Home Study For Mariners

Professional mariners learn in a variety of ways, times and places. They have to. After spending months at sea, that homeport time can be hard to fill up with training. Sorensen offers home study programs with various options to prepare deck officers and engineers. The 500/1600 Master/Mate Inland or Near Coastal program prepares mariners to earn their Master or Mate license on vessels not exceeding 500 or 1,600 gross registered tons and operating within inland or near coastal waters. Students also receive one week of exam preparation at the Chesapeake Marine Training Institute campus.

Home Study Programs for Working Mariners

If there’s anything Capt. Guy Sorensen’s learned in his decades of working with professional mariners it’s that they learn in a variety of ways, times and places. They have to. After spending weeks and months at sea, that precious homeport time can be hard to fill up with training. “That’s why we launched our home study programs,” said Sorensen, who founded the Virginia-based Chesapeake Marine Training Institute in 1992 following a career in the U.S. Coast Guard. “It’s important to us to accommodate all students and offer them a high quality education…

USCG and CMTI Warn of Counterfeit Fire Extinguishers

Beware of counterfeit U.S. Coast Guard-approved portable fire extinguishers. The U.S. Coast Guard announced that it was made aware of counterfeit extinguishers said to be manufactured by Amerex Corporation and Buckeye Fish Equipment. “Both companies are major producers of genuine approved fire extinguishing equipment,” the U.S. Coast Guard said in a marine safety alert issued in March 2013. “Counterfeit portable fire extinguishers pose a safety hazard for any vessel that has one on board,” said Chesapeake Marine Training Institute’s President and Founder, Capt. Guy Sorensen.

Training & Education: NOAA Computerized Training to Unify, Save Money

When it comes to rolling out training to vessel crew and scientists, The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA) faces challenges similar to most other large fleets deployed within the waterways, coastal and offshore regions of the United States. These challenges include a geographically dispersed trainees and little time available in a busy work schedule to take time out for full day training sessions. In addition, while on leave crew and scientists want to be able to enjoy their time away from work with family and friends rather than attend classroom training to update qualifications or skills. NOAA operates and maintains the largest fleet of non-military research and survey ships operated by a federal agency.
