Middle East Ship Repair Yards Remain Center Stage

In the 45 years since the Arab Shipbuilding & Repair Yard (ASRY) opened on reclaimed land in Bahrain, the Middle East has become one of the world’s ship repair hotspots. A broad range of shipyards now service both regional and global markets.Regional yards have a ready market, with hundreds of offshore rigs working across the region together with the service ships that support them. Then there are thousands of tankers and gas carriers that arrive each year to load energy cargoes for far-flung destinations.

3D Printing for Offshore Wind Turbines Introduced

IT service provider Accucode is partnering up with RCAM Technologies, a specialist in large-scale concrete additive manufacturing, to develop large-scale, 3D printed concrete structures supporting offshore wind turbines.The partnership with Accucode comes on the heels of a grant announcement. RCAM Technologies recently received $250,000 from the Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade (COEDIT) through its Advanced Industries Accelerator Grant Program.The grant was awarded to RCAM Technologies for developing a 3D concrete printed wind turbine foundation that will reduce offshore deployment costs by up to $4M per foundation and $400M per wind plant.RCAM said it will use the funding to expand its 3D concrete printing capabilities at two partner locations: the U.S.

Durban’s 90-year-old Dry Dock Set for Repair

The 90-yer-old Prince Edward Graving Dry Dock in Durban, which is owned and operated by Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA), will be undergoing a R30 million ($2.4 million USD) repair project on its outer caisson over the next four months. This is the third and final phase of a repair program on the structure, which was deemed unsafe and in need of repair due to the dry dock’s age and general need for maintenance. Kvaerner & KBR Ally on Offshore Rig Topside Bids

Kvaerner ASA says it is to establish a joint venture with KBR Inc. to bid competitively on offshore platform topsides contracts for the Johan Sverdrup field development offshore Norway. The alliance combines Kvaerner's expertise and resources as a turn-key contractor for offshore platforms with KBR's competence as a leading international offshore oil and gas contractor. The Johan Sverdrup field is one of Norway's largest offshore oil and gas fields, and it is expected that the first development phase will include four offshore platforms for a new field center. "KBR sees Kvaerner as one of this industry's most experienced EPC contractor, particularly for demanding projects in Norway, including the Johan Sverdrup field," said Stuart Bradie, KBR President and Chief Executive Officer.

Panama Canal to Host International Maintenance Congress

Experts from the United States, Latin America and Europe will participate in the second Panama Canal International Maintenance Congress to be held on August 27 – 29, 2014, within the framework of the waterway’s centennial. The three-day event will have as main theme "Investing in Maintenance: Key to Competitiveness and Sustainability." Experts in the fields of maintenance and engineering will participate in the congress, sharing their knowledge and experiences in training for a culture of prevention. PPG Industries’ protective and marine coatings (PMC) business is celebrating the 20th anniversary of polysiloxane coatings, for which PPG was granted the first patent on Jan. 4, 1994. Tim Knavish, PPG vice president, protective and marine coatings, said polysiloxane coatings have revolutionized the protective and marine coatings industry, expanding into applications such as civil infrastructure, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), government, water and wastewater, petrochemical, offshore, rail, power generation and wind energy.

Strategic Marine Scores Two Infrastructure Projects

Strategic Marine announced today it is constructing two marine infrastructure fabrication projects in its Vietnam shipyard. Both projects are for Australian clients. The first comprises three 60-meter pontoons and three 90-meter gangways for application in Gladstone Port Corporation's new tug base. The second is for Carnegie Wave Energy and comprises three Buoyant Actuators for a renewable wave energy and desalination project off the coast of Perth. GPS Spoofing and the Potential Perils to Ships at Sea

Simple annoyance or potential security threat? Spoof is defined as “a hoax or swindle.”  In the world of electronic networks, a spoofing attack is a situation in which one program successfully masquerades as another by falsifying data and thereby gaining an improper advantage. We have all heard of, and possibly fallen victim to, fraudulent card readers (often inserted on self-service fuel pumps). The fraudulent card readers copy security information from the credit card, which is then used to clone an illegitimate credit card and incur improper charges on the victim’s credit card account.

Australian Coal Port Expansion Contract

BMT & Adani Mining Pty Ltd (Adani) to design expansion at the Adani Abbot Point Coal Terminal at Abbot Point, north of Mackay, Queensland. The collaboration will involve BMT engineers from Australia (BMT WBM) and India (BMT Consultants (India)) working closely together with Adani at its head office in Ahmedabad, India. The proposed ‘T0’ expansion of the coal terminal at Abbot Point will have a capacity of 70 million tons per annum of product coal and together with the existing ‘T1’ terminal, will deliver a total capacity of 120 million tons per annum.

KBR Gets Australian FLNG Design Contract

KBR contracted for Floating Liquefied Natural Gas (FLNG) vessel design by GDF SUEZ, which also pre-qualifies KBR to contend in delivery phase. GDF SUEZ Bonaparte Pty. Ltd. is the operator of the Bonaparte LNG project, offshore Darwin, Australia. This award is one of two contracts being let by GDF SUEZ as part of an initial concept definition design competition for the vessel. The award also pre-qualifies KBR as a contender for the EPC delivery phase of the project. The concept definition work is already underway in KBR’s London operations centre in Leatherhead, and is expected to last up to 12 months. KBR has developed an extensive global FLNG engineering capability in recent years, and draws on its experienced resource pool with capabilities in FPSO and onshore LNG EPC delivery.

Engineering Contracts for KBR on FPSO Projects

KBR  announced today that it was selected as Höegh’s preferred engineer to execute pre-FEED studies for two of its projects off the coast of Israel and offshore Australia. KBR will provide the pre-FEED study for the King liquefied natural gas-floating production storage and offloading (LNG-FPSO) facility currently being evaluated for Noble Energy's giant Tamar gas field off the coast of Israel. KBR has developed FPSOs that are in use worldwide and is recognized as one of the world's leading providers of onshore LNG plants and FPSOs. Höegh LNG awarded KBR a second FLNG pre-FEED study for an unnamed project offshore Australia. The four-month pre-FEED is intended to provide a Total Installed Cost (TIC) estimate for a two mtpa FLNG facility to enable further evaluation of the project.

A new maintenance company with no shipyard experience takes a struggling repair yard, converted from an old cannery, and transforms it into a success story. Alaska Ship & Drydock (ASD) is on its way to achieving its vision of becoming the maritime support center for the North Pacific and Arctic Oceans. The yard’s story is tied to the economic development in Southeast Alaska and its turning point came with the construction of the MV Susitna, the first ice strengthened twin hull ferry, commissioned by the Office of Naval Research.

USARC Calls for Arctic Oil Spill Research

The U.S. Arctic Research Commission believes that the U.S. needs a robust research program to address spill response in broken ice, as shipping moves into the Arctic Ocean and offshore oil drilling - in several Arctic nations - moves forward. Mead Treadwell, chair of the U.S. Arctic Research Commission, prepared testimony for the August 20 field hearing in Anchorage of the U.S. Senate's Homeland Security Subcommittee of the Senate Appropriations Committee. Treadwell told the committee that, contrary to laws passed by Congress after the Exxon Valdez oil spill disaster in 1989, a significant national oil spill research program does not exist, nor is one planned to fit the special needs of the Arctic.
