Facility. It has been an integral part of the spill response community for more than three and a half decades. Government agencies, private industry, and oil spill response organizations from around the world have visited the facility for testing, research and training.

Sea Tow Reports Increased Boating Activity and Calls for Assistance Midway Through July 4th Holiday Week. Incidents Underscore the Need to Follow Commonsense Boating Safety Guidelines. The extended July 4th holiday has been one of the busiest in recent years for Sea Tow Services International Inc., the nation’s leading on-water assistance provider, and its network of Sea Tow locations across the U.S. This increased activity reflects a growing desire among boaters to enjoy the many benefits of the boating lifestyle with friends and family. By midway through the July 4th holiday week, which runs this year from June 29-July 8, 2012, Sea Tow already had received more than 2,200 calls for assistance.

NJ Yacht Explosion Likely a Sham

The U.S. Coast Guard says a reported explosion on a motor yacht off central New Jersey likely was a hoax costing hundreds of thousands of dollars Associated Press reports that the multi-agency mission was launched after authorities received an emergency radio transmission around 4:20 p.m. Monday from a boat identifying itself as the Blind Date. The caller reported the boat was 17 nautical miles east of Sandy Hook and had 21 people aboard and several people were injured. The Coast Guard has begun an investigation to determine who was responsible for what it considers a hoax, as no wreckage or survivors where seen despite extensive searches.

Seastreak New Jersey To Be Christened

Local and state dignitaries will converge on the Monmouth County waterfront to take part in the official unveiling and christening of the M/V SeaStreak New Jersey. and East 34th St. in Manhattan. The christening ceremony will be held on Monday, December 10, 2001 at 11:00 a.m. at the Atlantic Highlands Municipal Marina, Pier 6 in Atlantic Highlands. Honoring an ancient tradition and officially naming the vessel will be its Godmother, Miss New Jersey Julie Barber. Among those participating in the ceremony will be a representative of the Coast Guard Reverend Peter Larom of the Seaman's Church in Manhattan. Highlands and South Amboy have also been invited to participate in the festivities.

Seastreak Launches M/V Seastreak New Jersey

Seastreak America Inc. has added another catamaran ferry to its service within the New York City commuter market with the December 10, 2001 launch of M/V Seastreak New Jersey. The 141-ft. (42.9-m), 400 passenger high speed catamaran will provide daily commuter ferry service from Atlantic Highlands and Highlands, N.J. to Pier 11 near Wall Street and East 34th Street in Manhattan. SeaStreak New Jersey is the sister ship of SeaStreak New York and joins the fleet of the 300-passenger SeaStreak Manhattan and SeaStreak Liberty, which also provides commuter services between central New Jersey and Manhattan; the 149-passenger Seastreak Brooklyn accommodates commuters between Brooklyn and Manhattan.
