Tough Twins: New Fireboats for Port of Long Beach

Canada based naval architect and marine engineering firm Robert Allan Ltd. is a leading designer of high-performance response vessels of many types and in particular, large fireboats for major ports worldwide. In addition to the vessels’ outwardly obvious role of fighting fires, these vessels also serve as incident command centers or as primary response vessels for any local emergency actions requiring water-based control. Robert Allan Ltd. was awarded a contract in the summer of 2011 to prepare plans and specifications for a pair of fireboats for the Port of Long Beach, Calif.

$30m for Washington State Port Security

April 8, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) announced that Washington state ports will receive $30.3m for port security efforts across the state this year. The funds, which will now begin to be distributed to state ports, will go toward infrastructure security improvements including chemical detectors, cameras, security gates, access controls, and training and exercises. “As we work to stabilize our economy and spur investment in Washington state, it is critically important that our ports remain secure and open for business,” Senator Murray said. The funding for these grants was included in the Fiscal Year 2009 Port Security Grant Program.

Navy Celebrates Delivery of 1000th MTRS Robot

The Navy recently celebrated the delivery of the 1000th Man Transportable Robotic System (MTRS) to joint service explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) technicians around the globe during a recognition ceremony at the Naval EOD Technology Division (NAVEODTECHDIV). Developed in accordance with joint service EOD requirements over a two and a half-year period and beginning out of the ashes of the (Sept. 11, 2001) terror attacks, the MTRS program robots today are used primarily in the Global War on Terrorism to seek out and destroy improvised explosive devices (IEDs). Ellen Purdy, a director for the Joint Ground Robotics Enterprise under the Office of the Secretary of Defense, noted that five years ago, there were only three ground robots.
