U.S. Fab Deliver Unique Maintenance and Mooring Barge

U.S. Fab, a Vigor Industrial company, has delivered the purpose-built vessel to Washington’s King County for the use of its passenger ferry fleet. The 140’x40’x7’6” barge features moorage for up to four vessels and two steel structures, one that houses a well-equipped maintenance workshop and the other a two-story office and crew quarters. “This was an interesting project that required teams to integrate two different building classification standards while maintaining optimal cost efficiencies,” explained Bryan Nichols, Sales and Marketing Manager for Vigor Industrial.

Panama Canal to Host International Engineering Congress

Panama City, Panama - The Panama Canal Authority will host its first-ever best practices Engineering and Infrastructure Congress, in an effort to share best practices and detailed, practical, hands-on experience related to managing a significant infrastructure project. Engineering experts from 10 countries will meet in Panama to exchange the latest tendencies and experiences in the industry at the international level. Occurring April 18-20, 2012, in Panama City, Panama, the congress will gather world-renowned experts in the fields of geotechnical, electrical, structural and civil engineering. In addition, it will showcase infrastructure projects from around the world and update attendees on the progress of the Canal Expansion Program.

Panama Canal Engineering Congress to Focus on Best Practices for Infrastructure Projects

Panama City, Panama – The first-ever Panama Canal 2012 International Engineering and Infrastructure Congress, to be held April 18-20 in Panama City, will bring together technical experts and infrastructure leaders to share best practices for project delivery, risk management, and financing. CH2M HILL Chairman and CEO Lee McIntire will be one of the keynote speakers, as will ACP Administrator Alberto Aleman Zubieta and Steve Stockton from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineering. McIntire will discuss the essential problem-solving role of engineers and highlight the company's approach to program management on some of the world's largest infrastructure projects.

Two Finalist Proposals for New Port of Philadelphia Terminal

Less than three months after seeking proposals from interested parties to design, operate and maintain a major new marine terminal in South Philadelphia, Governor Edward G. Rendell announced on July 23 the shortlist of teams that will continue in the solicitation process developing a public-private partnership that is expected to bring millions of dollars of investment to the region. One of the teams selected was a consortium comprising Delaware River Stevedores (DRS) and Hyundai Merchant Marine America (HMMA). DRS is a joint venture between Carrix Inc., and Ports America Group, the two largest independent terminal operating companies in the United States. DRS has vast stevedoring experience at several major U.S. ports, including the Port of Philadelphia.

Port Authority Commission Delivers Security Equipment

The Port of Houston Authority (PHA) commission approved several recommendations involving contract awards, bids and proposals, professional services and general administrative and operational matters during its meeting on Monday, January 26. Chairman Jim Edmonds presided over the public meeting. The commission approved recommendations to issue purchase orders to Motorola, Inc., Dictaphone Corporation, and SBC, respectively, for radio system equipment, voice recorder equipment, and telephone lines that will be installed in the PHA's Emergency Command Center. The combined total amount of the purchase orders is not expected to exceed $385,000.

Panama Canal Awards Expansion Program Manager Contract

After a thorough evaluation of the received proposals, the Panama Canal Authority (ACP) awarded the Program Manager contract to CH2M Hill last Wednesday. The leading full-service global firm and number one program management firm in the United States will assist the ACP in the management of numerous contracts including those for design and construction of the two post-Panamax lock structures under its Expansion Program. The procurement process began June 1, when the ACP released its request for proposals seeking a top-tier firm with a strong reputation in program management and with experience working on a variety of major international construction projects. On July 17, the ACP began reviewing the three bid submissions from CH2M Hill, Parsons Brinkerhoff and URS Holdings, Inc.

AAPA Presents Awards

Thirty-two ports received 60 Communications awards, two ports won awards for information technology projects, and five ports were recognized for outstanding Environmental programs during the September 25 awards luncheon at The Breakers in Palm Beach, Florida, during the American Association of Port Authorities’ (AAPA) 91st Annual Convention. In addition, five maritime professionals earned Professional Port Manager (PPM7) Certification from AAPA. AAPA’s Annual Communications Competition recognizes excellence in the products and services that ports produce to meet their public relations and marketing goals. The independent judges, communications professionals from the Washington, D.C. area, honored the best entries with 30 awards of excellence and 30 awards of merit.

AAPA Names Baer Director of Communications

Port industry veteran Lori A. Baer has been appointed director of communications of the American Association of Port Authorities. "We are pleased to be able to bring to this key position an experienced professional with such familiarity with the goals of ports throughout the Western Hemisphere," said Kurt J. Nagle, president of the AAPA. Baer began her port industry career at AAPA in 1982, initially as executive assistant to the president and then as director of membership services. She was involved in the development of the AAPA's highly successful education and training programs. In 1985, Baer began a 12-year stint at the Port of Miami, serving four years as marketing and public relations assistant and the final eight of those years as director of promotions and advertising.
