NYK Wood-Chip Carrier Rescues Woman Near the Philippines

Southern Ace, a wood-chip carrier operated by NYK, spotted a woman in distress on the sea surface near the Philippines at around 17:45 (local time) on July 5 while sailing from Albany, Australia, to Niigata, Japan.After notifying the Philippine Coast Guard, the vessel rescued the person and handed her over to the coast guard at 21:00 on the same day.Captain Rex D. Lumosbog led the rescue by Southern Ace.

New Wood Chip Carrier Will Collect Ocean Microplastics

A newly built wood chip carrier vessel recently delivered to Japanese shipping company NYK is equipped to collect ocean microplatics for researchers to study.The Stellar Harmony, built by Imabari's Iwagi Zosen Co., Ltd shipyard, was officially handed over on August 23. The vessel will transport wood chips mainly from New Zealand, Australia, North America and South America under a long-term contract between NYK and Marusumi Paper Co., Ltd.Once in operation, the ship will pump in seawater along its routes to collect microplastics floating in the ocean.

NYK to Send 110 Workers to Help with Clean-up after Wood-chip Carrier Breaks Apart off Japan

Japanese shipping firm NYK plans to send 110 employees in total by September 11 to help with the clean-up at the area where the NYK-chartered Crimson Polaris wood-chip carrier ran aground earlier this month, dropping cargo and spilling oil into the sea as the hull of the vessel split in two.NYK said Tuesday it would make a total of 11 dispatches of 10 employees each by September 11 to assist with the area clean-up."As the charterer of the vessel, NYK has sent company personnel to the site to assist with the clean-up of the cargo and other debris that has washed ashore.

MOL Adds Southern Treasure to its Fleet

Japanese shipping company Mitsui O.S.K. A new wood chip carrier was delivered for Hokuetsu Corporation on September 11 at Oshima Shipbuilding Co. Ltd. in Saikai city, Nagasaki, Japan, and a naming and delivery ceremony was held on the same day. JFPA Selects MOL Vessels for 2016 'Best Quality Ships Award'

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) said that two MOL-operated and managed vessels - the wood chip carrier WORLD SWAN II and the containership MOL MAGNIFICENSE - were among seven selected to receive the 2016 "Best Quality Ships Award" from the Japan Federation of Pilots' Associations (JFPA). The awards, introduced in 2003, are aimed at heightening awareness of the need to protect harbors and the marine environment through safe operation of oceangoing vessels. The ships receiving the awards are those judged superior by members of the JFPA. For the 2016 awards, seven vessels were selected from among ships that requested pilots at pilotage districts throughout Japan in September and October.

NYK Fixes Charter for Wood-chip Carrier

NYK has concluded a long-term contract with Hokuetsu Kishu Paper Co. Ltd. for a new wood-chip carrier to be built by Oshima Shipbuilding Co. Ltd. and delivered in 2018. The ship will be able to load 4.3 million cubic feet of wood chips and will feature an advanced eco-design and electronically controlled engines.   NYK currently has long-term contracts with Hokuetsu Kishu Paper for six wood-chip carriers, the largest share of contracts that any shipping company has with Hokuetsu Kishu Paper, and this new contact will strengthen NYK’s transportation capacity further.   In accordance with its “More Than Shipping 2018” medium-term management plan, NYK will continue its efforts to make use of creative solutions to provide stable and economical coal transport.

NYK Vessel Rescues Fishermen on Philippines Coast

On July 7, Crimson Polaris, a wood-chip carrier operated by NYK Line, rescued nine fishermen in distress off the coast of the Philippines. While Crimson Polaris was sailing from Australia to China through a navigational lane in the South China Sea on July 7, the ship’s crew members spotted the fishermen, pulled them to safety, and began administering first aid. The fishing boat had departed from Bolinao in the Philippines on July 3 and had overturned and sunk in bad weather two days later. The fishermen were rescued on July 7, and handed over to the coast guard the next day and returned home.

Japan Shipyard Orders Continue Decline

In December 2014, orders of Japan yard fell 37% year on year, says Japan Ship Exporters’ Association (JSEA). Japanese shipyards specialize in building dry bulk carriers. JSEA member yards secured 24 export orders totaling 1,215,100gt in December 2014 which was down from 44 export orders compared to the previous year. In December, the orders showed an improvement from November 2014 when JSEA members received 10 orders totaling 338,750gt. The orders include one general cargo ship, seven Handy size bulkers, six Handymax bulkers, three Panamax bulkers, one Capesize bulker, one chip carrier, one products tanker and four LNG carriers. Due to a tonnage overhang for Panamaxes there was a downward pressure on dry bulk freight rates.

Marine Pollution Control Off-Loads New Carissa

Detroit-based Marine Pollution Control Corp. (MPC), aided in unloading oil from New Carissa, a Japanese-owned wood chip carrier that ran aground in Coos Bay, Ore. MPC was called in because of its experience in pumping viscous petroleum products, including coal tar and asphalt, and in heating oils in order to make them easier to pump. MPC also has extensive experience in working in dangerous, unstable conditions. While only 400 ft. offshore, New Carissa was being rocked by winds and waves. The world-renowned company is best known for helping to clean up the Exxon Valdez oil spill after lightering the cargo remaining onboard after running aground on Bligh Reef. MPC also responded in the Persian Gulf when Iraq dumped millions of gallons of oil into the sea during the Gulf War.

Oregon settles with owners of New Carissa

The Oregon Department of State Lands (DSL) reached a settlement with the owners of the wood chip carrier NEW CARISSA regarding removal of the wreckage. The owners have agreed to pay $22.1m, which the state will use to pay its legal expenses and to complete the wreck removal. The DSL released a Fact Sheet discussing the settlement process; a Summary providing an overview of the grounding on February 4, 1999 and some subsequent developments related to the wreckage; and a Timeline discussing all major events including attempts to burn the fuel onboard with napalm, the re-grounding of the bow section, and the ultimate sinking of the bow section using a torpedo fired by a US Navy submarine. source: HK Law

Mitsui-MAN B&W Diesel Engine Achieves World Record

This world record is established when MES completes the construction of Mitsui-MAN B&W 6S50MC-C Mark 7 at its Tamano Works (Tamano City, Okayama Prefecture) for Sanoyasu Hishino Meisho Corporation (with president Mr. Shinich Kimura), who will install such engine to a chip carrier of 4.35 million cubic feet (shipyard No. 1260) to her owner, Mitsui OSK Lines. In the wake of growing demand for new shipbuilding boosted by active ocean cargo transport, the production of diesel engine by MES is significantly increasing recently. Only after two years and five months since MES achieved 50 million horse power production in October 2005, it establishes accumulated 60 million horse power record since it produced the first engine in 1928.

TITAN Jack-Up Barges for Wreck Removal

TITAN Salvage's jack-up barges Karlissa-A and Karlissa-B arrived in Rotterdam, Netherlands on Jan. 22 for the wreck removal of the Vinca Gorthon, a roll-on/roll-off vessel, which sank in the North Sea in 1988. The Ministry of Waterways North Sea Division, part of the Dutch, Ministry of Waterways, awarded TITAN the wreck removal project. The Vinca Gorthon lies approximately 29 kilometers off the Netherland coast at a depth of 80.4 ft in a very busy shipping traffic lane. The vessel protrudes 32.8 ft from the seabed and has become a danger to modern ships with a draft of 49.2 ft or more.
