DNV GL Debuts Tool to Support Wider Adoption of LNG as Fuel

European Autumn Gas Conference, The Hague: Greater use of LNG as fuel would reduce global emissions of greenhouse gases, but barriers remain to its widespread adoption. One challenge is the varying compositions of LNG fuel globally, which can lead to engine damage and failure. DNV GL has now addressed this by developing a new online PKI Methane Number Calculator1 to match fuel quality with an engine’s requirements, and which can also support the development of an international standard. The PKI Methane Number Calculator can be applied to a wide range of engine types and used across the entire supply chain by engine manufacturers, ship and truck owners, traders, as well as international policy makers on LNG.

“ProteOMZ” Surfaces Findings in Low Oxygen Ocean Waters

Dr. Mak Saito from Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, along with his research team have just returned from a 22 day expedition, called “ProteOMZ”, aboard Schmidt Ocean Institute’s research vessel Falkor. During this voyage the team implemented the first large-scale deployment of a new protein biomarker technology. The “targeted metaproteomics” approach will be used to diagnose marine microbial populations and their interaction with ocean chemistry. Using underwater pumps, the upper 1 kilometer of the ocean’s microbial microbiome was sampled by filtering 85,000 liters of seawater over a 7,000 kilometers transit from Hawaii to Tahiti.

Oceans Can’t Take Any more: Researchers Fear Fundamental Change

Our oceans need an immediate and substantial reduction of anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions. If that doesn’t happen, we could see far-reaching and largely irreversible impacts on marine ecosystems, which would especially be felt in developing countries. That’s the conclusion of a new review study published today in the journal Science. In the study, the research team from the Ocean 2015 initiative assesses the latest findings on the risks that climate change poses for our oceans, and demonstrates how fundamentally marine ecosystems are likely to change if human beings continue to produce just as much greenhouse gases as before.

Kongsberg Maritime Establishes Cybernetics R&D Groupo

The group, which is currently recruiting new members, will mainly consist of PhD-level professionals in the field of engineering cybernetics, says  head of the group, Morten Breivik. As an interdisciplinary field established during the Second World War, cybernetics takes its name from the Greek word 'kybernetes', meaning 'steersman'. Historically, cybernetics has always been a core competence for Kongsberg Maritime. It started with sophisticated ship automation solutions from Norcontrol in the 1960s and continued with dynamic positioning from KV Albatross in the 1970s. Today Kongsberg Maritime is the custodian of this proud heritage, furthering it into a maritime world which is facing fundamental changes to operational concepts and manning solutions in the future.

Product Focus

Datamodul´s daughter-company, CONRAC GmbH was awarded by Kelvin Hughes for the delivery of Type Approved TFT Displays in their new and future IBS Programs. Next to the superior performance and quality aspects, one of the main reasons for this decision was, the high level of own development integrated in the concerned TFT monitors. The result can be recognized in the Queen Mary 2 bridge. All TFT displays are delivered in an OEM Chassis-Only version, ready for integration in the special design of the bridge. During the late 1990's Kelvin Hughes realized that the availability of cathode ray tubes (CRTs) for use in bridge navigation displays, such as Radar and ECDIS, was becoming limited.

Iraqi Oil Sector 'Doing Nothing' To Prepare For Y2K

Iraq's oil industry is not prepared to deal with the millennium bug and may be forced to shut down production and exports at the turn of the year, according to an industry source in Baghdad. The source said Iraqi oil officials are aware of the year 2000 computer problem but have decided to avoid the multi-million dollar cost of dealing with it. There was no immediate comment from the oil ministry. "There is awareness of Y2K but consultancy is very expensive. The alternative is to lose production over the millennium," the source said. He said Iraqi crude pumping stations and export facilities were likely to be hit by the problem and engineers would have to deal with disruptions as necessary.
