BP and Maersk Tankers successfully completed trials using marine fuel blended with biofuel on tankers as efforts grow to tackle the shipping sector's greenhouse gas emissions.Global shipping accounts for around 3% of global carbon emissions. The U.S Coast Guard has called off the search for missing pilot Bill Kinsinger, 55, and his Cirrus aircraft that vanished over the Gulf of Mexico. Last week, Kinsinger had plans to land in Georgiatown, Texas from Wiley Post Airport in Oklahoma City. When the plane failed to land, air traffic controllers attempted to reach Kinsinger, but received no response. Investigators said the plane continued on course past its destination, and was last observed on radar over the Gulf of Mexico, about 219 miles northwest of Cancun.

The U.S. Coast Guard is searching for an unresponsive aircraft that went missing in the Gulf of Mexico approximately 118 nautical miles north of the Yucatan Peninsula, Thursday. The Coast Guard said its watchstanders at the Eighth District command center in New Orleans received a report from the North American Aerospace Defense Command, Wednesday evening that one person aboard a privately owned Cirrus plane was unresponsive likely due to hypoxia. The pilot flew from Oklahoma City and was reportedly headed to Georgetown, Texas.

In a collaborative project with Australian industry, the Royal Australian Navy is extending its use of simulation to electronic warfare training. A common electronic warfare sensor suite is planned across the future fleet and future electronic warfare sailors need to have the advanced skills to meet upcoming demand. On Sunday, Jan. 25, 2015, at 5:21 p.m. local time while en route to Lahaina, Hawaii, Holland America Line’s ms Veendam answered a request for assistance from the United States Coast Guard to rescue a pilot who had ditched his single-engine Cirrus SR-22 after he experienced a mechanical issue with the fuel system. The pilot was located approximately 225 nautical miles off the coast of Maui, Hawaii. In partnership with the U.S. Coast Guard, Veendam was able to successfully rescue the pilot, who deployed the aircraft’s airframe parachute system and safely exited the plane into a life raft. Holland America Line crewmembers brought him aboard Veendam and provided him food and accommodations. The pilot, who was in good condition, disembarked today, Jan. 26, at Lahaina.

Rederi AB TransAtlantic subsidiary Viking Supply Ships says it has sold the 1985 built platform supply vessel SBS Cirrus. The vessel has been delivered to its new owners, and the sale of the vessel will have a positive impact of NOK 0.8 million on the third quarter results. After the sale of SBS Cirrus, Viking Supply Ships’ fleet now consists of eight anchor handling tug supply vessels and five platform supply vessels. The Coast Guard is responding to a plane crash Saturday approximately 51 miles southeast of Chincoteague Island. Watchstanders at the Coast Guard 5th District in Portsmouth received notification at approximately 2:40 p.m. that a single-engine Cirrus aircraft with only the pilot aboard failed to land at Manassas Regional Airport as scheduled. Instead the Cirrus remained at an altitude of approximately 13,000 feet and continued into restricted air space in the vicinity of Washington, D.C. Two U.S. NORAD F-16 aircraft came alongside the Cirrus to investigate and observed the pilot to be unconscious in the cockpit. The F-16 airmen escorted the Cirrus on its course over the Eastern Shore of Virginia until it crashed into the Atlantic Ocean.

Next year, developers hope to start building offshore wind turbines in the U.S., which is already a leader in on-land wind generation. As turbines spin off the coast in a dozen other countries, particularly the UK, Denmark, the Netherlands and Germany, global offshore wind capacity has expanded nearly six-fold since 2006. Most of these installations are in shallow water though winds are stronger out further. If the U.S. is to have offshore turbines, many residents want them distant enough so they can’t be seen or heard.

Island Oil & Gas Plc. said it has won the Q13b exploration licence from the Dutch government, valid for five years. The minister of economic affairs of the awarded the license to Island Netherlands B.V., a wholly owned unit of Island Oil, and , the designated operator, will hold a 100 percent working interest in the license. Island Oil intends to split the license into a shallow (oil) and deep (gas) part, with Island Oil operating the shallow part with a 100 percent interest and Cirrus Energy Nederland B.V. operating, on behalf of its partner Petro-Canada Netherlands B.V., the deep part in which Island Oil will have no equity interest.
