Tech Profile: Colfax CM-1000

AFTER

As ship owners scrupulously search for means to cut costs by saving energy, Colfax offers the CM-1000 Series, a smart technology which helps to monitor and control sea water cooling system pumps. It can help to save more money than you think. Colfax introduced earlier this year the CM-1000 Series, a smart technology designed to help monitor and control sea water cooling system pumps in a manner that senses water temperature and speed to optimize the pump use. Savings for the shipowner come not only via fuel used to power the pumps (in some cases…

Colfax Fluid Handling Introduce ALLMIND Pump System

ALLMIND will protect a pump, maximises efficiency, lower energy usage and lower maintenance and spare parts costs, claims manufacturer Colfax Fluid Handling (a business of Colfax Corporation a leader in critical fluid-handling, transfer solutions for the commercial marine, defense, oil & gas, power and industry). Energy costs account for 85 per cent of the total cost of ownership for ballast and cooling pumps, demonstrating the importance of assessing total cost of ownership rather than basing purchasing decisions purely on initial cost. The concept is just as relevantly applied to upgrade decisions, says Christian Martin, Director, Product Management Commercial Marine at Colfax.

Low Sulphur Fuels Cause Pump Deterioration

Due to new regulations, the shipping community is faced with new challenges on a large scale, especially those ships that operate both inside and outside environmental zones and switching over from one fuel to another. For a long time the traditional approach to operation on heavy fuel oils (HFO) has been “pier-to-pier”. This is all going to change, said Allweiler, a world-leading provider of marine pumps to the shipping industry. When global ship operator BW Gas overhauled a low-performing fuel service pump, it discovered high wear on pump elements. BW Gas concludes that a contributing factor to the increased wear rate on the pump can be the 0.1% Sulphur marine gas oil used in EU ports, however it is also clear that other factors play a significant role.
