Industrial conglomerate Rolls-Royce is considering selling the bulk of its struggling marine business as the company embarks on another restructuring which aims to further slash costs. "We are embarking on a further simplification of the business, including the evaluation of strategic options for our Commercial Marine operation and a reduction from five operating businesses to three core units based around Civil Aerospace, Defence and Power Systems," said a press release from the company. As part of this exercise, the British maker of engines plasn to consolidate our Naval Marine and Nuclear Submarines operations within its existing Defence business, and Civil Nuclear operations within its Power Systems business.

Britain's Rolls-Royce said on Wednesday it was considering the sale of its commercial marine business, which has been hit by weak demand in offshore oil and gas markets, as part of a restructuring of the company into three core units. Shares in the company jumped after it said the loss-making unit could be sold. They were trading up 7.2 percent at 1330 GMT. The announcement came as part of a restructuring of the aero-engine maker into civil aerospace, defence and power systems units, with naval marine and nuclear submarines consolidated into defence and civil nuclear into power systems. The words ‘Rolls-Royce’ can roll right off your tongue, and when they do, the average person in the maritime space probably thinks first of big, powerful, and environmentally-correct marine engines. That might have rung true just two decades ago, but today, that visual doesn’t give justice to what the firm has evolved to become. That’s also where Jay McFadyen, Rolls-Royce Senior Vice President for Ship Intelligence, comes in. In a candid interview given at this year’s SMM Exposition in Hamburg, Germany, McFadyen laid out for Marine News not only what Rolls-Royce is up to today, but also where it is headed tomorrow.

Rolls-Royce is today announcing a new senior management structure as the first step in the wide-ranging restructuring announced on 12 November 2015. The move will simplify the organisation, drive operational excellence and reduce cost; ensuring Rolls-Royce is better placed to deliver long-term profitable growth. The current divisional structure of Aerospace and Land & Sea will end, removing a layer of senior management. From 1 January 2016, Rolls-Royce will operate as five market facing businesses, with the Presidents of Civil Aerospace, Defence Aerospace, Marine, Nuclear and Power Systems reporting directly to the Chief Executive. Our Civil Aerospace business will comprise of our merged Civil Large Engines (CLE) and our Civil Small and Medium Engines (CSME) businesses.

Rolls-Royce state that current trading is in line with expectations, and that their guidance for the full year is confirmed. Since the preliminary 2012 results in February, Rolls-Royce say they have won a US$1.6bn order from International Airlines Group (IAG) for Trent XWB engines, with long-term TotalCare® service support, to power 18 Airbus A350-1000 aircraft; they have also  signed multiple contracts to provide and service military transport engines for the US Air Force and US Marine Corps; in addition  construction has started on the state-of-the-art Core Manufacturing Facility in Derby that will produce reactor cores for the UK's current and future Submarines Programme.

Rolls-Royce, the global power systems company, announce the appointment of Lord Gold, who will report to the Ethics Committee of the Board. This appointment follows the previous announcement by Rolls-Royce that it has provided information to the Serious Fraud Office (SFO) relating to concerns about bribery and corruption involving intermediaries in overseas markets. Lord Gold was a solicitor at Herbert Smith for 37 years, serving as its senior partner between 2005 and 2010. He is one of the UK's most senior litigators and has extensive experience working at the highest levels with corporations, governments and regulators around the world.

Rolls-Royce announce that Mike Terrett, Chief Operating Officer, has decided to retire at the end of the year. Mike has worked for Rolls-Royce for 34 years and has been instrumental in shaping the current success of the business. Mike, an engineer, started as a graduate apprentice in Derby in 1978. He has succeeded in many roles since then, including as the Chief Engineer on the Trent 800 programme, President and CEO, International Aero Engines (IAE) and President Civil Aerospace. He was appointed Chief Operating Officer and a member of the Rolls-Royce Board in 2007.

The sale is expected to complete within the next few months, subject to closing conditions. It was the first EMEC located project to receive Renewable Obligation Certificates.

