Coscocs Targets 2 Mln TEUs by 2018

China's biggest shipping line China Ocean Shipping Corporation (Coscocs) has revealed an ambitious plan to increase its container shipping capacity to hit a 2 million TEUs over the next three years, says China Daily. The company is raising the operational capacity in an effort to seize a larger slice of the cake, known as the East-West and South-North routes. Wan Min, general manager of China COSCO Shipping, said Chinese shipping companies mainly operate container shipping services on Asia-Africa and China-Southeast shipping lines, the competition will therefore focus on major shipping lines in particular Asia-Europe and Asia-America routes.

COSCO Sponsors Chinese Sailor's Solo Circumnavigation

A Chinese sailor is planning a solo, non-stop circumnavigation of the globe in November, attempting to make the journey in a world-record time for a 40-foot sail boat. Guo will depart from Qingdao and then head eastwards for Cape Horn in Chile. After sailing past the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa, it is hoped that he will pass through the Malacca Straits and finally return to Qingdao. The 47-year-old sailor is being trained in Europe. "Guo's circumnavigation will showcase the ambition, perseverance and pioneering spirit of the Chinese people. We are happy to sponsor him as he is the pride of China," said Wei Jiafu, COSCO president.

COSCO Launches New Shipping Service

China Ocean Shipping Corporation (COSCO) Container Lines has launched a weekly shipping service from Shanghai to Japan and the U.S. east coast. Operated jointly by COSCO, Japan's Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha Ltd. and Yang Ming Lines of Taiwan, the service will shorten travel time between Hong Kong and New York from 33 days to 26 days and went into operation on Monday, officials said. The route starts in Shanghai with stops at Yantian, in south China's Guangdong province, Hong Kong, and the U.S. cities of New York, Norfolk, Virginia, Charleston, South Carolina, and Japan's Tokyo and Kobe, they said. Nine ships, each with a capacity of 3,400 teu, will reportedly be used on the route.

LR to Class First 10,000 TEU Containership

Lloyd’s Register is to class the world’s largest declared capacity container ships – four 10,000 teu vessels, to be built in Korea at Hyundai Heavy Industries for China Ocean Shipping Corporation (Cosco). The vessels will be delivered between late 2007 and mid-2008. Each of the ships will measure 1,145 x 149.6 x 90.8 ft.(349 x 45.6 x 27.7) and is powered with a 12-cylinder 94,000 hp engine driving it to 25.8 knots. “The 10,000 teu container ships ordered by Cosco are the next step towards the 12,500 teu limit,” said David Tozer, Lloyd’s Register’s Business Manager - Container Ships. “Beyond 12,500 teu we expect that container ship and container terminal design will have to undergo significant change.
