Contship Italia Volumes rise

Contship Italia Group, Italy’s leading maritime container terminal and intermodal operator saw an increase in handled volume of 1.7% and 9.7% increase in transported volumes for 2016. The group’s Maritime Container Terminal business saw an increase of 109,000 TEUs in overall handling volumes in 2016, welcoming 6,888 vessel calls, up 4% year on year. Contship’s intermodal business reported an overall rise in transported volumes and directly operated number of trains. Innovative fast customs corridors, an improved load factor of domestic trains in the second half of the year, plus the increased routing of cargo via the southern gateway to south and central Europe, have all supported an increased market share of 25% in the Italian maritime intermodal business.

Colombo Port Volumes Surpasses 2mln TEUs

Colombo International Container Terminals (CICT) has reported a throughput of two million TEUs  for the 12 months ending 31 December 2016, a year-on-year growth of 28 percent in volume, enabling the Port of Colombo to register overall incremental growth during three consecutive years. Announcing the milestone achievement, CICT said ULCCs (Ultra Large Container Carriers) and VLCCs (Very large Container Carriers), many of a size that only the Colombo South Terminal is capable of handling, had contributed 70 percent to the volumes it achieved in 2016. CICT, run by China Merchants Port Holdings,  is the first and currently the only deep water terminal in South Asia equipped with facilities to handle the largest vessels afloat.

Concor Consortium to Bid for Colombo Container Terminal

Container Corporation of India (Concor) has  formed a consortium with APM Terminals B.V., John Keells Holdings and Maersk Line in order to bid for the development of East Container Terminal in Colombo, reports Hindu Business Line. The total project value is likely to be about $550-600 million. The Colombo Port currently has four container terminals. In 2008, a new harbour basin, the Colombo South Harbour was developed to accommodate deep draft vessels and the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) decided to develop four new terminals, each with a capacity of 2.4 million TEU’s (twenty-foot container equivalent unit - a measure used in container shipping) to cater to increasing demand.

Largest Ship to Dock in Colombo

M. V. Mogens Maersk, one of the world’s largest ships will arrived in Colombo yesterday. To mark the occasion, an on-boarding ceremony is being organized at the CICT Terminal at the Colombo port. Senior officials from the Maersk Group and regional office Maersk line in Sri Lanka along with Sri Lankan port officials and the top importers and exporters will grace the occasion. This state –of-the- art triple-E liner is calling on Colombo for the first time and it’s last port of call is Rotterdam. M. V. Mogens Maersk is part of the AE2 service, under the global 2M alliance between Maersk Line and MSC connecting Asia and Europe. AE2 service will call Colombo Eastbound and carry imports from Europe into Colombo as well as load exports from Colombo to China and Korea.

Consistent Growth from Contship Italia Group

Continuing support from key markets across Asia helped Contship Italia Group, the leading container terminal and intermodal transport operator in Italy, to report a steady set of results for 2015. Contship Italia Group terminals handled a total of 6.3 million TEUs last year on the back of increased volumes at La Spezia Container Terminal (LSCT), its main gateway for Asian cargo. LSCT, with four weekly calls from China, the Far East, and South East Asia, continues the positive trend that has seen Asia trade via La Spezia increase by 3.5% on the previous year (up 19% over the past five years). In 2015, 197 of 938 total calls at LSCT were associated with Asia services offered by the 2M, O3 and CKYHE alliances handling vessels in the 10,000-14,000 TEU capacity range.

Colombo Port Boosts Volumes

The Chinese-built Colombo International Container Terminals (CICT), which opened for business in 2014, has made significant gains in container handling last year surpassing 1.5 million TEUs, according to local media. The Terminal has set a record in 2015 with handling 1.561 million TEUs representing 1.57 percent increase over the year before and 67 percent of this volume is from ULCC (Ultra Large Container Carrier) and VLCC (Very large Container Carrier) segments. CICT is the first and currently the only deep water terminal in South Asia equipped with facilities to handle the largest vessels afloat. "The CICT-run “South Terminal” is making the right kind of waves, raking it in for Colombo port like never before and transforming Sri Lanka into a regional shipping hub," say local newspapers.

WISTA Launched in Sri Lanka

Women’s International Shipping and Trading Association (better known as WISTA),  was  launched  in  Sri  Lanka  on  the  03rd  July  2014,  at the  Hilton  Residencies  Colombo  amidst  a  large  and  distinguished  gathering  including  the  Chairman  of  the  Sri  Lanka  Ports  Authority,  Chairmen  &  Chairpersons  of  leading  Public  and  Private  Sector  Organizations  and  Institutes. WISTA Sri Lanka will function under the Presidency of Ms. Shehara Jayawardana, and consists of a 20 member committee which, to date,  has been successful  in  attracting 49 eminent females from shipping and shipping related industries to join its membership. Sanjam Gupta helps Launch WISTA in Sri Lanka

Within two years of the launch in India in 2012, the Women’s International Shipping and Trading Association (better known as WISTA), Ms. Sanjam  Sahi  Gupta, its Founder President, has moved fast to spread WISTA to the Indian sub continent. Her first significant effort in this direction has been the launch of WISTA in the neighboring country, Sri Lanka on 3rd July, 2014. The newly-opened $500 million Chinese-built Colombo terminal is situated about mid-way on the important East/West shipping route and is claimed to have facilities on a par with Singapore and Dubai. Sri Lanka’s Colombo Port Expanded

The newly expanded Colombo Port formally opened for business yesterday, a move that will allow Sri Lanka to enter as a leading South Asia trans-shipment hub. Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa opened the port, which was also attended by Xiaoyu Zhao, Vice-President at the Asian Development Bank (ADB). With a new breakwater, deeper basin, and the first of three modern new terminals now open, Colombo Port can accept the latest generation of 18,000 20-foot equivalent units (TEU) container ships and has facilities to send goods faster and more cost efficiently to other ports in the region.

CICT Sri Lanka Container Terminal Opens

China Merchant Holdings International (CMHI) subsidiary Colombo International Container Terminals (CICT) put the new terminal into trial operation mode with the arrival of the first ship to dock there, the 'M/V Coromandel'. CMHI owns an 85% interest in CICT, there will be altogether 4 berths and a quay length of 1200 meters, with a designed handling capacity of 2.4 million TEU, the first phase project covers 400 meters quay length. China Merchants' Guestimate Container Terminal Growth

China Merchants Holdings (International) Company recently held its AGM in Hong Kong and the Vice-Chairman predicted figures in the company's container terminal operation interests. The Company's Vice Chairman Li Jianhong, Managing Director Hu Jianhua, Deputy Managing Director Zheng Shaoping and Deputy General Manager & CFO Zhang Rizhong were interviewed by journalists after the AGM. Mr. Li Jianhong said: "This year from January to May, the company's container throughput growth is higher in north than south. The Mainland China and overseas overall growth is 9.2%.

Grand Alliance Changes Mediterranean Hub