Rolls-Royce has been selected by Lockheed Martin to provide MT30 gas turbine engines and waterjets for up to two ships of the Littoral Combat Ship program (LCS), the next generation of US Navy warship. LCS is being designed and built to improve the US Navy's operational capability in the littorals, or coastal waters. Rolls-Royce's selection as the engine and waterjet provider for the Lockheed Martin ships leaves it well positioned for the program. The Lockheed Martin ship design incorporates two Rolls-Royce MT30 marine gas turbines driving four Rolls-Royce high-speed waterjets. The first vessel is due to be launched in December 2006 by Lockheed Martin. General Dynamics will also construct up to two ships for the same class.

Rolls-Royce announced the appointment of Dennis J. Jarvi as President, Defense North America. He will join the company on July 12 and will lead the company's defense business in North America, succeeding Steve Dwyer, who was appointed Chief Operating Officer of Rolls-Royce Corporation earlier this year. Mr. Jarvi will report directly to James M. Guyette, President & CEO, Rolls-Royce North America Inc. and, as a member of the company's global defense executive team, receive business direction from Colin Green, President - Defense Aerospace, Rolls-Royce. "We are delighted to have Dennis join the Rolls-Royce team," said Mr. Green. The new Rolls-Royce Marine Trent 30 gas turbine is designed to bring technologically driven Trent aero engine innovation to the cruise industry. Available for service in either mechanical or electrical genset applications for both commercial and naval markets, the Trent 30 will be available for delivery in 2004. Boasting a power rating of 36 MW and cost effective, the turbine is ideal for cruise liners, fast ferries and LNG vessels. The Trent 30 offers propulsion system designers optimum flexibility as it can replace the need for two turbines, thus saving on space and reducing operating and ownership costs. Measuring 8.9 x 3.5 x 4.3 m, it is lightweight and compact, its total package including enclosure and auxiliaries, weighing less than 26,000 kg.

A recent clutch of 'Rolls-Royce' shipboard equipment and technology contracts in Norway arising out of specialized, capital-intensive newbuild projects testified to the U.K. group's march into the commercial marine domain. For sure, the emergence of the engineering group's name in new mercantile circles is the outcome of last year's acquisition of Vickers, and its Vickers-Ulstein Marine division, rather than the result of U.K. home-grown product diversification. But the new proprietor of the former Ulstein and Vickers' interests intends to build on the platform and integrated system opportunities offered by ownership of the industry's most extensive global network of marine equipment production.

Rolls-Royce announced the acquisition of U.S. naval architecture and engineering firm Seaworthy Systems Inc. to improve further its marine support services. Seaworthy Systems Inc., based in Connecticut, with offices in New Jersey, Virginia and California, has provided expertise to the US Navy and Coastguard for more than 30 years. Its work will now be part of a TotalCareâ service Rolls-Royce is developing for naval customers – offering long-term guaranteed power availability and complete propulsion plant support for ships. Seaworthy Systems Inc, which employs 58 people, has also worked with the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration (MARAD), Military Sealift Command (MSC), and commercial shipowners.

The National Transportation Safety Board dispatched a team of investigators to the scene of the capsizing of the vessel Ethan Allen at Lake George, New York. Twenty passengers died in the accident. following is an update of factual information collected by the Safety Board's team. Cummins Inc., the manufacturer of the engine on the Ethan Allen, was offered and they have accepted party status. Cummins will provide expertise during the fact- finding portion of the investigation. They will provide technical input regarding the engine and will participate in the testing of engine components. No toxicology testing was performed by local law enforcement immediately following the accident.

British aircraft engine maker Rolls-Royce Plc said on Thursday its order book had risen to a record 15 billion pounds ($21.3 billion) as the group added to its share of the civil aviation and marine markets. There was no change to the short-term outlook for the group, however, with sale delays and restructuring charges expected to hold back earnings growth this year. "I am pleased to say that the order book has continued to grow since the year-end and today stands at a record $21.3 billion, reflecting significant growth in the civil aerospace and marine market shares," a top level Rolls Royce official said. At the end of last year Rolls Royce's order book was at $18.5 billion, excluding $1.9 billion in orders that had been announced but not booked.
