Odfjell Says It Will Not Install Scrubbers

Chemical tanker firm Odfjell said it will not invest in scrubbers to clean fuel on its vessels to comply with new stricter emission rules from 2020 but instead buy fuel which meets the new standards.To combat air pollution, the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the United Nations' shipping agency, has set global regulations to cap the sulphur content in marine fuel, known as bunkers, at 0.5 percent, down from 3.5 percent now.Shipowners can either install scrubbers, which clean the cheaper high sulphur fuel oil, or buy costlier marine gasoil."Our conclusion for the moment is that it do

Odfjell's Tanker Overhaul Seeks to Slash Emissions by 20%

Norwegian tanker shipper Odfjell announced it is upgrading the propulsion systems aboard 19 of its chemical tanker vessels in a move that aims to reduce its fuel consumption and emissions by up to 20 percent. The upgrades, which include the retrofit of new energy efficient propeller blades and rudder-bulbs, as well as technical improvements to the ships’ main engines, turbo chargers and shaft generators, will place Odfjell’s vessels among the most energy efficient chemical tankers in the world, the shipper said.

Odfjell Buys New Vessel

Odfjell entered into a contract for the purchase of MT Holly Galaxy, a 19,975 dwt chemical tanker (IMO II/III) with 22 stainless steel cargo tanks, built in 2006 at Fukuoka Shipbuilding in Japan. The vessel will be delivered in December 2011 and shall be traded regionally in South America. We are in the process of achieving long term financing of the vessel. - Holly Galaxy will be vessel number 99 in the Odfjell controlled fleet of sophisticated chemical tanker vessels, says Jan A. Telenor Signs with AUR

Telenor Satellite Services today announced the signing of a business agreement with Anders Utkilens Rederi (AUR) of Norway, one of northern Europe's largest maritime chemical transportation companies. The contract calls for Telenor to provide its Sealink maritime high-speed data communications solution aboard AUR's fleet of 16 chemical tanker vessels. Under the terms of this multi-year agreement, Telenor will provide Ku-Band service for AUR's entire fleet that operates primarily throughout European waters. Sealink's Ku- Band service provides AUR the capability to use high-speed communications applications at sea including LAN and WAN connectivity, video conferencing, and Internet access, while using smaller, less expensive shipboard equipment.
