Season's First 'Saltie' Calls Port of Duluth-Superior

Two Electric Tugs Built for SAAM Towage in Canada

Macquarie to Divest U.S. Port Terminal Operator Ceres

Australian financial conglomerate Macquarie Group said on Thursday it would divest its U.S.-based port terminal operator Ceres Terminals, with a source familiar with the matter placing the deal value north of $900 million.Macquarie did not disclose any further details on the deal, and declined to comment on Reuters' request seeking confirmation of the sale value.The Wall Street Journal in May reported that Macquarie was looking for about $1 billion from the sale, citing sources familiar with the matter.The deal value could be at the lower end of what the Wall Street Journal reported…

Macquarie Expects $1 Billion from Sale of US Port Terminal Operator Ceres

SAAM Towage Receives New Tug in Chile

SAAM Towage received a new tug in Valparaiso, the Mataquito II, which passed its seaworthiness testing in Turkey, supervised by the crew that will operate it.SAAM Towage Technical Manager Pablo Cáceres explained that “this tug allows safe and effective control of the maneuver in complex operations where it is necessary to assist ships at a speed of up to 10 knots, thanks to its installed capacity and electro-hydraulic control system of the forward winch.The Mataquito II measures 29 meters wide and 13 meters in beam, and is certified with Escort and Fire-Fighting 1 class notation.

SAAM Towage Chile will soon receive a new tug, the Mataquito II, which already passed its seaworthiness testing in Turkey, the last step before being commissioned.The Deputy Maintenance Manager for SAAM Towage Chile and members of its new crew were present for the testing. On Monday at the Port of Savannah, representatives from Gateway Terminals, the International Longshoremen’s Association and the Georgia Ports Authority joined to mark the first container moved under the direction of Gateway, a new joint venture company combining locally the three legacies of Ports America, Ceres Marine Terminals and SSA Atlantic.Ports America, Ceres Marine Terminals and SSA Atlantic have consolidated container terminal, truck gate and stevedoring services under Gateway Terminals to streamline their activities.

SAAM Towage Orders Tug Pair from UZMAR

SAAM Towage said it signed a contract with Turkish shipbuilder UZMAR Shipyards to begin building two new tugs that will provide services for a liquefied natural gas (LNG) project being developed by Energía del Pacífico (EDP) in El Salvador.The new RAstar 3200W azimuth tugs were designed by Canadian firm Robert Allan Ltd. and will be built in Turkey by UZMAR. DryLog Joins Rapid Ocean Response Emergency

Slipstream, a 60-m Burgess motor yacht, and her crew were presented with the annual Yachts de Coeur humanitarian prize in Cannes in June 2018. The award was presented to recognize their efforts to aid the Caribbean islands and people affected by Hurricanes Irma and Maria in Autumn 2017. Season’s First Saltie Heads for Duluth-Superior

The first ‘saltie’ of the 2018 commercial navigation season is on its way to the Port of Duluth-Superior. The 656-foot bulk carrier Federal Weser is scheduled to pass beneath Duluth’s Aerial Lift Bridge by 10 p.m. tonight and is expected to start loading Monday morning at the CHS terminal on the Superior side of the harbor. If all goes according to plan, the ship should depart late Tuesday or Wednesday with 21,400 metric tons of durum wheat bound for Algeria. The Federal Weser, part of the Fednav fleet, last visited the Twin Ports in 2015. This year, the Marshall-Islands-flagged bulker stopped on its way to Duluth-Superior to deliver a load of steel in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. The vessel has 22 crew members on board and is under the command of Captain Umesh C. Sharma.

Maersk Ship Ablaze in Arabian Sea, 4 Crew Missing

Maersk has reported an active fire in a cargo hold on its liner vessel Maersk Honam en route from Singapore toward Suez around 900 nautical miles southeast of Salalah, Oman. After firefighting efforts were unsuccessful, the crew sent out a distress signal and a total of 23 crew members were evacuated to the nearby vessel ALS Ceres, which arrived at the scene around 18:30 GMT. Four crew members remain missing. The fire on board the Maersk Honam continues and the situation of the vessel is very critical, Maersk said. The cause of the fire is currently unknown. Maersk Line said it will investigate the matter in cooperation with all relevant authorities. The Indian Coast Guard is involved in emergency response efforts.

Mississippi River Intermodal Terminal Dedicated

The Board of Commissioners of the Port of New Orleans joined a host of elected officials and industry partners today to dedicate the Port’s new $25 million Mississippi River Intermodal Terminal. The terminal, made possible by a $16.7 million federal transportation TIGER grant, has a capacity of moving 160,000 twenty-foot-equivalent units (TEUs) per year by rail. “This new terminal provides a highly efficient option for our customers moving cargo via rail,” said Gary LaGrange, Port President and CEO. The Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) grant provided about 68 percent of the total funding for the terminal.

GE Marine Powered Tugs Delivered to SAAM

SAAM has taken delivery of its first two tugs to be powered by GE Marine. These new 80-ton RAstar 3200 terminal support tugs include two 8L250 GE Marine diesel engines. Designed by Robert Allan Ltd. and built at Guangdong Bonny Fair Heavy Industry Limited in China, the tugs will operate out of Uruguay. “Arriero,” reached its new home port of Montevideo on November 16 and the second tug, “Maneador,” is currently en route. Two additional vessels ordered by SAAM and also to be powered by GE Marine, the “Yunco” and “Huairavo” will sail out of Chile.

NYK to Launch Car Carrier Service from Canaveral

NYK will begin car carrier transport service from Port Canaveral to Central and South Americas, starting October 10, 2015. The first vessel will be the MV Neptune Leader V 65. “With the relatively short trucking distance between Port Canaveral and the numerous auto and heavy equipment auctions located in Central Florida, the NYK service will provide area businesses with cost-effective options and positions us competitively with other Florida seaports,” said Alberto Cabrera, Port Canaveral’s Senior Director of Cargo Business Development.
