Excessive Rain Disrupts US River Barge Shipping

Excessive rains across the central United States over the past week have slowed the harvest of corn and soybeans, while rising water levels closed at least three locks on the Upper Mississippi River, a key artery for shipping Midwest grain to U.S. Gulf exporters.Cash bids for corn shipped by barge to the Gulf firmed on Tuesday, reflecting exporter demand and dwindling pipeline supplies as rising river levels slowed barge traffic.The United States is the world's top corn supplier, and sales of the yellow grain represent one U.S.

Coast Guard Closes Portion of Upper Mississippi

The Coast Guard yesterday has closed a portion of the Upper Mississippi River to all vessel traffic from mile markers 184 to 179, due to hazardous condition on the river near St. Louis. Capt. Martin Malloy, Upper Mississippi River Captain of the Port, closed the portion of the river near MacArthur Bridge due to extremely high water levels and fast currents caused by a sudden increase in severe weather around the central United States. Malloy, as Captain of the Port determines when to issue a river closure by following a Waterways Action Plan, which provides the marine industry, U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, state and local governments with a plan for facilitating the safe and orderly movement of traffic during extreme conditions on the inland rivers.

Midland Surveying Awarded DofD Contract

In the latest listing of US Department of Defense contracts, Midland Surveying, Inc., Maryville, Mo., was awarded a $9,000,000 firm-fixed-price, indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract for architect-engineer surveying and mapping of shallow water habitat, floodplain changes and vegetation cover at various nationwide locations. Funding and performance locations will be determined with each order. Estimated completion date is April 24, 2019. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Omaha District, Omaha, Neb., is the contracting activity. Midland Surveying, Inc. and Midland GIS Solutions, LLC say on their web-site that they work closely on numerous projects for a variety of clients throughout the central United States.
