ClassNK Consulting Adds Cybersecurity Training Service

ClassNK Consulting Service Co., Ltd. (NKCS) added a new course named "Maritime Cyber Security Technical Course (Attack Method) for Responsible Officers in Land" for its e-learning cybersecurity training service.The service has been adopted by a number of ship management companies and manning companies. It has been well received because it is easy to learn anywhere with an online environment, and it covers the requirements for proficiency training in the ISM Code Chapter 6. The new course describes the actual incidents occurred in the maritime industry, attack methods, and countermeasures.

ClassNK CMAXS for Two MOL Ships

ClassNK Consulting Service Co., Ltd. developed next-generation diagnostic monitoring system “ClassNK CMAXS” has been chosen by Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) for installation on two more ships operated by the company. The system is now installed on a total of six MOL-operated ships. The two ships are installed with CMAXS e-GICSX, a system which monitors electrically controlled main engine supplied by Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., and CMAXS LC-A for auxiliary engines supplied by DAIHATSU DIESEL MFG. CO, LTD. Both CMAXS systems operate simultaneously, gathering information from VDR, data logger and main engine. This information (Big Data) is consolidated on a common platform for analysis and the potential future improvement.

ClassNK Launches EU MRV Support Service

ClassNK subsidiary ClassNK Consulting Service Co., Ltd. said it has launched a support service for setting up an emissions monitoring plan (MP) in compliance with the EU monitoring, reporting and verification of CO2 (MRV) regulation. This regulation lays down rules for developing MP and submitting the emissions report for ships above 5,000 gross tonnage, arriving at, departing from or sailing within ports under the jurisdiction of an EU member state, regardless of the ship’s flag. An MP should stipulate the recording of a ship’s operation data collection method and management procedure in line with the ships’s current condition and a ship owner or an operator is to prepare and submit the MP to a verifier for each of their ships by August 31, 2017.

K Line Expands Use of ClassNK CMAX LC-A

“K” Line Ship Management (Singapore) Pte Ltd has selected ClassNK Consulting Service’s machinery condition monitoring and automatic diagnostic system ClassNK CMAXS LC-A for use on one of its container vessels, marking the first commercial application of the software. “K” Line Ship Management (Singapore) Pte Ltd selected ClassNK CMAXS LC-A after a successful trial installation in 2014 delivered proven fuel and lubricating oil savings of 200 tons/year. The trial was carried out as part of a joint research project in collaboration with ClassNK and Diesel United Ltd. ClassNK CMAXS LC-A uses innovative diagnosis algorithms to analyze multiple sensor data in the engine room and detect any early signs of machinery damage.

NKCS Approves FROSIO Inspector Programs

ClassNK Consulting Service Co., Ltd. has announced the agreement concerning the Certifying Body of FROSIO, as an internationally recognized coating inspector’s qualification. FROSIO is a leading certifying body qualified to grant inspector qualifications to inspect surface treatments and the coating condition of ships, offshore and onshore steel structures. The Coating Inspector’s qualification of FROSIO is internationally acclaimed and recognized by the IMO. NKCS and FROSIO have agreed on a Letter of Intent for the recognition of the FROSIO qualification so that NKCS can expand its business throughout Japan and the greater Asian region in the future. Joint Project Studies Condition-based Engine Monitoring

Classification society ClassNK announced that it will participate in a joint project together with Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. and MES Technoservice Co., Ltd. ClassNK will support research into the development of condition-based engine monitoring systems for the Mitsui MAN B&W engine. The developed systems will assist in the early detection of abnormalities in electronically-controlled diesel engines in ships. ClassNK Establishes First Ever Subsidiary

ClassNK has established a new wholly-owned subsidiary, ClassNK Consulting Service Co., Ltd., located in Tokyo. This new company, ClassNK’s first ever subsidiary, heralds a new chapter in the storied history of the Society, the world's largest in terms of tonnage. This development was made possible by the Society’s change in legal status to a general incorporated foundation under Japanese law in April 2011, and promises much in terms of cultivating new areas of growth. This subsidiary in particular will allow ClassNK to broaden its activities in the field of maritime consulting.
